John - Back on the ranch in Montana, when that happened we would
drive a long screwdriver through it and use the handle as a lever arm
to get it started. Kind of messy, but it tends to get the job done.
Remember to grease or oil the gasket on the replacement filter, and
only screw it on about 1/4 turn past when the gasket contacts the
surface of the mounting flange.
