Reversing the wires is not recommended. I had the same problem as you, and
DMC Joe explained to me that when the wires are reversed, the motor could
cause a short circuit if anything metal touches it. It's unlikely that
anything would, but it is possible... especially if you are doing something
under there with a screwdriver.

Anyway, I have a better fix. It's a little more difficult, but extremely
effective. You don't have to switch any wires whatsoever. If you are
interested, let me know and I'll give you instructions.

A vacuum line runs just in front of the engine and parallel to the fire
wall. If this vacuum line gets disconnected, the blower will actually feel
like it has reversed itself. This happened to me when I replaced the water
pump.

OK, I pretty much think I'm going to attend, with or without a car,
but that raises another question:  I'll most likely be attending by
myself, and would like a way to find any other D owners at the show
who might have an empty seat they wouldn't mind sharing for the
"cruises" around the city.  I suppose I'll have a rental car, but I
can't see driving that around behind all the D's... ;)  

Ken, do you think there is any place/time to post/maintain a list of
rides wanted/rides available?  If I do attend, I'd be happy to help
coordinate such a list, assuming there are others in the same
situation.

Also, which airport?

As Ken said, the response to the two driving events has been overwhelming.
Because of the large number of participants we have made a few changes from the
original plans.  The events keep getting better.

When you get your information in the mail, it will include a letter explaining
all of this.  But for those who are curious now, here is the plan:

THURSDAY EVENING: ORIENTATION TO CLEVELAND
Departing 6:00 - 7:30 PM

Thursday evening we have a short self-guided orientation to downtown Cleveland.
This should help make everyone comfortable with the area where they will be
spending their next three days.  It will depart from the Holiday Inn and end at a
secret location in The Flats, where we will have a private cocktail party
reception.  The cocktail party will have an open buffet of hot food (pizza,
chicken, etc.) and a cash bar.  We will have the room from 7:00 to 10:00.

The number of participants has exceeded the size of reservation any restaurant
will take, so we have done away with the buy-your-own-dinner plan.  Instead there
will be a fee of about $20 per person, collected at departure, which pays for the
party facility and buffet.  When you arrive at the party, secure parking is
another $5 per car.  In the end this should be more fun and less expensive for
everyone.

To participate, make sure you check the box for Thursday night on the
registration form.  On Thursday night, show up at the Holiday Inn (either in the
lobby or the driveway) any time from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.  Patti and I will be there
to collect your $20 and give you admission tickets and your orientation
materials, which will lead you to the cocktail party.  When you arrive at the
party in The Flats, other DCO members will be there to greet you.


FRIDAY: DRIVING TOUR / RALLYE
Departing 9:30 - 10:00 AM

The "Nobody Gets Lost Driving Tour and Rock & Roll Road Rallye" will depart from
the street behind the Great Lakes Science Center (very close to both hotels)
around 9:30 AM Thursday.  We have so many cars that it may take half an hour to
get everyone on the road, so please be patient.  The tour will involve about 90
minutes of driving in three 30 minute legs.  Stops include NASA Glenn Research
Center and the President James A. Garfield Memorial, plus lunch.

You should be back to your hotel around 3:00-4:00, leaving an hour or two free
before leaving for dinner at the Crawford.

Originally, we thought that about half the people coming to the Car Show would
want to take the Driving Tour, while the other half visited museums and went
shopping.  So far about 90% of you want to take the Driving Tour.  This means
there is going to be a VERY impressive fleet of DeLoreans crusing the streets of
Cleveland that day!  Be sure to bring a camera.

If registration keeps up this brisk pace, we may need to change the schedule a
bit so that everyone has time for lunch.  There is also the possibility that will
will need to cut off registration soon, so I recommend you send in your
registrations ASAP.  Stay tuned to the DML for updates.

The final information will be explained in the mailing you get from Ken.  When it
arrives, please be sure to read it.

Don't know if any of you guys made it out to the New York Auto
Show.......but believe it or not there was a Delorean there that was
getting much more attention then any of the new concept cars .....There
was an exhibition of important cars from the past and sure enough there
it was......They hade a huge blow-up mural in back of it of a picture of
the original Delorean stand at the show years ago and a small write up
of the car.......I was so surprised of the attention the car was
getting.....If anybody else on the list is going ...make sure to bring a
camera!!!!

      Being a new owner, I am already having problems with my car. The
brakes need a little help. Here is the problem. When I apply gentle, gradual
pressure to the pedal, it will go almost to the floor, and then catch. Even
then the grab doesn't seem very strong. Despite this, when quick, abrupt
pressure is applied to the pedal, the brakes grab fine and hold strongly.
What is this? Is my master cylinder going out? I need help. Where is the
best place to take it...and DeLorean specialist or a local, common brake
repair facility (ie Midas). Any info would help. Also, there is a fiber-like
covering directly in front of the belts in the engine compartment. It is at
the very front of the engine compartment when you are facing it. What the
hell is this. Is it made of asbestos? I hope not. Mine has been shredded by
a broken belt I think. Where can I get a replacement? Any info would help!

There are three different versions of the owners manual as far as I am aware.

The 1981 version is spiral bound along the top edge, and has actual
photographs for the illustrations, whereas the 1982 version is
"saddle-stitched" (folded sheets stapled in the fold) and has line
drawings for illustrations.  The illustrations are printed in black
and highlighted with a funky kind of yellow color. This is the
version that is reproduced and sold by most, if not all, of the the
major parts suppliers, though it is printed in black and white only.

There is a 1983 version, but I think it is almost exactly the same as
the 1982 version, except that it is printed in one color for the text
and illustrations.

There were different valets also for the 1981 and 82/83 models. The
reproduction valet that we sell is for the 1981 models.

The airport if you arrive is Cleveland Hopkins airport.  You really don't
need a rental car .  Use the rapid transit that you can catch right at the
airport and get off at the est 9th st stop.  This is less than a two minute
walk.

Also there are a number of solo Delorena owners going so if anyone on this
lis would like a passenger for the ralleys e-mail me and I will keep a list. 
I will not publish it but will keep track of who needs a ride and who will
provide one.

If you can bring your car pleasee do
Its hard to get 100 DeLoreans if they are left at home
I understand sometimes the distance or time is too much but if you can I
would appreciate it

Sounds like master cylinder or air/water/dirt in your break lines ..
I'd try bleeding the system... if that doesn't work, you may have to replace
the cylinder (which is -very- easy to do) ...  I had the exact same symptoms
and after I replaced the cylinder, it was all OK. If you open up your fluid
reservoir (under the carpet in the trunk) and it's brown in there .. I'd get
a
new cylinder and bleed the system when you put the new one on ... when
I bled the system before replacing the cylinder, my brakes we virtually
non-operational... I think the gunk was acting like a seal inside the worn
cylinder.  I don't have any experience with having the brakes done at a
shop, but it's very basic for me (a non-mechanic) to do, so I'm sure any
shop could do it for ya....

This is the muffler heat-shield .. it keeps your muffler from melting your
belts
or hoses or whatever ... I'm sure it's readily available and could probably
even be home-made from a sheet of heat-shield material... I think there was
a thread about a stainless steel replacement that someone had created,
although there was debate on how effective stainless was as a heat
retardant.
It sure would look nicer tho ;)

Your brake problem sounds as if you have some air trapped in the lines.  Have
you checked the fluid level of the brake master cylinder?  A brake system
flush and air bleed is a good place to start.  Consult the technical manual
for that procedure.  If that doesn't help, find a mechanic to help you out. 
Another possibility to check into is worn out calipers.  If your car sat for
any extended period of time, the pistons in the calipers can stick which
greatly reduces your stopping power.  Local owners around you may be able to
steer you in the right direction.  If not, do a little calling around to find
a mechanic you can trust. 

The fiber-like covering is a heat shield and you are right, it is asbestos. 
You can replace it with the same material or I believe there are other
alternatives, such as stainless steel.  Check the dmcnews website for that
info.

The replacement was, mysteriously enough, a GMC key.  It works great.

Your sinking brake pedal may be caused by air bubbles in the brake lines.
Take your DeLorean to your local reliable auto repair or brake specialty
shop and ask them to bleed the brake lines.

The asbestos like item you are describing is the muffler heat shield part
no. 106931 available from us or your favorite DeLorean part supplier.

Subject: Yokohama Speed rating

I recently was searching through tirerack.com browsing for tires that
fit the size of the DeLorean. I came across the Yokohama AVS
Intermediate which we all know are the best tires currently available in
the stock sizes. But what I noticed was a speed rating on the 195/60 14
and 235/60 15 was "V" (149 mph). I always thought that they were "H"
(130 mph). Does anyone who has recently purchased these tires care to
say what the speed rating on their side wall is?  I know that a stock
DeLorean can't really get above 130, but modified ones can.  So this
just makes me curious and I'm sure owners of Turbo'ed and engine swapped
D's would like this too.
