Dear DML,
I am locked out of my driver's side storage compartment.  I know one that
works will turn 90 degrees "left to right" in order to unlock it.  Well mine
just turns 180 degrees and I can't get into to save my life.  Does anyone
know
of a way to get into the compartment or am I locked out forever?
Also, while cruising down West Market Street in Greensboro North Carolina I
spotted a D at a service facility.  It's an 83 VIN 16710 with black interior
and a 5-speed.  Just wondering if anyone on the list owns this car.

I just went out and looked at mine. Remove the shelf above the
compartement and you can see the lock by looking down the inside with
a flashlight. Should be able to open it with a screwdriver or some
slim tool from above.

Hello,

        I recently noticed a problem with my automatic transmission.  When
pulling away from a stop it is often very slow to pick up speed.  I
suspect that it is still in 2nd gear, having not downshifted into 1st when
I came to a stop.  Other times times just as I start going it'll make a
quick downshift.  I hadn't really noticed before (I've only had it about 8
months) because sometimes it really grabs and takes off fast like its
supposed to and other times it does the slow start or quick down shift
thing.   I'm thinking that the governor might be bad since its at the
45,000 mile mark. Could it be anything else (something simpler and cheaper
I hope) or if not, is there a way to test the governor to see if it went
bad?  Also, I heard there are transmission coolers that'll prolong the
life of the governor.  Any advice on using one/where to buy them?  Thanks
all. :)

Please allow me to answer a lot of the questions being posted about the
"Back to the Future" DeLoreans that have been posted in recent days.

1.  There were a total of 7 DeLoreans used throughout the trilogy, not
counting miniatures or full-size fiberglas models.

2.  The BTTF DeLorean on display at Universal Studios Florida the last time
I was down there (January '97) was *not* used in the films, regardless of
what the sign says.  I've heard in recent months that a true film-used car
has been sent to Florida to replace the one that had been down there, but
I've been unable to confirm this.  In 1993, Universal commissioned the
construction of 4 new DeLorean time machines for promotion of the BTTF
Rides.  One of them for sure was sent to Florida at that time.  Another
ended up at the Hollywood Casinos in Tunica, Mississippi.  Another was sent
to a Planet Hollywood (I do not know which).  And the last one was supposed
to have been used for various car shows, etc., but I have no idea where it
has ended up.  One was sold in an auction in Los Angeles last summer, and I
suspect it was this fourth car, but I do not know for sure.

3.  The DeLorean used for the final shot with the train in BTTF3 was a real
car, so to speak.  It was a shell of a car, without an engine, and not
drivable.  They were actual DeLorean parts, assembled on the tracks to be
easily strewn about when the train hit it.  They did not throw one of the 7
cars onto the tracks to let the train hit it.  The whole sequence was not
done with miniatures like the scene before it where the train went over into
the ravine.

Oops, I guess I started quite a discussion.  Please understand, I no longer
have that car so suggestions are of little use to me now.  My current car
is an 83 5-speed with twin turbos and the difference is astounding.

For what it is worth, I had those twin turbos on the automatic 81 for
nearly 50,000 miles.  They were installed by one of the reputable, full
time DeLorean service centers. (This was in 1987)  The car was in for
service a number of times and I always commented upon the slow pick-up.
Nothing was ever found to correct it.  I suspect that a higher stall speed
converter would have done the trick, but by the time I figured that out, I
was trading the car.

Cruising at 40-55 and needing to pass, I would drop it into second (as
opposed to kicking it down via the accelerator) and it would FLY right up
to 75-80.  But dead stop acceleration was atrocious.

I'll not comment on this thread again.

I found it.  My local auto parts stores had not heard of this product, but
the True Value Hardware store stocks it in the household cleaners area.

Haven't tried it yet - car is "in mothballs" for the winter, but simply
wanted to point out where it might be found.

I've seen it asked several times before but never answered:  Is there a
supercharger available for the
PRV6?  I have a buddy in the auto magazine publishing biz, and he-by way of
his connections-has
both Paxton and Vortech superchargers in his Mustang collection.  Anyone
ever try fitting one to their
DeLorean?

Sean, Your computer is dead.  If you continue to drive your car you run the
risk of causing more damage than there may already be.  You need to have
your transmission inspected and computer replaced.  If there is nothing else
wrong, it shouldn't cost you more than $100 to have it inspected and have
the computer replaced. Just buy the computer before, some places will try to
turn a profit for parts they buy.

To make extra sure your computer is dead:

1. Pop the engine lid.
2. Pull the round cap off the tranny computer wiring harness.  It is located
on the driver's side firewall.  This should reveal 5 brass pins: 2 ROUND and
3 HEX.
3. Start the car, shift into "D". (the handbrake should keep the car from
moving forward, but you may want to have someone in there holding the brake,
or wedge something to press the pedal.)
4. Use a 12v test light to connect the MIDDLE HEX pin with each of the
outter HEX pins (one at a time).  If both positions result in the light
illuminating, your computer is probably not at fault.  If either or both
positions result in no illumination, you have a problem.
5. Immediately drive the car to verify your problem case is happening.  If
not, wait overnight and repeat.

typefaces are NOT copyrightable in this country hence why there's so many
variations on a theme out there. Now if you had a business, and copped the
trademark yes youre on legal thin ice - and if you have a typeface that
uses DMC as a mark in the library then there's restrictions as well. But
using the face itself isn't.

Take it from someone whose been doing design with legal departments
present for 9 years.

It's not that big of a deal messagewise - and can be confirmed on many
websites that deal with typography and font design.

GUEST MODERATOR'S NOTE: OK, this time a REALLY mean it. This wraps up this
thread.


Hello:

I've been on the list for some time now and can say that I find the BTTF
questions and speculations amusing.  A few months ago, I asked Mr. Espey if
he
would consider making a separate FAQ section just on the BTTF DeLoreans.  I
never heard from him.  There are a lot of theories about these cars, but I
can
set all of you pretty much strait.  I realize though, that I am not
infallible, but from a lot of research and inside knowledge on this subject,
I
can assure you that the following is at least 95% accurate.

I worked on the Universal backlot for some time and besides that, did a lot
of
research on the Back to the Future DeLoreans for my own interest.  As has
been
said before, a total of nine (9) DeLoreans were used in the filming of the
trilogy (all 3 films).  However, there were only seven (7) ACTUAL DeLoreans
used.  The other two were fabrications, one being complete with folding
wheels
and another (cockpit only) made simply for interior shots.  The latter of
which resides at Universal Hollywood and is used on "The World of Cinemagic"
show.

For the first film, the producers sent the transportation crew to the
classified ads to find three (3) used DeLoreans in fairly good condition.
Total purchase cost for all three was $50,000.  All three cars were then
taken
to a North Hollywood special effects shop for modification.  Two cars kept
their engines and the third remained stationary for insert shots, close-ups,
or, if need be, cannibalized engine parts.  For the "Mr. Fusion" conversion
at
the end of the film, one of the cars ( I refer to as #2 ) was retrofitted
with
the new reactor.  The best of the three cars, otherwise known as the "A"
car,
is rumored to now be in Spielberg's possession.  This has never been
confirmed
(not even by me on the lot) however, it is highly likely that it's tucked
away
at Amblin Entertainment's well-guarded facilities at Universal.

Read the following carefully, it can get confusing.  When the filmmakers
started working on Back to the Future Part 2, another 3 cars (4, 5, & 6)
were
purchased and transformed into the "Mr. Fusion" reactor version.  One of
them
was made into an exact "normal" copy of the "Mr. Fusion" from the first
film.
This car was accompanied by the two "process" cars (8 & 9) that were total
fiberglass fabrications.  The other two actual DeLoreans purchased (5 & 6)
were reserved solely for BTTF Part 3.   

During the filming of BTTF 2, BTTF Part 3 was in pre-production so that as
soon as 2 wrapped up, the filmmakers could immediately get to work on Part
3.
There was no break in between the filming of both movies, so the DeLoreans
had
to be ready for the crew.  The two reserved DeLoreans were turned into both
the "1955 version" with white walls and the other was retrofitted to run on
train tracks and serve as the "1885 version".  The location of the white-
walled DeLorean is in Hollywood on the Universal backlot.  It has sat
outside
for 9 years and is in awful shape.  The grill is now missing and the
interior
is scrap.  The train-converted DeLorean has been reported to be in Planet
Hollywood-Hawaii hanging upside down from the ceiling with a large dent in
the
hood.  

For the ending of the film, (a sore spot for all DeLorean enthusiasts) a
final
DeLorean was purchased (#7).  This car was a hollowed out junker that was
weakened and specially rigged by Special Effects Supervisor, Michael
Lantieri.
It was built to buckle on impact and send parts flying when the train hit.
After the actual collision was filmed, set designers took additional, pre-
smashed, DeLorean parts and made the wreckage more presentable and "orderly"
for filming with the actors.  This included repositioning thrown parts and
adding the seats and smashed time circuits. 

In addition to the 7 actuals and 2 fabrications, several models were
constructed by Industrial Light & Magic for special effects shots.  These
were
only used on Parts 2 & 3 and included a 1/5 scale "2015" flying DeLorean
with
actual lights and folding wheels, and a larger "1885" train version model
that
was pushed by a fully operational steam engine model.  However, the DeLorean
train-converted model was never pushed off the bridge.  Only the steam
engine
was sent off the miniature railroad bridge because the movie assumed that
the
DeLorean had already gone through time into 1985 instead of falling into the
ravine. 

So, there you have a detailed description of all the actual movie cars and
their uses.  Most of the original movie cars are still in Universal's
possession and are on display.  Rarely do they leave the Hollywood lot.
When
"Back to the Future: The Ride" came out, a new "fleet" of time-converted
DeLoreans were built and used for promoting the new attraction.  These are
often used on both lots (Hollywood and Florida) and are passed off as the
"actual" car.  Universal assumes people are gullible. 

If you go to Orlando, you will see many props with signs saying the "actual
so-and-so from the film..."  Don't always believe these signs.  One such
example of fraud resides in Orlando.  A sign has been placed in front of two
brown concrete cats that are labeled as "The Back to the Future Clocktower
Cats."  They are not the actual cats though.  The real ones, which are
actually black, reside behind a fence on the Hollywood backlot mixed in with
a
huge collection of miscellaneous signs, props and railroad equipment.  So
don't assume the DeLoreans are actuals either.  The easiest way to tell if
they are fake, is to look at the Mr. Fusion and see if it is actually a
coffee
grinder, and then to look inside at the time circuit switch (lever between
the
seats) and see if the lever is just a metal rod with a ball on the end.  If
it's a crude metal rod with a ball handle, it is fake.  Besides that, the
overall look of the fake cars seems very homemade and "different" from what
is
seen in the movies.

However, the "Jules Verne Train" on the Orlando lot is the real thing.  

This should end some of the confusion about the DeLoreans from Back to the
Future.  Maybe now Mr. Espey will provide a BTTF section on the website so
that we can direct such questions to the definitive FAQ section.  Hope you
enjoyed this insightful look into the only movies that showcase the DeLorean
as an absolutely awesome car.

where do you find another? You buy it from the DeLorean Motor Company..
on Ebay.

Yep, it looks as if our central source for all things DeLorean is now
selling items on Ebay. They currently have a DeLorean Postcard, an
Autoweek 2/11/80 - DeLorean Sports Car, a DeLorean brochure, a DeLorean
Motor Company logo label (the air cleaner part), a 1981 DeLorean Owners
Handbook, a DeLorean Dealer List, a DeLorean Motor Company News Release,

Hi Luke,
I to am a DeLorean fan in the UK, and would love to get my hands on a
RHD car. However, only 8 were produced, 2 of which went to Australia, so
your chances of finding one are very slim, and if you do, it is likely
to cost! I know that there have been a number of conversions done, but
to what quality I do not know. There are a surprising number of LHD
(legal) cars in the UK, but most people that have one, are rather
reluctant to let them go.

My DeLorean is a 5-speed, but I would like to buy an automatic some day
for my wife.  To that end I follow all the DML threads about automatic
transmissions with great interest.  I form this reply based on several
years of reading the DML.

At its core, the DeLorean automatic transmission is a strong unit.  Very
close versions have been used in other European cars and they are
considered reliable for well beyond 100K miles.  The special quirks
associated with the DeLorean automatic (governor computer location,
electrical connections, erroneous diagram in service manual, etc.) are
well known and documented in the DML back issues.  It is possibole to
correct / prevent all of these problems, making the DeLorean automatic
just as reliable as any other.

I believe that anyone is capable of being a happy, satisfied automatic
DeLorean owner as long as he/she does their homework.  If you are
serious about buying an automatic then it is worth the five or six hours
it would take you to search the back issues for the words "automatic
transmission" and read the stories, problems, and solutions discussed
there.  Each message in the back issues includes the E-mail address of
its author, so if you see something interesting you can contact them
privately to ask their candid opinions.

That may be, but if you look at the source code for this font, it says
very plainly that it was created by AXE Creatives. Whoever this person is
just changed the name on it and is passing it off as their own which IS
very illegal.

On Ebay, you can choose any handle you want.  Are you sure that this stuff

really being sold by Delorean Motor Company? or just someone who has used

as their handle?

BTW, now that EVERYONE knows about delorean items on EBAY, I am sure the
prices
will get stupid. (Well, even more stupid).  About a year ago, I was buying
great
Delorean stuff on Ebay for dirt cheap.  Now the same things I purchased a
year
ago for less than $10 are selling for over $60!

I've been using Never Dull for years to shine almost everything other than a
DeLorean.  Just one of those perks of being in the military.  It really
works
well and one tin will ast a long time.  I've also seen it in grocery stores
in
the cleaner aisle.

Help!  I am in need of a photo of a DeLorean, doors down, taken from the
passenger side: ie, so that the car looks as if it is moving from left to
right.  The simpler the background, the better.

I just discovered that in all the photo's I have taken in 17 years of
DeLorean ownership, I have none from this angle.

The photo will be used in an ad for a non-profit club.  No $$$ involved,
but you will receive photo credit.

Over the years as we have accumulated DeLorean parts from various sources
(including our KAPAC purchase in 1997), many times various memorabilia
has been included. Memorabilia doesn't fit in with our normal sales line,
so the items just sat here in our facility gathering dust and in some
instances, being damaged.

After careful consideration, we decided that the best way to dispose of
these items was through Ebay. Our reasoning included the following points:

1) Rather than let the items deteriorate, they should be in the hands of
those who would appreciate them, namely, DeLorean enthusiasts.

2) We felt it would be improper of us to arbitrarily place a value on
these items ourselves. We are not in the memorabilia business and have no
idea what the true worth of these items are too collectors. With Ebay,
the enthusiasts determine the value, not us.

3) We chose Ebay over another medium, like the DeLorean Mailing List, as
with the two different versions of the list, not all participants would
have an equal chance at the item. Again, with Ebay, everyone has an equal
chance at the items.

Earlier today Ken Montgomery mentioned the air cleaner label, which is
obviously not a memorabilia item. This item was offered in error and has
since been removed. The label normally sells for $1.74. Though the
bidding had reached $7.57 at the time we canceled the auction, we have
offered the item to all the bidders for the normal retail price of $1.74
plus $.50 shipping and handling.

Any item that we place on Ebay in the future will be a limited quantity
or one-of-a-kind collectible item that we believe deserves to be held by
a DeLorean enthusiast. We believe that Ebay is the most fair and
equitable way of disposing of these items,though we will continue to
explore other avenues as we are made aware of them.

I hope this clears up any confusion that may have arisen.

Dear DMLer's
       Has anyone gotten Historic License Plates for their DeLorean?  I
called
up the DMV today here in NJ and asked them about it, but they remarked that
a
car must be 25 years old to be eligible for historic plates.  My friend
informed me that in some states, not sure about NJ, that if the car company
no
longer exists and the car is not produced anymore, you can get Historic
Plates.  Getting the plates will greatly help with insurance rates.  Any
replies would be appreciative.

miles.  I have never had a bit of problem with the auto trans in it.  I had
asked to previous owner before I bought it about trouble with the tanny and

had told me he never had any problems with it.   The only thing I had done

it was change the fluid. Just my two cents.

This is true here in Minnesota. If the manufacturer is completly defunct the
car is elegeble. Last year they passed a bill allowing cars with these
plates to not have to display the front plate.

Two things make the difference. Gear ratios and torque converters. While
both types share the same final drive ratio the three speed automatic with
only three speeds just can't take advantage of the horsepower the way the
five speed does. The DeLorean doesn't have the modern technology that allows
for a lock-up torque converter so some of the horsepower is lost in the
'slush box' converter.

I am trying to locate a rebuild kit for the Delorean master cylinder.  I was
informed that the rebuild kit for this item is no longer available.  The
Girling part #SP7243, evidently has everyone at a loss in my part of the

Try PJ Grady for the rebuild kit. I would check the condition of the
cylinder before investing in the kit as I recently attempted to rebuild mine
and found the cylinder walls too pitted to rebuild  which I hear is a common
problem.

Also, I found an interesting tool in a Harbor Freight store today.  It is a
cargo holding bar for pickup beds, an adjustable rod with rubber padded ends
which extends from 48" to 70".  It makes a perfect brace to hold your door
open while replacing struts, adjusting torsion bars, or doing other door
repairs.  It was on sale for $6.95.  If you don't have a Harbor Freight
store nearby, their well-known catalog is available at 800-423-2567 (or
www.harborfreight.com).  Its item #33077-2ACA (may change slightly depending
on which catalog you have).

You can also try Apple Hydraulics (1-800-882-7753) if the master cylinder is
pitted.  They can re-sleeve it for about $70.  I have been very impressed
with their work.
