That is a big difference since DMC Houston sells a completely refurbished/restored DeLorean for $29,500!
I think I read somewhere that one (or both) completely re-assemble the car and galvanize the frame (sink coating) it while they are at it. At least we know that DMC Houston has got all the parts for the DeLorean.
Maybe James Espey can shed some light on this - what do you get for $29,500?
My guess is that you get it all :-)

First off-
This topic comes up quite frequently, I suggest searching through the
archives, it would save me a lot of angst in trying to convince you that
D-1 does in fact sell these cars, quite a few as a matter of fact. Also
the cars are worth every penny, most end up being shipped over seas, (in
japan, these cars commonly go for upwards of $80k.) Since this topic
never farewell, and I know I for one am tired of seeing it pop up every
couple of months, use the search feature and put in d-1 or DeLorean one
or something along those lines. There was a very in depth discussion
about 3 months ago on this subject.
And to Claude,
Do you want a DeLorean, or do want a car that is worthless and just looks
like one? yeah you can buy the 5k POS, and put all the addons onto it,
but then it really isn't a DeLorean. What D-1 Sells is as close to a
brand new, Factory Original DeLorean as you can get. (Robert... Its just
the same, new car smell, you get handed the keys to a Zero mile rebuilt
car, [I know we have argued about that so I am going to leave it at
that]) Anyway, the car you want, is different from the car I want, and
from the next guy down the road. I want a perfect DeLorean, ready to just
be driven, no work needed, if you want a fixer upper, more power to you.
But there are many people who want a reliable clean, un damaged car to
begin with.
For Andy
D-1 Does a complete Restoration, I MEAN COMPLETE. I have seen several of
D-1's cars and they are immaculate. I even have a slight variation of one
of their cars. THEY ARE WONDERFUL, I cannot stress that enough. Also the
hear say about Ed is not a good way to judge him, he can be a really nice
polite person or, well yes he can be rude. The difference between DMC
Houston's cars and D-1 and unknown to me since I have only been to D-1
and not seen one of Houstons cars yet.
Okay, That's all I have for now because I always get involved in this
argument way too much, if you have a reply send it to comet4055@xxxxxxxx,
(this means attacking my stance and telling me D-1 is a bad company,)

Guess I overlooked the obvious, sorry. Don't buy one with dents, don't
buy one with a cracked windshield, don't buy one that needs to be
upholstered, don't buy one with trashed louvers or facias, don't buy one
that's not been driven for 15 years, you will be facing a money pit.
Buy one that has been well taken care of and driven with some regularity
but not with extremely high mileage. That's reasonable isn't it? I
freely admit that a pristine '81 is vastly superior to a trashed '82 or
'83, I assumed that was a given. As to the "book" borrowing it works
just as well as buying it, I said read it, not buy it, I borrowed the
copy I read. You need to know what's in it.

Willie, this is a common problem that the list recently helped me with. The problem is that the bulb sockets are not making a solid connection to the board. There are two fixes...buy redesigned taillight boards from a DeLorean vendor that won't have this problem, which cost around $80 or $90 each, I believe (but don't quote me on that price).
OR, you can do what I did, play it cheap: get some small nuts and screws from Radio Shack and put them into the holes next to each bulb socket and tighten them down to the board. This works *pretty* well, but it's not perfect. (Mine still don't connect from time to time; I suppose I have to go back in and tighten the screws a little more.) The other problem I've noticed with this fix is that you may end up not being able to fit the lamp board with the screws back into the tail light assembly very easily; the screws may get in the way. You'll see what I mean when/if you do this. In that case, just fit the board on as best you can and...well, just use tape to make the rest stay put. I know, ultra cheap sounding, but at least you save money and not many people will know the difference.

I just received the latest J.C. Whitney Catalog. In the new and hot products
section (page one) they have a tail/brake light LED replacement lamp. It is
configured in a circular patern and is designed to display a "rotating
patern" while in taillight mode and 2 pulse per second "flash" in brake
light mode. They are supposed to be 4 times brighter and directly replace
the 1157 bulb. They sell for 24.95 each. They also advertise a marker lamp
and interior lamp as well. Available in the usual colors including white and
many other "neon" colors. See the back inside cover. These look like they
run between around 9.00 depending on your needs. They also have a "fuse
type" LED replacement for the dome lights. These might be worth a look.

Mike is essentially right, but a VIN can tell you a bit more. For example,
the earliest VINs were from cars assembled just after the production process
got started. If you recall, many of the first 500 or so cars
(pre-production) were assembled in order to get out the "bugs" in the
production process. As time went on, through late 81 and early 82, the
workers became more proficient and the assembly line sped up. Correct me
if I'm wrong, but late 82's- through December- morale was lower and, as Mike
said, many of these cars sat on docks in New Jersey and elsewhere waiting to
be sold. On the other hand, improvements in some of the cars initial
deficiencies were taken care of, particularly from a major components and
safety standpoint- changing out the underpowered alternators, for example.
So you can make some judgments of the quality of car from where it started.
But again, to Mike's point, the care of the car in the intervening 20 or so
years is probably more important, particularly for a car that has seen some
use.

tells you NOTHING about its value or its viability!
Consider that daily drivers are not necessarily the most valuable. Concours
quality,
gold plated, and other very special DeLoreans would be unlikely candidates
to become
daily drivers.

I have only been on the list a few months and consider myself a novice when
it comes to most things concerning the DeLorean. However, I have spoken or
emailed to many list members, sellers and other experts. I too am a little
surprised why DeLorean prices are not higher. Between 1985 and 1988 I wanted
my first Delorean but being just out of college and no clue how to even find
the car or how to care for it I went for the next best thing i could find, a
silver acura integra....cost $12,500.
I do remember calling an older gentlemen (I believe in ohio with kapac) who
wisely talked me out of buying one. At the time there was no internet and few
experts to turn to.
Here we are 13 years later and I have finally bought my first Delorean. The
price....$12,500. Same as my new 1988 Integra. Several owners have joked with
me that when they pull into their local gas station people mosey up to them
and think they are looking at a $100,000 car. The owner usually tells me they
respond, "don't tell anyone but I'll make you a deal for $40,000"
It makes no sense why this cars value is not higher: It can never me produced
again, impossible to duplicate, limited quantity and still looks ahead of its
time. The only reason I can imagine is that there are always so many for
sale. I think at this time there are over 100 currently on the market through
the various websites. Some of these cars stay on the market for months with
the seller lowering their price in frustration
Perhaps like a painting only the death of the artist will bring the car the
notorioty it deserves and increase it to the value we all expected. However,
most of you drive it for the love of the car which is the reason it was
built. It seems alot of the original owner cars are slowly turning up in old
warehouses and garages. When these cars disappear from the market and the
demand moves past the current supply we will finally see our car prices rise.
The only solution is the same as all those internet stocks we all are
holding...don't sell.
