The Firestar 500 was a concept car to help the rebirth of DMC. Back
in 1985 after the drug trial was over, efforts were under way to
restart DMC. The idea was to purchase the remaining parts from KAPAC
in Ohio. From the parts, 2 cars could be built, the DMC-12, and the
Firestar 500. The FS 500 was basicly going to be the DMC-12 with
different facias, new rims, and a more powerfull engine. As well as a
sizeable rear wing on the back. The idea for the company was the DMC
would now have most of their assets back in the form of parts. But,
they would now be paid for in full since they would have been
purchased from KAPAC. And from here of course they could build new
cars and take profits from these car sales to reinvest in the
company. JZD was so close at the time that he even had backers and
investors with cash in hand. But alas the government stepped in and
stopped him when JZD was once again placed on trial. But this time
for fraud. It should be noted however that JZD was also aquited from
this trial as well.

As far as a new car being put out in '99. JZD did talk in '97 about
the possibility of a new car comming off the assembly line in '99.
How did the rumor start that it was the Firestar 500? JZD talked
about his plans for a new sports car, and it think that it was
assumed/hoped from there that the car was to be the FS 500.

p.s. On an interesting side note to this story, there was a movie
back in the 80's called "Collision Course". The movie stared Jay Leno
and others (Pat Morita too, I think...). An interesting side plot in
the movie is a Detriot Excutive who puts out a line of cars that bear
his own name. One of which is called the Starfire! It also has some
other references to others such as Roy Nesseth, and seedy dealings.
However this time rather then drug dealers, it corrupt politicians.

Going out on a limb here, I'd say that your pump is probably ok.
Check the pick up hose, and make sure that it is intact and in good
condition.

Try swapping the Control Pressure Regulator plug with the Cold Start
Valve, and see if that starts the engine up. If no go, remove the
cold start valve to inspect it to make sure it isn't clogged. Since
the engine is coughing, it's getting fuel. But probably not enough to
start it since it's cold.

Since Wayne A. Ernst did such a good job on how to seal the fuel
pump, there isn't a reason to repeat anything he said. You can
install a water defector to keep rain and wash water away from the
boot. But if you have sealed everything correctly, the deflector
isn't nessisary.

p.s. a quick way to check if the pump is working: Have a 2nd person
jump the relay to turn the pump on manually. Then check to see if any
fuel comes out of the return hose in the tank. Just remember to keep
some bare skin against a body panel to keep yourself grounded and you
should be fine. But as a precaution, I would only do it long enough
to check for flow. And I would only do it if you feel comfortable
with the procedure.

Subject: Door Solenoids

Can anyone here tell me if it is a difficult job to rewind the dooor
solenoids? According to the Technical Library, each solenoid takes
70' of #20 enameled motor wire. Since chances are that I'll need to
replace the passenger side solenoid, I was looking at this fix as a
possible alternative.

Good eye seeing those sliding windows, but I dont know whats up with
them either.

I acually have another question spawned upon reading part of the
article legible in one of the pictures.  It said "the doors are
counterbalanced using cryogenically pre-set stainless steel torsion
bars".  Whats up with this stainless still bit?  There was a short
discussion I brought up a few months ago about this, and I thought it
was settled that the torsion bars were regular steel.  I looked at
mine, and sure enough, it looks like there is a tad bit of surface
rust on small parts of them.  This almost has me concerned though, if
the torsion bars will rust, wont that pose a safety hazard considering
the power stored in them?  So perhaps we could get an "offical" word
on the construction of the torsion bars.  Are they regular, or
stainless?

The Firestar 500 was a DMC-2 concept that John was playing with around
1985-1986. I saw it in a few short magazine article blurbs around
the time the whole cocaine trial was winding down. Although I haven't
seen any design photos yet of the new sport car or cars that John is wanting
to
get into production, we can only speculate as to whether they will look
anything like

But unfourtunely,here in the USA,the 1985 Mini car you describe to
get the part from is as common as You finding a 1985 Chevy
Chevette,in your salvage yards,they are just not found here,The
Triumph Tr7 or Tr8,should have the same stalk/comb switch,they are a
more common car on both sides of the Ocean.

Hello Guys,

after four days of investigations, i've gotten my car to the point where i
can start it and it will idle for about 10 seconds, then die. 

here are the things i have checked:
1. fuel pump is good. needs baffle though
2.  RPM relay functions
3.  all vacuum hoses appear to be connected
4.  if you hold down the air valve on the intake manifold, the car will run
indefinitely as long as you have the piece pushed down a few millimeters. 
this indicates incorrect mixture levels since my vacuum hoses appear to be
correct.
5.  i have all the brass fittings on the water pump near the banjo and dome
nut so that pressure is right there.

HOWEVER:
i have discovered that now that the car will run for a bit, i have gasoline
spilling out all over my underbody.  i have observed two pipes which run
parallel near each other, then split off and go to different sides of the
engine near the transmission.  where the pipes are close together is where
the gas seems to be leaking out.  quite a bit of it comes out, too.  it drips
quickly from both pipes an equal amount. i do not know if the pipes
themselves are leaking (i don't even know if they are fuel pipes) or if the
leak is coming from above the big pipes.

i had the car towed over to a local service center to find out if they can
get the car on a hoist and see what's happening down there.

anyone here have any ideas on what's happening? if you need more details, i
will try to give them!

    Thank you for your reply. It is great to hear that you sourced a Mini
Cooper with the same stalks as on the DeLorean. I'm happy to hear that you
and your car are becoming familiar with each other.

By the way have you looked at an Austin Allegro?
I was informed that the stalks and some of the electric's are the same too.

    However, the Mini is not imported to the USA at the moment. That is why I
recommended a DeLorean correct part for the gentleman. I understand your
intention was to assist another owners concern and ease his thoughts about
spending money on a repair.

    The last time I checked at our Bowie British Car Day there were very
limited numbers of Mini's here in the USA. The number of Mini's in our
American scrap yards is probably non existent too.
     It is bad news to hear that Mini's are plentiful in scrap yards in the
UK.  I wanted to purchase one when they go on sale here in the USA next year.

    I'm starting to believe after many years of reading, researching and
driving DeLoreans that many "correct for the car," AKA DeLorean parts, are
available at DeLorean parts suppliers, such as those in the DeLorean World
Magazine.
   
    Imagine that, DeLorean parts are available!

    Who would have thought that buying & driving a 20 year old car would
require maintenance and replacement parts?

    I hate to hear that a new DeLorean owner or veteran owner has to perform
an expensive part replacement or contract a DeLorean specialist to overhaul
their Gullwing Stainless Steel Super Car.

    I'm starting to believe that many of the DeLoreans' that have to undergo
such intensive care and restoration are those that had questionable repair
methods and incorrect parts...parts probably from a scrap yard?

get their invaluable advice included with the parts! As for the
leather Lexol cleaner and protecter is the premium stuff to use on
leather. It is expensive but a little goes a long way. For cleaning

Dear List,

Does anyone have a copy (preferably electronic) of a contract for a
show/event they’ve done stating that the group putting on the event is
liable for damage/theft/etc….?  I need a copy for something coming up in

about it Joe?  Or anybody else?  Perhaps this is something that belongs in

The Gold DeLorean on the cover of the catalog is a poorly done illustration
using the last prototype DeLorean.  They merely colored the car Gold.
Notice not only the sliding windows, but the side markers are touching the
fascias.  There is no rear louver either.

My information on the actual Gold DeLoreans produced is that after the two
were built in late 1981, there were enough extra panels only to make one
more car, and that was the last DeLorean made.

Don't run it without fuel to draw.  The fuel is the lubricant, and you could
damage your pump testing it.

Andy, I would definitly get the water/gas cleaned out of the boot and
replair the cover so that doesn't happen again. I check mine
periodically for that. Before you try to take the fuel pump out you
might want to try one thing first. Lay a small piece of cardboard on
top on the engine and take out the cold start valve and lay it on the
cardboard. Then try to start the car, just a quick turn over or two.
If gas is pumping and under pressure the cold start valve system is
working ok then it will squirt a little gas onto it. If no gas, then
I would proceed to make sure the pump is turning on when someone else
turnes the key so you can listen or feel it. Normally it will turn on
for a second or two then stop because it built up the pressure. Try
that first. If the pump comes on and doesn't quit running, then it
may have a broke diaphram. Runs but very little pressure.  The pump
has and electric motor in it with a diaphram to create the pressure.
This will help to determine if it's gas problem or you can check the
spark to the plugs. If you need help on removal it's pretty easy, and
you can call my office 800-413-3300.

I'm looking into the re-manufacture of the long-lost fusebox cover.
Depending on how many people that sign up for it (the more, the better /
read:cheaper) expect the price to be around 200 dollars per cover. Yes, I
know its expensive but at least I've found a company who says they can do
it.

The fuel system is under HIGH pressure and there can be NO leaks. It
could drip down onto the exhaust and BURN. Find the leaks and fix.
After you can contol the leaks it might be that the mixture is way
off. In Richmond this past summer a member had a car with the same
symptoms and Rob Grady adjusted the mixture screw and got it running.
To adjust properly you really need an anylizer but I guess with as
much experience as Rob has he got it close.

The answer is NO. You MUST remove the torsion bar to remove a door. Be
very careful working around the torsion bar, see the archives and old
posts on the subject. It also isn't worth the work re-aligning the
door after removing. Get a string and tie the door part-way closed as
you sit on the door sill. Tape all sharp edges inside or you will get
sliced up.

Re the Gold Deloreans,  about all I really know is what I READ (like everyone else) and I have most of the books and magazines that ever referred to the car.   From what I have gleaned from these sources, plus a couple phone calls, it appears that the two gold versions were built and ended up in museums.....at the time one of the articles said that it was "required" that parts be available for all cars.  So this included a full set of gold plated panels for repairs......when the company went belly up, someone decided those parts could be used for the third car so either the last car or near the last car was assembled by the workers WITH the gold panels.  

A few years ago the owner of this car let word out that he wanted to sell it.  I thought his price was awful low (at that time 75K) and called him a couple times.  He told me the cost of insurance was astronomical and he had in mind charging admission to SHOW IT.  It turned out to NOT be a practical money making venture at all so he wanted to get rid of it.  By the time I had thought about it for a short time and called him back, it was already sold.     FWIW Dept.

Well Doug I was trying to be nice :-)  I am very sad to hear you have sold
