The answer to your question is very simple. DeLorean wanted to build the
best car but at a price the average man could afford. Thus, he wanted to
create a $12k car named the DMC 12.

They ran into many problems building the cars and deadlines that caused them
to have to spend more money, but the twelve in DMC 12 stood for the price
they were aiming to sell the car for.
