Last week I had my D's AC system evacuated and recharged with r-12.
Amazingly it blows cold!. On Wednesday I took the car on a small road trip
up to the UP of Michigan. It was about 95 degrees (VERY Humid) so the AC

on for the majority of the trip up; so about 4 hours. It stayed very cool
and I had no problems at all. When I got out and opened the passenger door
I
couldn't believe it. There was almost 2 inches of water on the passenger
floor. I took it to the car wash and vacuumed it out. When I came home I
removed the seat and dried the carpet.
How can I fix this problem?

My new Michelin tires arrived yesterday from tirerack.com. I haven't
mounted them on the rims yet because I am working on possibly exchanging my
rims for refurbished powder coated rims from a DeLorean vendor.
Despite being shipped basically naked, the tires fared fine on their journey
here tied together in pairs with packing slips taped to the sides. I really
can't complain.
I got the all black side-wall design. As I remember, I also had the choice
of raised white lettering (RWL). The fronts & rears look identical with the
exception of the size specification on the sidewalls (duh!). The
proportions, graphics & tread all match perfectly front-to-rear. Unlike the
Yokohomas, the Michelins are not side specific.
The invoice looked something like this:
P235/60HR15 Pilot XGT H4 $106.00 each
P195/60HR14 Pilot XGT H4 $87.00 each
Shipping to Florida was $38.18 UPS Ground with an invoice total of $424.18
As a side note, they smell awful! I don't recommend storing them in the air
conditioned part of where you live. I'm anxious to see how they handle. By
that time I might have already replaced the front shocks in installed the
lowered springs, so I might loose my objectivity. When I'm done, I expect
the results to be terrific.

There isn't much depth behind the rear wall. Some people move it forward to
get additional space.
A few years ago, I had a local stereo shop install an 8" woofer in the lock
box behind the driver's seat. They made a new lid for the box, cut out a
speaker hole and covered the lid with gray speaker cloth. They used a tiny
mixer to pull the bass equally off of both rear speakers, and added a small
amp (both also in the box).
They also added a capacitor circuit to filter out the bass frequencies from
the rear speakers, but I think this could use some more tweaking.

The benefits are:
- Less load on my stock radio
- All the bass I could ever use
- No loss of room on the rear shelf
- No loss of bass if you put luggage on the rear shelf
- Less rumble from the rear speakers (from too much bass)
Bass is pretty non-directional, so the asymmetrical arrangement isn't a big
problem. As with any well-designed speaker enclosure, the lock box has a
rear opening via a baffle system. <GRIN>

This Door was removed back in 1982,(2,200 miles)so that everything
you see on
the door is as set by the factory
Take a CLOSE look at the Extra Framing that was put around the door
pillers,and
the extra plate welded on the roof,of the door,and the massive door
beam made from SS,also note how the threaded bracket(s) are inserted
for the four bolts that hold the hindges to the door,the door was
setup,so that the WINDOW is NOT needed for structural support.
There was plenty of Research and Development done on the Doors,in
fact,parts of the door
frame are as thick or thicker than the Car frame.

Sorry to beat this question into the ground, but I couldn't find a definative answer in the archives. My automatic transmission recently ate itself (at only 13,700 miles! grrr...) and I'm looking for a better solution. I was just wondering if ANY other transmission will bolt on to the delorean frame. So far, I figure my options are: 1) Get my existing tranny rebuilt, or 2) Get a new one from Houston or PJ Grady. Does anyone know of another option in the form of an aftermarket automatic transmission?
Also, on another note, I came across a webpage once where a guy was selling an adapter that would allow a 5-speed transmission to be bolted onto an automatic frame. I have since (of course) lost the URL. Does anyone have any details about this?

Well, leave it up to a woman to figure out something; yeah, I know
there are some of you guys out there who are certain women can not
think at all, but then there are some of you who just accept that we
can and DO. Aside from that, my other half, whom I dearly love, now
has 2300 miles on his virtually "new" D. He has always had a little
difficulty getting it to start, however. Knowing that it is fuel
injected, he would NOT TOUCH THE THROTTLE, but would just turn the
key. That's the way you start fuel injected cars--don't load them
up. The starter would turn over a number of times and then the car
would finally "light". Well, last weekend after a fairly long drive
(1 1/2 hours) and then the car sat for six hours in the extreme heat,
we went to leave. He did his usual procedure when starting - turn
the key, turning over the starter, but this time it would
not "light". YUNN, YUNN, YUNN, YUNN, YUNN!! You know that sound! He
ran the battery down. Fortunately, someone was there with jumper
cables who offered to help my husband get it started. While the guys
were outside chatting, I opened the glove box, got out the Owner's
Manual and read "Engine Operation". Gee, there it was, "depress the
throttle 1/4 of the way and turn the key" how simple!! Now, I wasn't
to interrupt their conversation, so I sat quietly. Finally,there was
discussion about the fuel pump and some other things and then my
husband asked me to get into the driver's seat. While they were at
the backend, I was to start the car. I told him about the 1/4
throttle, so I gave it 1/4 throttle AND IT STARTED UP! Wow, what a
relief! After we got home and pulled into the garage, he shut it
down. He paused a moment then looked at me and turned the key and
STARTED IT RIGHT UP! He shut it down. He turned the key again and
STARTED IT RIGHT UP! He shut it down again! He turned the key and
STARTED IT RIGHT UP! "Mmmmm" is all he managed to say. I just smiled
and said "Thank you." NOW YOU DON'T SUPPOSE IT WAS BECAUSE HE WAS
GIVING IT 1/4 THROTTLE EACH TIME, do you?????

This has been mentioned before: a subwoofer needs a certain amount (and shape)
of space behind it, depending on it's specs... The rear wall would not supply
you with enough air behind it. I have my rear speakers in the back wall and they
sound OK, but they're not subs, so need less air behind them...

From experience I can say there's about 1,5 to 2 inches behind the board, the
board itself is about 0,5 inch thick. The space betwee the board and the fire
wall is filled with foam for sound and heat insulation from the engine.

I wouldn't put the amp behind the rear wall: it's too hot behind there and
there's no circualtiuon of air possible, so it would thermal-trip way too fast
and too often...
The "under spare" option is also much easier to access when you need to tune the
amp or (for instance) replace a fuse...

Subject: seat back falling apart
hey guys,
what's the best way to repair a seat back? mine is undone at the top. i can
get the metal bracket to go back up in the seat and it looks good then, but
as soon as i sit in the seat, it pops back out again. there is old glue
around the edges of the back, so i know that a previous owner tried to fix
the problem once already. the back is bent inwards, i think too. i was
thinking maybe i could get some screws and screw it in, but it's all soft in
there with nothing to screw into.
any ideas?

Blaupunkt has a new line of amps that are both slim, and generate
less heat for the power output. Some as the website states are as
small as a paperback book. They both look, and disperse heat like an
iMac, and have no cooling fans. This can really open up a world of
possibilities for a new mounting locations.
If you're looking for base, the rear shelf is NOT where you want to
concentrate on. I have a set of 6x9" speaker boxes on the rear shelf.
They pump out a nice amount of base, and really fill the car now with
sound. A single woofer in the center wouldn't hurt, but anything more
would be overkill. But, mounted down below on the kick panels I have
a set of 5" speakers. Intended to fill out the sound in the front of
the car, these are what ended up REALLY producing base. When they
thump, the vibrations resonate thru the floor boards and the entire
underbody of the car. If you are looking for a nice, full sound thru
out the cockpit, speakers on the kick panels are the way to go. If
you're simply looking for thumping base that you can feel, I would
reccomend that you look into some sort of set up under the dash to
pound the floor boards with sound. Someone before mentioned Fiero's
use a set up for Bazooka tubes under the dashboard.
Most cars that are hatch backs, or traditional trunks have woofers in
the back to bounce base off the rear of the rear of the car. Since
the DeLorean is not a typical car, typical speaker configurations
will not always work.
Before you spend any money at all on speakers, cables, amps, or
boxes, head over to Radio Shack, or your local library and pick up a
book on loudspeaker or sound system design. If they have one (which
either source should), find a book specificly on car audio.

Well, nobody said that they were not available any more, only that it
appears that they *soon* will be unavailable.
As I said in the original message:
(a) Tirerack.com no longer lists the fronts and they (and several
other Internet sources that I checked with) said they were listed as
"discontinued" and they would no longer order them.
(b) Yokohama customer service confirmed that they were discontinued,
and gave me a number of local dealers who might still be able to get
them.
(c) Of these dealers, only Sears said they could get them (and did).
All of the other local chains had them listed as "discontinued" and
would not even try.
None of this in inconsistent with what your Yokohama contact said. I
assume they are selling against current stock, which explains how my
local Sears was able to get them. But if what Tirerack and Yoko told
me is true, when they are gone they are gone.
The purpose of my original post was to alert people that if they want
new Yokos, they might want to think about ordering them soon.

P.S. -- Now that I have my new Yokos mounted, I can confirm what
everybody has been saying: my D handles like a different car. They're
great (although I am sure there are other tires that would be great,
too).

I had the exact same problem with my driver seat after I had them
both redone. Make sure that the brackects on the sides of the seat
back are fully clasped into place as well as the top. It took a few
tries, but no problems since.

Have you concidered having the rims chromed? I have done three sets now and
they look glorious. I have them stripped, polished, chromed, painted black
and than polish the tops of the radial fins and the center hub and outer
rim. I have had excellent results from a company "CICC" in Santa Fe
Springs, Calif. but there should be a good shop in your area.

I had to have a new Automatic trans. axle installed at 13, 800 miles in
my former 1981 #3713. The car was shipped to Grady. They did a great job with
the transmission. The car shifted much smoother than my other 1981 automatic
DeLorean #6058.
My advice is to stick with the stock unit, either rebuilt or new unit
installed. The rebuilt units have a different set up than that from the
Renault factory.
The automatic Fuego (Trans. ID MJ-B) utilizes the same computer harness.
Very few of the internal parts like the valve body are GM Europe. (Ferrari
automatic parts are also GM Europe!)
If you have any contacts in France have them look up a Renault 30 saloon.
The automatic is identical.
Cross your fingers with regard to the price. It is going to be expensive
either way you do it. (Swap w/ something completely different and/or install
a new unit or have your existing unit rebuilt)
Just to give you a comparison, Morley Safer, the journalist from the 60
Minutes TV show, blew the trans. axle in his beloved Ferrari. The Trans axle
cost as much as a Concourse DeLorean!
