I don't have an Optima battery but I do have a Battery Tender ("Plus" model).
The reason they are small and cheap is that they don't produce much output current.
They're designed to be attached to the battery all the time and keep it topped off, as
opposed to a charger that tries to charge a batterey as quickly as possible.
A charger left attached to a battery will eventually ruin it. The Battery Tender senses
the battery charge and will only supply to current lost. When my battery was drained to
the point of not being able to turn the motor, the Battery Tender took several days to
get it back up to a full charge. Now I leave the Tender attached all the time when the
car is not being driven regularly, and the battery is always full.
I've been very pleased with this product.

I have had two Optima batteries. Neither of them had
ANY warning about special chargers being needed.
Further, neither place of purchase has ever heard of
this.
I have used both a regular charger and a "trickle"
charger on an Optima with no adverse effects.

Seeing this rare dealer option on Ebay this morning reminded me to mention
that a recent change to the Concours Judging Handbook now awards bonus
points to cars that have any of the following dealer option items:
Wide black stripe
Narrow Gray Stripe
Luggage Rack
Ski Rack Adapter
Sheepskin Seat Covers
Plush Floormats
Until a better method of determining what is an 'original' and what is a
'reproduction' comes to light, bras and car covers are not included.
This was one of the suggestions brought up by David Teitlebaum, as the
previously the presence of such items could only harm the competitor if the
items were in less than perfect condition. By offering these as 'bonus
points', competitors will be encouraged to keep and display these items.

There are already people registered for the concours to be held at our 2003
DMC Open House Event, and new Head Judge Marty Maier has already begun the

Here's how to find the headlight covers.
After following the link that Alex posted, insert
DeLorean (from list provided) in the "vehicle" box.
When the DeLorean page comes up you will see that
there are four mfgs. with "DeLorean specific"
products. One of the mfgs. is Lund and they offer
headlight covers for the DeLorean in clear and smoked.

I bought my car off Ebay and had it shipped from southern CA to Oregon.
I used DAS autoshipping that ebay recommended and was very pleased with
the service. The car arrived 2 days before the ETA they had given me
and I was able to check on its status during transit over the internet.
It cost about $900 since they shipped the car enclosed rather than on
an open carrier.

I would be concerned about the EQ above the battery.
The gasses off of the battery may damage your EQ.
Perhaps one of those Gel Cell Optima Batteries would be appropriate.

See message #30811. R30 differs slightly from stock DMC, but
apparently bolted up OK to what I assume is original transmission.
Martin G's PRV man pegged at 2.65 liters. Still scoots pretty well
(once you tune correctly!)
Are R30's available from domestic source? Given rest of my car, hard
to believe original owner shipped one transatlantic.
Have had good luck cross referencing 1985 Volvo 260 -- perhaps you
could find one of those.
Re: AMC Eagles -- only mentioned in much responded post because during
quest to ID my block was suggested by 2 DML'ers as possible source.
Renault did own controlling interest in AMC at this time, but two
product lines never cross engineered (don't go popping hoods of AMC
Eagles hoping to find a suitable doner).

The main bearing sizes in the Even fire 3.0 Eagle and the Odd
fire 2.8 Delorean PRV engines are exactly the same size and spacing. Either
crankshaft will fit either block. The problem you run into is not with the
crankshaft bearings, but with the connecting rod bearings. Both the large end
rod bearing and small end piston pin are different between the 2.8 and 3.0
engines and cannot be swapped. So if you have a 2.8 crank, the 3.0 rods and
pistons will not fit and vis-versa.

I doubt that very much. Odd or even firing is related to the crank, and
where each piston is in relation to the others - ie in an even fire, each
one will be 60 or maybe 120 degrees out from the next. This in turn affects
the valve timing and therefore the cams. To convert from Odd to even you'd
need to re-fit the crank and cams before the dizzy.

Farrar is correct on this one. John Lane from Pacific Rim does make
a kit to fit the Delorean distributor which converts it from an odd fire unit
to an even fire unit. I'm using this kit right now on an engine I'm doing for
a D owner up in Chicago.

MIke,
I have had trouble with insurance companies before. They responsed to
the sweaky wheel rule. I no longer waste time with an unresponsive
adjuster. After I have called them 3 or 4 times, I document the times
and lack of response and then call the corporate office.
I ask to speak to the president of the company about a claim problem.
That gets their attention and they refer you on to a customer service
agent who will look into your claim
I had to do this last fall when some kid literally drove into may sons
car. This kid was on the phone not paying attention to the road and
instead of turning left just drove into my kids car, never hitting the
brakes.
After the parents and adjuster started to give me a hard time, I told
them you kid was clearly at fault and the officer gave him a ticket to
that extent. I will now call your corporate office and get this handled
expediously. And I did.
Adjusters at insurance companies (and I do consulting work for a lot of
them) are paid and rated on how cheap they settle claims not on whether
they do the right thing.
If you want your what you are do, you generally have to fight for it.

my family has state farm insurance and although we have not ever had to make
a claim on the delorean, we have on other cars on the policy and they have
always handled things well. last time there was an accident, we just had
the car towed to our normal body shop (not the cheapest guy in town but one
of the best) and state farm approved it right away and we always request use
of new factory parts, not rebuilt or used parts.
if any one has a problem getting insurance in the San Fran. bay area I'll
hook you up w/ our insurance agent. I don't know about prices but if you
have a good driving record the rates are low.

I know I promised to give my rear ended update, I was putting it off waiting
for a conclusion.
But since this Insurance topic came up again I decided to post.
After 31 days, I now have my DeLorean back from DeLorean Motor Center in
Garden Grove. And of course they did an excellent job. The previous owner
had painted the fascias some peach silver color. So DMCGG painted both
fascias back to the original gray. Everything fits better than before the
accident. Deck lid cover even pops up when you pull the handle.
Also, Dan Botkin who has been with DMCGG for 2 years now is a pleasure to
deal with. The nicest guy you ever wanted to meet. He was very helpful.
There was a DeLorean down there that just had it's motor and frame powder
coated red. And it also had Don's Stainless Steel fuel injectors hoses
installed. Who ever owns that car, Beautiful Job!
Anyway, now for the bad news. Never heard a word from AAA. I could never
reach that damn lady, or get her to call me back.
Now Superior is ducking my calls too.
DMCGG had quoted Superior to paint the front fascia in order to match the
rear. They understood this and gave the
okay.
DMCGG called me and said, the painters can't spray over the original paint
in the front. There were too many coats of paint and chips, it would have to
be stripped. The cost of stripping would be $250.00 extra. I said, fine go
ahead.
So, I called the original adjuster, his phone is also his fax #. Every time
I call him it just beeped. So I sent him a fax but he never called me back.
Then I called the Superior agent and told him what's going on. He said,
$250. isn't a big deal they'll approve it and he would have someone call the
shop.
Of course when I picked up my car Dan told me that they wouldn't cover
stripping.
So, they won't return my calls, and they haven't sent a second check for
rent a car fees like the agent promised.
Maybe small claims and reporting them to Consumer Affairs is my only option.
I've now been rear ended twice!!
Matthew Stits, I don't know what to tell you or how this could help your
situation, but I hope it does.
Anyone had any luck with 21st Century?

Just to clear everything up, insurance can easily be had for the
DeLorean. Of course it's in the form of classic car insurance, and
has milage restrictions. So if you only see the road on occasional
weekends, then you've got no worries. But myself, I haven't spent the
past 3 years bringing my car back onto the road just to have an
insurance company tell me "No, you can't drive your car." because my
policy has a milage restriction. Pretty much the only drawback to
owning a daily driver...

Brain skipped a groove. 1985 cross reference is a Volvo 760. 1982 is
260. I use both depending on parts house (different computer systems).
FWIW: just priced fuel injector seals around town. Cheapest source is
DMC vendors (with shipping may be equal, but better place to spend money).

Subject: NO start update
Well, I've taken everyone's advice and ideas and tried
them all, and thie is where I'm at.
No issues with the battery
all electrics are working
all earths are good
Power and switched power to the starter/solenoid
Last night I removed the starter from the car, and
tried to fire it on the workbench, and found the
problem, The solenoid will fire, and engages on the
starter, however the starter does not turn, I think
it's dead.
Now I know alot of you have said that it is rare for a
starter to fail, however it's also rare for a torsion
bar to break. I've had one so maybe I can have the
other.
Starter is now in for repair/Recon should get it back
monday.

Back when DMCH was inteviewed on TV by a local CBS affiliate. Someone
had posted the link to view it online, and Wynn did say that they
plan on building and selling new cars. Unfortunetly, the link no
longer works. Maybe someone here might have a copy.

i am planning on getting an optima battery eventually, but no one had ever
mentioned anything about the battery damaging the EQ? probably because most
cars that they install on have the battery up front! i will do some legwork
and determine if it will be a problem down the road.
Price/location breakdown:
Alpine CD Deck - purchased locally about 2 years ago, i think it was about
$300.
Ample Audio 5.25"'s in custom pods - purchased from DeLorean Motor Center,
$200/pair.
Front Dash speakers - previous owner installed. <$80
Boston Acoustic RM6 6.5" - http://www.tmselectronics.com $185/pair.
Monitor-1 4.1 4x70watt RMS full range power amp - http://www.ampman.com $259
Monitor-1 MEQ-1 4 band paragraphic EQ - ampman.com $99
JL Audio 250/1 monoblock sub amp - http://www.woofersetc.com $210
Kicker S8L7 solo-baric DVC 4ohm sub - Site-on-Sound, Fargo, ND $220 special

Distribution Blocks by phoenix gold and fuse blocks - Northwest Audio, Fargo,

All power wiring, RCA's, speaker wire, etc was replaced by myself at a cost
of about $250 total. mostly monster cable (those RCA's are pricey) or
Stinger.
Total Labor on the install including carpet, wood, etc was $525 (Site On
Sound, 14 hours of labor)
Real-Time Analysis and system setup - $125
grand total:
Labor $650
Parts ~$1863
Misc (shipping, grommets, etc) ~$100
Grand Total (Approx) = $2600
i think i need to install an alarm system next.
