I'm a late comer to this thread, but:
You can certainly test whether the injectors are spraying during
cranking by simply pulling one and placing it in a bottle, plugging
the empty bung with a 3/8" (or 10mm) bolt in the injector seal to
prevent a major vacuum leak (interfering with normal air sensor plate
movement), then visually watching what it does as the engine turns
over. Disconnect the distributor lead wire to prevent accidental
starting during this test.
