You can replace the trunk and engine cables by using bicycle brake cables.
They have worked for me. 

While you are at it check the engine accelerator cable. That can snap the 
same way, especially when you are DRIVING! Not a very good situation or 
experience for anyone.

If you do replace the accelerator cable, save it and use it to replace the 
trunk or engine's cable. Preferably, use it for the trunk cable for it is 
longer of the two cables.
