Conventional wisdom holds that the "DMC-12" was the twelfth incarnation
of the original concept that began as the Allstate-DeLorean DSV-1
(DeLorean Safety Vehicle). The designation DSV-12 was the final
fundamental design incarnation by Bill Collins that would later be
contracted out for production design to Ital Design of Turin, Italy,
owned by Giorgetto Giugiaro. DSV-12 was changed to DMC-12 when Allstate
pulled out of the project in 1974. At that time the target price of
DMC-12 was $7K (1974 dollars) and it was called the DMC-12 at that time.
The designation DMC-12 was finalized before Giugiaro got involved.
He started the production design in 1975.
For those of you that don't cater to conventional wisdom, consider this
possibility; stainless steel is 12 percent chromium.
