I would buy all the parts necessary to make it an armrest pullstrap if I
were
you. It sounds like half the work is already done anyway. The armrest
straps make the car look much more "finished" in my opinion. I actually
have
1880 and I took off my door handle pull straps and put them in the glove
box.
I prefer just to reach for the handles.

Hi Samuel!
Pretty cool to find another VIN close by. I'm 5102.
Our cars were built during one of the two busiest months of production
on the DeLorean. October of 1981. It is very likely that your car had
the armrests replaced somewhere along the line. Whether it was at a QA
center, or by a previous owner later on is almost impossible to
determine. I can tell you that my car does not have an allotment for
the built in strap, and ours were most likely built on the same day, or
at least within a couple days of each other. My car was shipped from
the west coast to it's first owner in Texas, who I contacted a couple of
years ago. If you've got records that go back far enough, you may be
able to talk to previous owners, and find out who did what and when.
Interesting discovery though,
Josh

Why not just call them and ask???
BTW: When using DMCH struts, make sure your door will
close properly with the new strut before slamming it
closed and bending/breaking the strut mount.

Subject: sandblasting
After seeing a few of the coolant pipes on ebay that have been sandblasted
I was wondering how much is involved to actually do this yourself? Is
there a tool or sandblasting system you can buy retail to do this
yourself? As part of our ongoing restorations of these cars it would be
nice to clean and sandblast parts as we need to make repairs...

That's what the Millenium Concours Judging Handbook says at least!
[explanation snipped]

I'd say quite high actually... Mine is an October built 1981,
VIN# 05141 and also has the Pullstraps in the door.
But what's funny on mine is that BOTH of my doors have NEWER
build dates than the car; one is from November 3rd, the other 4th...
So I THINK Mine's been at a QAC too for some time, because as
far as I know, no new(er) doors or trimpanels have been fitted
since at least 15 years or so...

what do you mean by 'didn't work'?
does it fire at the proper temperature for the proper time?
please be more specific - this is an easy one if we know the problem.

Subject: Where to check for water leaks into the car?
Hey All.
I took my D on its first long trip over Thanksgiving (longest trip since I
have owned it). It rained for a full day on the car in the parking lot,
and when I went out to check on it after 10 hours of constant drizzle, I
reached and felt under the carpet where your feet go and it was SOAKED
underneath. This was on the passenger side and the driver's side. I
could see standing water next to the seats when I lifted the carpet up.
Frantic, I stole all the towels I could find and mopped the water out
every 3 hours. When I got home I used a garden hose and found that water
was leaking where the old inertia switch used to be mounted behind the gas
pedal and under the back window. A lot of water also came in by the back
bottom corner of the driver's door. I caulked like crazy and think I have
most of it patched up. My car is SO MUCH QUIETER since I caulked the
bottom of that rear window, the caulk must have been off for a long time.
Do any of you know of any other real problem spots to caulk in case I ever
have my car out in the rain again?

What exactly are your symptoms? Assuming you are trying to start the
car from a cold start and it starts normally when warm you should
check all the systems that are activated when the motor is cold. That
includes the vacuum advance system for the ignition and the cold start
valve. I would start with the cold start valve. Check and see if it
gets power when cold and the engine is cranking. It could just be that
you need a tune-up because you have worn spark plugs and bad ignition
wires.
