I think that the car had a fuctional Citroen 4 cylinder engine, but I
don't know how it was mounted (rear like the current PRV-6 or
transverse-ish like the Fiat prototype used to test the engine
placement). Not sure about the headlights, but I'm pretty sure that
the clearance lights were battery powered and the tail lights were
non-functioning mock-ups. In several books about JZD & DMC this car
played an important part. Along with it was shipped at least 1 other
car that was fitted with a PRV-6 motor, and this was the car the
engineers sneered at and made fun of (i.e. all of the welds in the
exhasut system). Once it arrived the only thing more to ever be
written about it was that the guys @ Lotus didn't care for the V-6
engine, and "...drove the 4-cylinder even less." Where this car ended
up, I'm not too sure, but it may still be sitting on Lotus' property.
A while back the DOC (I think) posted photos of a DeLorean prototype
car sitting on Lotus' property. Lotus denied that the car was even
there, so they wouldn't allow anyone to move it (I'm was confused
too!). The pictures shown a car that was beyond a state of disrepair,
but still had a great amount of historic value to it. Though I'm
still not sure if this was the same car.

The prototype was spotted sitting in a driveway rotting away a few years ago.
If you search the archives you will find the post. The person desribes it
as a car with no louver and the sliding windows which never went into a
production car so it must be one of the prototypes. keep in mind that there
were almost 20 prototype vehicles.
Does anyone know where the "first" De Lorean is now. My friend bought
Bricklin vin#001 in 1981 from a museum in Chicago (Skokie). The first
DeLorean and also the first 300 sl gullwing were there also. the owner of
the DeLorean offered to sell the car for $60,000 in 1981 but he was not
interested in the DMC. (he just bought one last year) Does anyone know
anything more about this DMC, is it still there?
He now has Bricklin #001 up for sale for a rediculously CHEAP price. It
has basically never been touched its whole life, museum and then to a lift
where it sat in a carcoon. I went to see the cars(he also owns the last
Brick) and they are prefect. The reserve for 001 is well under $20,000 which
I think is a bargain for such a rare car. it has no mods and even the
original hydraulic doors. just curious about the first DMC. sorry if I got
a little off of the DMC topic.

I love the tool both windows on my DeLorean! Yes I can only use them
for drive up currency transactions, ie. paying utilities, tolls (if I
ever find a toll both!:) ), and so on. But they provide me with great
benefits that full roll down windows could not have; if I do go to
fast food drive thrus I have to open the door because of them:
opening door+car in public= attention! Last but not least when I
drive down the street or highway I can roll both my windows down for
a great breeze without getting my hair all messed up! Plus they look
really cool on the car. Bottom line: I wouldn't have them any other
way!

I just purchased replacement window motor assy's.
Here is my story:
I have access to everything inside both doors, all panels are removed.
And these are my problems:
On the passenger side I have rolled the window a bit down so as to get
access to the to nuts that hold the window to the worm gear. One of the nuts
loosened easily, the other is movable but it is just spinning around. How on
earth can I loosen this one????
On the drivers side, the window is stuck in the closed position, meaning
that the access to the two nuts on this side is virtually impossible. I cant
lower the window enough (read: I cant lower the window at all) and get
access to the nuts through the hole in the door.
Is there anyway to do a shortcut so that the window will lower?
Please respond list, I really need help here!

A couple of answers - first, RTV will dissolve in gas in short order.
Any of it that falls into the tank will do Bad Things to the fuel
distributor or injectors. Bad Idea.
Also - there is no way that the gas is coming up through the boot and
sitting on top of the pump unless you completely forgot the hose
clamp that holds the pump into the boot, or the boot is totally
destroyed. One of the banjo fittings or hose fittings above the pump
is leaking. Check those, and maybe replace the brass o-rings around
the banjo fittings.

Not exactly DeLorean related. But just to clarify there have been other cars
mass produced with a smaller tire/wheel combo on the front than on the rear.
The first that comes to mind is the Plymouth Prowler, but there are others.

I HAVE JUST INSTALLED A NEW DELCO REMY ALTERNATOR ON MY 81 DMC.
THE OLD ONE ON IT ONLY HAD THE HEAVY LEAD WIRE HOOKED UP AND DID NOT REGULATE
THE CURRENT, THUS BURNING IT UP.
IN INSTALLING THE NEW ONE WITH BOTH WIRES IT OPERATES AND CHARGES CORRECTLY,
BUT IF I TURN THE KEY OFF IT KEEPS RUNNING.
THE DASH ELECTRICAL TURNS OFF, AND THE RELAY IS CLICKING.
IF I REMOVE THE SECOND MONITORING WIRE [THINNER ONE] OFF THE ALTERNATOR IT
WILL CHARGE AT FULL LOAD, AND WILL TURN OFF WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED OFF.
I AM TOLD TO CHECK THE DIODE? DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE AN ANSWER FOR ME?
TRYING TO GET ON THE ROAD THIS WEEKEND BUT NEED TO RESOLVE THIS ONE. MAHALO,

Its Eurofest 2001..not 2000..I wouldn't worry too much about getting into
trouble in Northen Ireland, my 21 year old son has just come back from his
latest holiday there..the press always exaggerate any small troubles.
The vast majority of Irish people, North and South, are the friendliest
people you could imagine, but as in any society there are one or two
"nutters" .I would have thought that you stood a much bigger chance of
getting into bother in any number of American cities!!

Subject: Repaired shift linkage (automatic owners look too!)
After performing the repair that I mentioned in the previous post,
and making sure that every single portion of the shiftlikage was
lubricated, all is back to where it was before. When selecting gears
the linkage is alot quieter now and it is much easier, with one
exception. Reverse, 3rd, 4th, & 5th gears go in w/o a problem, but
1st & 2nd do not. To get into these gears I have to pull up on the
stick & pull over like I would when I go into reverse, but instead I
only move the shifter over slightly. With the shift boot & rubber
seal off I can now see that when I move the shifter over, it ends up
pulling the shift cable a little bit more. In order to cure this I
will have to shorten the length of the shift cable, then all should
be fine. Though it should be noted that when I looked inspected the
linkage before hand there was NO lube on it what so ever!
Why the pivot bolt snapped...
The problem that I and other owners have had with the pivot bolt
breaking was probably caused by one of, or both of the following
problems:
1. Lack of lubrication between the pivot bolt itself and the
gearchange assembly. This combined with 122° plus temperatures
outside (and heat directly from the engine) may have caused the
assembly to 'grab' the bolt, and shear it into 2 pieces.
2. (before we continue, keep in mind that when shifting into 2nd
gear, the gearchange assembly rotates clockwise) By a sift cable not
being adjusted properly, 1st & 2nd gears are unaccessible. The
result? When attempting to shift into 2nd, the transmission refuses
because it's not in place internally to go into the gear because
the cable is not pulled over far enough. Hence the rear gearchange
tube will not budge. Now when everything is supposed to work
properly, the assembly rotates by the pivot bolt that stays in place
and does not move (fulcrum). When the rear gearchange tube doesn't
move, but the front gear change tube is still able to, this changes
the pivot point (or fulcrum) over to the bolt connecting to the rear
tube. Rather than equal forces against the pivot bolt, the whole
assembly is then pushing against on side of the bolt. The more
pressure that is applied to the bolt, the more it will bend untill it
snaps in half.
Cure and maintenance...
In the previous post yesterday I posted both permanent and temporary
fixes, so there's no need to repost it (but It will be together
with this for the technical library addition). What I would reccomend
is that you add lubricating the shift linkage to you list of periodic
maintenace for things such as chassis & angle drive lubrication.
Doesn't require as much attention as the engine oil, but is more
vital to your car's operation that the angle drive. Altough no less
important! For a visual inspection a compact mirror would probably
work fine.
What this means to automatic owners...
If you own an automatic DeLorean and didn't know it already, guess
what, YOU HAVE THE SAME TYPE OF ASSEMBLY! According to the parts
catalog though, none of the parts are interchangable. But I would say
that the odds are in your favor. The only time you would move the
linkage is when you select P RND21. As opposed to a 5-speed where the
linkage is moving constantly. Still, I would give the linkage
attention to make sure it's lubed properly. Even though you have less
of a chance then manual owners, pivot bolt(or any other linkage bolt)
breakage is a possibility.

noise isolator installed. With out this rubber seal in place, the
passenger
compartment is LOUD from all the road noise comming thru!

I was just watching the Spring Break show on MSNBC (Yea, yea.. I know...
but I tend to stop at a channel when I see girls in bikini's!).
Anyway, at about 37 min past the hour, they were talking about a group
of girls that drove to Daytona Beach. One of the first scenes of them
driving on the beach, there is a quick 1 second shot of a DeLorean
parked on the beach.
Anyone on the list in Daytona for Spring Break 2000? That may be your
car on TV!
I think MSNBC has been running the show a few times a week, so if you
catch it keep your eyes open for the DMC!
