Based on the fact that many properly operating and tuned DeLoreans
are wearing their original Cats well over the 100K mile design
target, I'd say the design was sound. That's probably longer than
most of those smog pumps last, at least on the cars I've seen and
owned.
Don't mistake lack of maintenance and age-related deterioration for a
design flaw. We're driving these cars 12+ years after they were
supposed to be dead. Sometimes we forget about that.
