Probably one of the two water hoses that come out of the back of the
water pump. In a fit of wonderful humor by the design engineers, you
have to remove the intake manifold to get to them. While your at it
replace the waterpump anyway.

If the waterpump itself fails, the leak will appear to be coming from
inside or just behind the pulley. If you look up from the ground you
will see a hole in the casting where the water comes out when the
seal fails.

If the water seems to be running out of the block, it is the hoses.

Look at http://www.dmcnews.com/Techsection/waterpumpDMC.html for a
bunch of photos and other info if you want to get into it yourself.

are the belts tight?  Sounds like both belts are loose.  That might give you
the squealing sound and the intermittent problems.  If the pump gave out, I
don't think it would affect the alternator but I could be wrong.

That's what they told me.  I talked to them about a week ago, and they hoped
to have them done by the end of last week.  Ours is such a small run order,
they couldn't stop and go with each one that came in.
For those wondering what this is about, this year's limited edition run of
Colgan Custom nose bras mistakenly came through without the word De Lorean
embossed on the front.  Colgan has taken them back for embossing.  We should
see them any time now

I dont know what a failing water pump sounds like (could actually be
several different sounds), but I am personally 90% sure your problem
is with the pump.  The reason for the drop in volts and the squealing
was the pump probably seazing up, thus causing strain on the
alternator belt, dropping the volts.  When the pump freed up again,
the alternator was able to turn again.  I would definately replace the
water pump, or at least remove the intake manifold and inspect the
condition of the rubber hoses on the y-pipe and the heater line.  I
replaced my original water pump this spring.  Nothing was wrong with
the old one, I just didn't want to take the chance of somthing like
this happening while I'm out on my usual drives.  I'm sorry that this
had to happen.

I am scheduling a meeting with Dan Pfieffer this week.  I will ask
him how 9,000 got on it.  It states that the car was a demo car.  I'm
assuming this is to promote the twin turbo add-on (NOT Legend).  Dan
Pfieffer was a HUGE delorean dealership.  They still do body work and
are really good at it.  I've heard rumors that he still has around 5
untitled deloreans in storage with plastic on the seats, but I don't
have any solid info on that.  I will ask him when i talk to him.

when you consider that DMC Houston sells refurbished deloreans for
the same price, and D-1 "sells" them for $62,000....paying $30K for a
delorean that has never been titled AND is a turbo isn't that
bad...if you can afford it.

Yes, there is one washer nozzle.

The end of the tube is mounted in the middle of the passenger side wiper.  As
the wiper wipes, the sprat nozzle moves.  You get coverage of anywhere on the
windshield that way.

This sounds suspiciously like the History Channel's "Great Blunders in
History: The DeLorean Car" that they re-run from time to time.  It's been
out for a few years.  Do a search for 'delorean' on www.historychannel.com
and see when it'll be on again.  BTW, it runs half an hour.

I have the entirety of this show transcribed and available on my website

Subject: Torsion bar adjustment

Yes, I did it, but I don't think I did it enough. Here's how I did it should
others be so brave: First I tested the door with a strut I knew that was
good (it was on the passenger side). Once I had access to the bracket, I put
a 2x6, a 2x4 and a standard size brick (for friction) across the back just
below the window. Using a ratchet, 6" extension bar, and a 3/8" hex socket I
attached it to the end of the torsion bar and placed the ratchet on the
brick so when the bolts were removed, the bar wouldn't pop. With struts off
and my my assistant holding the door open, I unbolted the bracket. There was
a bit of a twist once it came off, but nothing popped. The rough serface of
the brick kpt everything from shifting. I pulled the bracket towards me onto
the socket and turned it one notch (I had my original position marked with a
Sharpie). I put the bracket back and with a little struggling, I was able to
get the bracket lined back up and get the bolts back in. Voila! No broken
window!

The door is certainly better than it was. Before I had to lift it myself.
Now, when I throw the handle, it risesalmost all the way but needs a little
help getting those last few inches. Would this be considered acceptable or
should I go one more notch? My only concern would be over-stressing the bar
and shortening its life span.

PS. I'm going to investiage the fan problem tonite. Thanks for all the tips!

The only one hour television program devoted to the DeLorean is "The DeLorean Car" episode on "True Hollywood Story" produced by Gary Simson for the E Channel. There is only a short mention and one concept drawing of the new DeLorean proposed when the program was in production.

Wife called me, said there was a Delorean show,
talking about the car and JZD for a whole hour!

She didnt call me until it was over! (ACK!).

Does anyone know what this is, and when it will be on
  again?

She said it had tons of info, and photos of the new
Delorean he wants to get in production.

  I've never seen it before,

Yes; there is just one washer nozzle (wiper arm jet).

The windshield washer nozzle connection is relatively simple. A rubber hose (105965) connects from the bulkhead fitting (108250) through the pipe retainer extrusion (108035) along the right hand wiper arm. The hose than connects to the wiper arm jet (100806).

For the first time since purchasing my Delorean, I hit the "washer"
button. Much to my suprise, I got a single spray of fluid straight up
in the air in the middle of the windshield.

Question: In the parts manaul, it looks as though there is only one

Jack,

My fist quest to you is, do you have an Overheat Protector installed in your cooling system. The squealing noise is coming from your alternator belt, re-tighten it. The sizzling and puffing sounds are coming from a coolant leak at one of the two rear water pump hoses.

It is  abit late to call Rob Grady, so I decided to throw this out to the
list.  I haven't run my D for a few weeks due to a fundraiser I was having
at my home and the need to prepare for 150 people.  Today I had a cruise in
about an hour from home and decided to bring out the ol girl and have a
drive.  Well it ran fine until I got to my parents house.  I let it run a
bit while I talked to my father, and it overheated a bit.  Only a very
little bit came out before I shut down the engine and let it cool off.
After a bit, I started it up and it ran fine, but was a bit on the hot side
all the way to a stereo shop I had to stop at on the way to the show.  There
I let it cool off again and filled up the resevour -- it took quite a lot.

It ran just fine all the way to the cruise in and on the way home it got hot
a few times, but cooled off ok until about 15 min from home when it started
  acting real funny.

1st off it would almost reach the 1st red hash mark on the temp gauge, then
the volts would drop to almost 8 or 9, then we heard a squeel from the
engine and the volts would come back up.  SOmetimes the temp went back down
  and sometimes it didn't.

Well not wanting to let the temps get real high, I decided to run a bit,
then shut down the engine and coast.  We did this for about the last 3 miles
home.  I was then able to take a look at the engine.

Inside the compartment, there had been a leak somewhere of coolent, and a
sound emmenating from what seems like the middle of the engine, of sizzling
  and puffing sounds.

I was thinking that maybe the water pump gave out, does seem logical??

One of the joys(?) of DeLorean ownership is trying to
determine accurate statistics about the car.  My 83

For one It's never too late to call mr. Grady (unless your car is on
fire).

No need to worry as of yet.
You probably have a leak in your coolant line, and the coolant leaks
on the hot engine or exhaust pipe that causes the sizzling and stuff.
The voltage thing and the squeel in the engine compartment could be
caused by the alternator belt slipping because it was either wet or
not tight or both. When the alternator doesn't cycle you are powered
by the battery which when everything is running might give around 9 volts.

The first thing to do is find the leak (with a pressure test) when the
engine is cold. A shop should be able to so this as a routine. When
the leak is fixed, fill the system, bleed the waterpump and go for it.
You might want to check the tightness of the different belts.

Chances are that the problem is then solved. And if not then check
back here :)

J & V, Yes that seems logical, since underneath the intake manifold is a
water pipe coming off the back of the pump and going underneath the intake
and going to the back of the engine. There are three rubber hoses and a
couple of rubber o rings to make the seal. You can see a picture of the pipe
on the web site at http://www.specialtauto.com/engine.shtml.

Hello,
I went to the 28th St. Dan Pfieffer dealership today and saw the D that
is sitting in the showroom.  The D in the picture is not the twin turbo but a
VERY nice DeLorean.  I was very surprised when I recognized the vin #.  This
car was previously owned by a gentlemen who collects Ferraris here in
Rockford Michigan.  I went to check it out last year when he had it for sale.
I guess Dan purchased it.  That car has around 15k miles and they are asking
$18,500 OBO.  it is an exceptionally nice car with no flaws.
Dan Pfiefer himself wasn't around so I did not get a chance to go out
back where he kept the twin turbo D.  The salesmen said that when Delores
went under they were selling Delores for so cheap that Mr. Pfizer purchased a
large quantity and continued to sell them for a while.  He said he had almost
300 all together.  Is that possible?

just wanted to let you know that there are 2 for sale

Comparing a car like this to one from either DMC Houston or D-1 is
kinda apples to oranges. Honestly, I have never seen a car by either
service center in person. But from what I have read on both companies
web sites, they either rebuild or refurbish a DeLorean specificly for
the customer commisioning the work. Now leaving their competative
prices out of this, I don't see where this twin turbo is a good buy.
It's a demo car w/9K+ miles. Demo cars are usually driven by people
who are looking to buy a particular car, and want to drive one of
that type first. That also means they can be abused because people
who drive them don't usually care. Now I'm not saying this car is
nessisarily this way, because I don't know a thing about it's
history, let alone it's current physical condition. I am however
basing that asumption on my past dealings with buying a demo car
(differant make). Yes this car is almost the same price as one from
DMC Houston, but it doesn't come with a warranty.

I also don't see how the vehicle never being titled should add to
it's value. In storage since new, up on blocks, never driven, plastic
on seats, all docutmentation verbaly and on paper? In THAT case,
sure, then I would say this would be a steal price. But, never
titled, 9K+ miles, possibly driven by many people? Doesn't sound
right. The big question here is why was this car never titled? Since
this car has seen pavement a few times, and is/was used as a demo, it
can't be to keep it in original condition. Perhaps after getting twin
turbos installed, the car couldn't pass emissions testing, so
slapping a dealer plate on it to avoid testing was the only way to
keep it "leagaly" on the road.

Just a thought...

Oh, gosh, I wish I had time to work on anything Delorean related....five
cars....two teenagers...maybe someday :-)

Could be talked into taking and uploading pics, though....
