I have read numerous articles (including Consumer's Report) that synthetics
are nowhere near worth the cost. The key is changing the oil at least as
frequently as recommended. Oil does not wear out. It gets contaminated
with acids and dirt. Synthetics get contaminated just like the real stuff.
Using "regular" oil, you could change it 2 or 3 times more often than the
recommended interval and STILL save money over using synthetics. Please
don't take this wrong. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with synthetics
except the price. It has been argued that synthetics have better lubricating
qualities but how much better has never really been scientifically quantified.
Just claims. I ran a Mercedes over 300,000 miles using "regular" oil. If I
had been using synthetics I would have spent hundreds and hundreds (maybe
thousands?) of dollars more over the years just for oil. When I sold the car
it was still running fine on "cheap" oil.
