I have to admit it's the first time I've seem a carbureted set up for
the DeLorean PRV-6 put in use. But there is a bolt on carburetor for
the PRV-6 engine. Would have been easier to install since it simply
bolts on and probably wouldn't have needed all the extra welding.
Plus you could have kept the ram-air intake and existing air box. Out
of curiosity does this type of a conversion hinder emissions testing?
On every vehicle I've had tested, the techs have always verified that
the vaccum hoses were connected exactly the same as they were
pictured on the routing diagram. If one was disconnected, they
wouldn't run the test untill it was hooked back up. Also, why
carburetion? I always thought the fuel injection was more efficient?
(not trying to criticize or anything, just honestly curious)

Thank you all for your advices!

The problems are finally resolved.

The A/C mechanic could not fill the R2 because the heater fan has been
accidently disconnected (by a foot...)when working in the fuses area. As
this had happen AT THE SAME MOMENT we where changing the seals of the
compressor (and losin all pressure), I thought the heater fan did not work
because of low pressure of the R12!

All has been restored and my Delorean is now COOLER than ever!

Subject: DMC Reliability question.

Hello,

I was thinking about buying a DMC-12.

I wanted to know how reliable are the DMC-12's?
If I found one with less than 50,000 miles that was
in good condition, about how much money would I
have to spend each year on maintenance and repairs?

Also, what is the general impression of the DMC-12's reliability:
Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, or Excellent?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

- Bill

Does carburating the engine add any horsepower or anything?  Why
would someone go to all that work to convert?  I understand Steve's
reason for doing it, but why would someone do it for the long run?

Welcome to the group Bill.

You will find loads of information in the archives at
http://www.dmcnews.com/backissues.html

As any 20 year old vehicle goes, there are a lot of variables when
trying to rate the reliability of a DMC-12.  The same goes for trying to
estimate the cost of repairs and maintenance.  I would suggest you spend
some time reading the archives, and monitoring the list to get a better
feel of what to look for when buying a DeLorean.  Of course the standard
guidelines of purchasing ANY older car apply.  You may want to find
someone local to you with a DeLorean to be a "mentor" and help you
select your new car.

In "general" there is no reason to conclude that the DMC-12 would not
provide reliable service if properly maintained.  There are a few common
problems, but the good news is there are solutions.

I presume that you want to use the DeLorean as a daily driver, not a show
car that lives in a garage?

Because this comes up so often, I conducted a poll here on the DML a few
months ago.  Of the 20 respondents, the median cost was between $1,200
and $1,600 per year to maintain each DeLorean as a daily driver.  This
includes parts and labor, but not insurance, fuel, etc..   Some years you
might not need that much, but other years you may need more.   You can
read details in the DML backissues.

I find the reliability of my DeLorean to be excellent and take it on long
trips all the time without worrying.  Reading the DeLorean Mailing List,
joining the DeLorean Owners Association, and joining a local DeLorean
club have all increased my confidence in my DeLorean.

Eric, as I mentioned on my site, this was simply a crude but effective way of
getting a good PRV6 motor with a bad Bosch K-Jetronic Fuel system to run.  It
was never driven on the street.  I just wanted to car to me mobile to move it
in and out of the garage, drive it up onto trailers, etc.  In truth, even
after tuning, this system would've yielded less power, higher emmisions and
worse fuel economy due to poor fuel distribution.  (It's also correct too in
that it wouldn't pass most visual emission inspections)  The original fuel
injection system (or electronic fuel injection) is really the way to go.

Also, I was aware that there were older versions of the PRV6 that had
carbureted intake manifolds, but there again, I would have been buying parts
for a motor I don't intend to use.  The way I did it, I only pruchased a
carburetor, fuel pressure regulator and a carburetor adaptor plate.  All of
which will eventually get used on other projects.  (I have no idea what I
could've ever used a carbureted PRV6 manifold for!  A planter maybe?  LOL)  I
guess part of me wanted to see if I could do it too.

Thanks for checkin out the site!

Subject: Yokohama Performance

Last night I took the D out durring a pretty good thunder storm. The
Yokohama AVS Intermediates performed VERY well in wet conditions! Not
once did they lose grip of the road, even @ moderate speeds on the
interstate. No hard braking, but when I did brake, it was like I was
still on a dry surface. When starting out from a stop, not once did
the tires spin. Also, the tires really channel the water away! When
going thru large puddles I had water splash out above the fenders.
All in all the tires have performed great! However, they should be
looked at as a safety precaution, NOT a licence to drive faster in
bad weather. No matter what car you drive, use common sense when
driving, and don't be afraid to slow down. If possible stay at home.
But if you do have to go out, drive senseable. Don't know how the
Goodyear Eagle GT's, or the Pirelli 600's perform. But the Yoko's are
great!

p.s. if you ever get a chance to drive you DeLorean out into a
lightning storm, take it! you'll get at least 3 times the looks as
normal, plus the stainless looks beautifull when the lightning
flashes across it!

I have been using a product caled Ospho to treat rust on my '83 D. This
product has had very pleasing results. It turns the rusted metal into Iron
Phosphide instead of Iron Oxide. It uses phosphoric acid so you have to be
careful when useing it and wash it off after its done replacing the oxygen
but after that I have used 3m's rubberizing spray which will flex with the
metal so no more rust can come in. To make it look as though it were never
touched, I used a grey primer hat matched the color of the epoxy almost
exactly, I can't  remember the name but I found it at a local parts store,
Napa or Track Auto maybe? Anyway, these products work extremely well and
strengthen the old rust.

Subject: Garage Door Opener Dilemma Solved!

As we all know, the only significant disadvantage to DeLorean
ownership is that there is no obvious place in the cockpit to put a
garage door opener.

I am pleased to announce that even this issue has been resolved.

Stanley makes a keychain-sized garage door opener (model 5905) that
rests perfectly on the lip of the console ashtray opening. The fit is
so good that you would almost think it was designed for the purpose.
It takes zero modification: just plop it in and slide the ashtray
door part against it. The color is even a near match to the gray
interior.

I've uploaded pictures to the vault:
