Service Bulletin ST-16-10/81 has all the procedures for adjusting the transmission linkages. Sounds like the cable is just too loose. Usually binding would cause the trans to shift at higher speeds and downshift early or not allow the throttle to open all the way. As a personal preference I do not connect the micro switch. If you are heavy on the throttle at passing etc. like I am the micro switch allows the engine to stay in the high RPM no-power range too long to suit me. The D is quicker at the lower RPM range provided by proper actuated throttle response.
