The milky substance is probably condensation from blow-by around the
rings. The crankcase is connected to the intake manifold through the
oil filler cap, and operates under the same vacuum as the intake
manifold, no PCV valve. The only way out of the crankcase is through
the oil filler cap into the intake manifold. Since the filler cap is
located in a relatively cool part of the engene, the water-oil mix will
condense there. If the milky substance smells like anti freeze, you
have a problem. If the car runs smoothly on all six from a cold start
and the spark plugs are all dry, you don't have a blown head gasket.

that unless the motor oil also looks like milk you just might have only
condensation in side the motor. this happens when the car is not driven

Being from Australia, I had never seen a real DeLorean before I travelled
to
the USA in September. While I was there, Don Steger of the DeLorean Motor
Centre in Garden Grove, CA. was kind enough to show my father and I around
his shop. He had about thirty DeLorean's in the garage and out the back,
and
I saw some fine examples of tip-top DeLoreans and neglected ones. I was
horrified when I saw one car that was rusted, dinged, dirty, and the
interior was full of dirt and rat's nests, but I was also awe-struck when
I
had the opportunity to sit in one of the most beatiful
specimen-of-a-DeLorean I had ever seen (in pictures or at the DMC).
So, Donald, I can empathise with the wonder you felt when you saw your
mum's
friend's DeLorean.
But, it looks like I might be able to see a few more DeLoreans a little
sooner than I expected (and I expected it to be a very looong time before
I
saw one in real life again). My dad and I are considering using our
frequent
flyer points to go back to L.A. for the DeLorean Expo '98! We're just
waiting for the next DeLorean World for more info on the event. I think
that'll be a trip to save up for! I'm 16, BTW.
Cop you's later,

Well, the little problem I was having where the auto tranny couldn't
decide
what gear to stay in isn't much of an issue anymore, as it doesn't go to
any gear. Progression of the problem:
At the beginning it would slip in and out of 1st gear.
Then it got worse and would switch back and forth between the gear it's
supposed to be in, and one gear lower (R to neutral, 1st to neutral, 2nd
to
1st, and 3rd to 2nd.)
Now it will basically is neutral all the time reguardless of where I put
the stick, and it will occasionally slip into first (or reverse,
depending), but never go fast enough to change any higher.
Any ideas? My nosey neighbor ( Mr. Certified Mechanic ) said that my
belts
need alignment, but I don't think he knows about D's in particular.
Please
help.. My car is stranded in my garage...
Thanks!

I know this may sound dumb, but have you checked the fluid level. Most
automatics I have had (four to date) have had broken dip sticks. The
owners either had too much fluid or not enough. It caused shifting
problems every time. Once I got the level right, no more problems.
Otherwise, call PJ Grady, he is the best in the business. (800) 350-7429

Rich, there is a plate inside the glovebox that gives the recommended tire
pressure. I don't have my car with me right now, but I think it is
something like 25 front and 35 rear.
I just searched the DML back issues (accessed under "Archives" at
www.dmcnews.com) for the words "tire pressure" and found a number
of previous threads on the subject. I suggest that you perform the same
search and read these past discussions for greater insight.
FYI one archive post says: ". . . the recomended pressure, 23-29 (F)

Cleveland, Ohio starting at noon Eastern time. Everyone on the DML is
invited.
We will be discussing the DeLorean Car Show in Cincinnati, the DOA

Subject: DML: DeLorean Wiring Diagrams
A couple weeks ago I sent out an emergency request for
a good readable copy of the De Lorean Wiring Diagram.
I needed it in a hurry as I had a tech who could do the work
on a certain day.
I got responses like you wouldn't believe! Several sent them
to me without question, Others I told them I would pay for
Priority Mail shipping etc. I got a total of EIGHT copies!!
Some I told not to send them as I had plenty by that time.
They were several sizes too.
Marcie Haug told me about a large copy that the DOA had
JUST made available, not yet on their Web page. She sent
it to me immediately. It is 22x34 inches and on a heavy stock
with a shiny finish and also includes a separate sheet that
shows where all components are located on the diagram. The
Cost is $10.00 plus $5.00 shipping. I highly recommend it
You can see all the details from quite a distance. I received
in time to use, however my technician preferred to use the
smaller one which he could take with him to where he was
working on the car.
Another diagram is the one put out by Brandon Moody. He
had them available a few years ago and were prox 3x5 feet!!
He said he had thought about doing it again if there was
enough response, and I see he is doing it. I have not seen
it, but probably will order one for the wall in the De Lorean area of
my garage. His info is in a previous newsletter and the cost is $30
including shipping.
So there you have the wiring diagram story in full. I want to
thank everyone who responded and SO quickly....James'
Newsletter is the greatest for we De Lorean owners and I for
one sure appreciate his efforts and the results I got this time.
I will tell a little bit later about what I DID with the diagrams.
Basically this was for a remote (radio controlled) starter, door
lock/unlock, alarm system etc. All is working great and I am
tickled pink with the operation and installation.

Subject: DML: Remote Starting of De Lorean.
I earlier, sent a letter telling of the response I got for the
wiring diagram. I got this so a technician that I could work
with would have better details on this particular car in
installing a commercially available remote starting system.
For those interested, It included connecting in four places
to the ignition switch area, connection to the stop light
switch, to the headlight and horns, a connection directly
to the battery terminal in the engine compartment, plus
instlalation of a switch under the engine "hood". Then due
to a little complication in the wiring of the De Lorean we
installed two new relays in the relay compartment area.
This was for the door lock/unlock operation. The module
has several other features, some of which are not usable
too readily in the De Lorean.
One button on the little key fob transmitter locks and unlocks
the door with each successive push of the button. The horn
gives a short single beep when locking and a double beep
when unlocking. The second button is the starter button.
When you press this, the horn bleeps once and the motor
starts, then the lights come on....the engine will run for a
programmable time, either 10 or 15 minutes and if you do
not come out to the car it will shut off. When the engine
is running and the RPMs get over 500 the horn bleeps twice
to let you know it is running. If for some reason the engine
does not start in 6 seconds, it shuts down for 20 seconds and
will try two more times. If at any time you want to shut
the engine down during this 15 minutes, you just press the
button again. The third button turns on the lights. They will
automatically go off in 15 seconds.
There are every kind of safety features, plus an alarm feature.
If someone tries to open your engine hood the alarm sounds.
This can either be an intermittent horn (yours) or a separate
siren. Ditto with opening your doors, or pressing on the brake
pedal or taking the car out of Park. The car cannot be driven
without a key in the ignition. A "secret" switch must be toggled
properly to shut off the alarm if triggered.
The system has the capability of adding more operations to it,
such as a trunk lock/unlock and opening/closing.
For your information this took 5 hours to install and the cost was
a totat of $500 for the labor and module, extra relays and wiring.
The cost of JUST the starting would be about $200 total.
Anyone with experience with car wiring could do the job. It is
mostly a matter of locating the components and running wires
to them. We ran several wires front to back thru the tunnel
after loosening some of the components first. Quite a bit of
the wiring was done in the relay/fuse compartment area.
It has good range. I triggered it from inside a restaurant where
I could not see the car and heard the horn bleep once and then
the double bleep indicating it was running. I did the same from
inside a super market. I could not hear the horn due to all the
noise around me, but the car was running and nice and warm
when I got out to it. I tried it from inside a shopping mall too.
The horn bleep can be shut off if you like. It has a bunch of "dip"
switches that can be programmed for all kinds of goodies. For
example if you park you car outside (no good inside a garage)
and leave for work every day at 730am, you can program it to
start up at 720am every day without doing anything further. You
can program it to start up when the battery voltage gets down to
11 volts to keep your battery charged up. And so on!
The module is well thought out and engineered.
Contrary to what this sounds like, I have no stock in the company!
I am just a gadget nut and am very enthused about this one.

Hello, everyone!
Living about 4 hours from Houston (I live in a small

repair/parts area is quite close, considering other automotive issues.
However, as I almost have enough money to buy a DMC, I will probably get

question is: Has anyone bought a DMC from DeLorean Motor Company in
Houston? Is it good for daily driving, and can last up for a couple of
years? Does it have all the "updates"?
Thanks!

First, and foremost we have made and shipped 70+ sets of keys so far. We
are trying to get all the key orders out by New Years. We have had a few
problems which may have delayed "your" key orders. If you have not
received
your order and you sent your order form by e-mail earlier than December
15th you might want to e-mail or call me at (510) 649-9118.
some things that might have stopped or slowed an order are:
Credit card decline/then accepted later
Invalid Credit card information
Incomplete address/ keys returned
waiting for Credit card number by Tel/ not called in yet
We filled and shipped all orders which came in the mail with personal
checks ASAP and before the checks were deposited. Not a single check has
bounced! WE are still receiving both e-mail and snail-mail orders so if
you
just sent an order it may still take a few days to get them made and
shipped.
I have received several e-mail questions about the card that the DMC-Keys
are shrink-warped onto. The card is a computer printed file of an 81 DMC
with the doors open parked several hundred feet in front of 4 Moai on
Rapa Nui
at Sunset. I just thought that the cards would be a fun thing to include.
Just to make sure we get every one who would like DMC Key blanks or
duplicate keys with the DMC logo added, if you have asked for but not
received an e-mail order form, we some how lost you. Please let us know so
we can send you the form. Even if you decide to use snail mail to order
keys, please print out the form and send it with your check. Please use
the
1726 Francisco street address. This is where the Keys are being made. If
you send your order to our headquarters address on Powell street, it will
take a few extra days before your order gets in to the "Q".
We had a die failure over the weekend and have stopped making keys until
a
new die is made. The die should be ready by Tuesday Dec 30 morning, oops
that 's today, so we should only loose one day (he typed with fingers
crossed).
OK that 's it for this year........Happy New Year to All!

While driving my DeLorean over the holiday weekend, my windshield was the
unfortunate victim of a rock that left a nice nick and an increasingly
long crack.
Since my insurance has glass coverage, yesterday morning I called my
State Farm insurance agent and explained what happened. They said they
were unsure if they could come up with an original windshield, so I gave
them the name of a company in Houston that I knew has several hundred
available - DeLorean Motor Company.
I received a call a few hours later from my agent saying that the
windshield was being shipped to Phoenix and the glass company would call
me in about a week when it came in. I asked where the windshield came
from and they told me from my source in Houston.
A bit later, Stephen Wynne called and told me that he was sending me a
rearview mirror mounting pad for the new windshield! That is what I call
great customer service!
I feel confident that should a more severe accident occur with my
DeLorean (or any of the four other vehicles insured through State Farm),
I will be just as pleased with the service.

Subject: DML: Shift change problem
A happy new year from Tokyo Japan.
I am new to the Delorean mailing list. I recently bought Delorean
from my Japanese friend Dr. Ohtsuka who currently lives in IL.
The problem is I can't change the gear to first & second. Third to
Fifth and reverse was no problem. Does anyone knows this problem ?
It's possible to change to first gear when I slightly pull the shift
nob and push it, but It's too hard to change to second gear anyway.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there Mark,
My suggestion - find another mechanic. There is nothing particularly
special about doing a top end job on your DMC. You could buy a whole
rebuilt motor and have it installed for that kind of money. Don't let the
place hose you pal. Phone around a bit.

Subject: DML: Black Again
I posted a message a short time ago telling about a product
called "Black Again" . It was a UV activated product for use
on plactic and vinyl to restore shine. Several have sent e-mail
inquiring where to find this stuff. I failed to mention that this
is only available at RHINO LININGS dealers. They are the
company that uses the Tuff Stuff Polyurethane to coat the
bed of pickup trucks. Just check around the yellow pages
for a dealer and they should have the product.

Although still on vacation, I managed to get a friend to go
to my shop and take a few photographs of the Wiring Diagram
and one of my current projects. The quality of the photographs
is nothing to get excited about but it should give you guys an idea
of what it looks like. I have had many request for orders already
but also several requesting the photo be put on the web for
viewing. SO, here it is. http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/7872/

Subject: DML: DeLorean vs. Corvette
Hello all DeLorean Owners,
Right now im the owner of a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 with over a
130,000 miles on it , it runs fine and I intend to keep the car, but Im
looking
for another car . I have managed to save around $21,000 and I'm in a rut
on
which car to buy. Either a 1990-95 Corvette or a real nice DeLorean. If
any
one has a feed back or would like to compare and contrast the
vette-to-the-DeLorean, it would be greatly appreacited. And how
accessable and
comfortable is DeLorean for some one who is 6'5''.
I've sat in a DeLorean a couple of times but i really couldn't tell much.
And
any vette owners too, i would apreciate any feedback on this subject.
THANK-U

Subject: DML: Oxygen sensor, mixture control, and oxygenated fuels
Up here in the Pacific NorthWest, we can only fill up with
"oxygenated" fuel during the winter months in order to help curb
pollution, and I was wondering what effect this fuel has on engine
performance (I notice that my car is a real dog lately).
If oxygenated fuel does what it advertises to, it changes the
composition of the exhaust gasses (maybe the gasses have a higher
oxygen content?). Since the DMC engine uses the composition of the
exhaust gasses to control the fuel mixture, I was wondering:
1. What effect does oxygenated fuels have on the voltage produced by
the Lambda sensor which monitors the oxygen content of the exhaust
gasses?
2. What effect does a resultant change in the Lambda sensor voltage
have on the mixture control computer (ECU) and therefore on the
air/fuel mixture the engine receives?
3. What effect does confusing the Lambda sensor and messing up the
mixture have on performance?
4. Will the exhaust gasses from oxygenated fuels make the computer
think the system is running lean and therefore cause it to enrich the
mixture too much, or will it make it think the system is running rich
and lean it out too much?
5. Is oxygenated fuel in a DMC completely stupid because the emissions
increase due to non-ideal air/fuel mixture caused by the fuel's
changed exhaust gas composition completely cancels out any potential
savings from the "oxygenated" fuel?

Subject: DML: Modifications
I'm amazed that so many people want to buy a Delorean and modify into
something that it is not. Although it will simply take another car out
of circulation and thus increase the value of our originals. I can't
criticize those who add turbos, especially if they live more than 1500
feet above sea level, 6 lb of boost in Colorado Springs simply brings
the engine back to sealevel horsepower.
It's hard to out-engineer a professional design engineer. Except for a
few Lucus parts, (which is not surprising), the car has been extremely
reliable for a 15 year old car. If you hang a cast iron, big block in
the back, your engine is going to lead the front end into the ditch on
every sharp curve.
Let's face it, the car was designed to sell for US$12,000 in 1981,
though other things drove the selling price to double that. How much
"High Tech" could you get for $12,000 in 1981? No one even had 4 valve
cylinders, as a production engine.
If someone really wants to improve the performance and keep the weight
distribution where it should be, how about installing a de-rated PT-6 of
about 300HP. If you start with the 750 HP model, you will be able to
crank it up a bit if necessary. (You might need a larger fuel tank.)
