I'd never trust any jack. You MUST block the car up in some manner before
crawling underneath. Raddad and I lost a good DeLorean pal a couple of
years
ago because he was a bit careless in trusting his jack.

Actually someone has; The DeLorean Motor Company is now doing business out
of Houston TX. They sell and service DeLorean's, own the main warehouse
for
worldwide distribution, and even own the rights to the logo's. Although
not
manufacturing new cars technically the DeLorean Motor Company is still in
business. If anyone in the world could start manufacturing new DeLoreans
they would be the ones, all they would need is lots of $$$$$$$$$.

Subject: DML: Hylomar Sealer

I posted a few days ago wondering where to get Hylamar (sic) actually
Hylomar. This is the stuff used to re-seal the halves of the transmission
case where there is no gasket used. Thanks to advice from one of the list
members, I went to my local Jaguar/Alfa Romeo dealer and voila - Jaguar
part number JLM-9709 at a whopping $8.70 per tube. The main benefit of
this sealer is that it is non-hardening polyurethane base and does not
change composition in constant contact with gasoline or oil.

Someone mentioned Bill Ford, the new CEO of Ford.  He might have a =
division, much like Chrysler did, dealing with unusual, experimental, =
short run vehicles.  There seems to be a trend of large companies =
picking up small exotic producers of vehicles (for lots of reasons).  =
But why not a rust proof, gull winged sportscar in the vision of DMC =
from the likes of Ford?  =20

Right now the auto industry is consolidating, but with new technologies, =
it may be that new companies emerge in the transportation industry.   =
All aspects of the business suggest that this may be the case- the =
emergence of new entrepreneurial auto companies run in cycles and many =
of the electronic and electrical components in the cars for the first =
half of the 21st century will be outsourced and standardized, and the =
methods of distribution and sale are changing (see the new Saturn =
commercials?).  The big three (I mean two) are more and more marketers =
and final assemblers of components and parts produced and even designed =
by others. =20

It is certain that John D and his engineers got inspiration from those =
cars and designers that came before them, and the D being so unique will =
certainly inspire the next generation of car makers and designers (you =
know, all the 16 year olds that participate in this forum that don't own =
a D but think that BTF is the greatest creation of mankind- except for ="">
the D, of course...) .

Hey List,

  I just wanted to say that a while back when I was fixing the starter on
my
delorean, I had placed 2 cinder blocks one on top of each other under the
passenger back tire so I could reach to get to the 3 screws that hold the
starter in place.  While I was unscrewing the second screw the top cinder
block gave out and the car fell.  Luckily the bottom cinder block didn't
give
out because that was the only thing keeping the rest of the car from
crushing
me.  Oh yeah, the reason the cinder block gave out was because my brother
placed them with the holes facing sideways so it wasn't as sturdy as it
could
have been.  Now that is why I invested in jack stands they are pretty
cheep,
but it isn't the price that should get you to buy them it is your life
that
counts, and also I don't think you would want it be known that a DeLorean
either injured or killed a person, I think we are having a hard enough
time
with all those stupid "Back to the Future" jokes, right?  Anyway, I just
wanted to say that never trust your brother to place your cinder blocks
under
your car unless he will gladly lay under it with you, that is my
philosophy.

Bud,
The DeLorean clutch is non adjustable. Slippage is caused by a combination
of disc and pressure plate ware. The only solution is to have a complete
clutch job i.e.: disc, pressure plate, throughout bearing, pilot bearing,
rear seal, and have the pressure plate resurfaced if necessary. If you
need
more information let us know.

Government regulations and consumer expectations have evolved so far
beyond
what was produced in the very early '80's that a 1999 DeLorean would be
priced in the rarefied atmosphere of super cars  like today's twin turbo
Lotus Esprit. Of all the cars of this like, the Esprit is probably the
closest to what the DeLorean represented in terms of an engineering
presentation.

   I have been able to pick up a limited number of BTTF I Delorean model
kits. I know they are posted elsewhere on the net for various prices,
but I've tried to get them from the places that advertise them and they
are on permanent back order, regardless of price. I picked these up from
a collector and don't know if I can get more. They are unopened 1/24th
scale models. I am working on mine now and I plan to fashion a few
modifications (engine cover, louvers and probably sand off some of the
cables on the side) to make mine as close to my Delorean as possible.
So, if any of you might be interested in one of these, I feel confident
I can sell them for $45 including delivery to any US address. E-mail me
privately if you're interested. I'll have to go first come first serve

Hi I'm Brad Kinley and am 16 years old, I have been a huge fan of the
Delorean since I was six. It wasn't just because of the BTTF movies. I had
the chance to actually sit in one and I loved It. I imagined myself owning
one later on in life, and that has been one of my goals for quite some
time.

A decade later I am still crazy about the D, seeing people like you who
continue to talk about it is very encouraging to someone that would one
day
like to own one.

I was wondering, I live in Canada and wanted to know if there were many
Canadians that own their own Deloreans? I'm asking because, after some
research I've found there are practically no D's for sale in Canada.

First, the business: are there any generous Delorean owners in the Seattle
Eastside area that would be up for showing off their D to someone who's
seriously thinking of buying one but has never actually been inside one,
let
alone behind the wheel? And if they were feeling particularly generous and
had an auto transmission, permitting a hopeful future owner to take it
once
around the block (under a paranoid gaze from the passenger's seat, no
doubt)
? Since the good ones/good deals are always at least half a day's drive
away
and usually more of a plane trip, it'd be foolish not to see if I "fit"
(mentally; there's no problem physically) before I get that eager to lay
down cash for one.

Yes, I know about the PNDC; I'll contact & probably join them soonish. But
the DML is just so helpful in most other respects; I'm rather clueless
about
the mystical inner workings of cars, but just reading the list for the
last
few months is encouraging - there doesn't seem to be a problem that can't
be
solved with a quick archive search, list posting, or call to "DMC Joe"
(et.
al.)

And a more general question: out of necessity, most of the postings to the
list are regarding fixing problems with these vehicles (both because they
are approaching 20 years old and no-one complains when something isn't
broken). If well maintained and kept away from malicious SUVs in parking
lots, are they still reliable vehicles? Are they a maintenance nightmare
but
"cool enough to be worth it", or is the sampling done by the list truly
biased, and they're still good, fun cars?

And since I'm here - the epo-wood DMC-12 prototype pictured prominently in
"Stainless Steel Illusion" has the niftiest wheel covers I've ever seen.
They really make the car look that much more futuristic. Has anyone ever
attempted to produce real ones?

I was not going to comment in this thread because I thought it just went
with out saying that working under a car on a tire change jack was a bad
Idea.

Once I decided to buy a Delorean as a past time interest and built a
garage
for it the very next thing I got was a set of 4   jack stands and a 6 ton
floor jack.

I am amazed that any one would use bricks, boards, or any other shelf
building materials to protect their lives against sudden painful crushing
termination.

It is hard to imagine yet I suspect this sort of thing happens every day.
In fact I find my self thinking about some of the now popular TV shows
that
show people indulged in self involving accidents and titling it "funniest
home video" or some thing like that. I now realize that I should not be
surprised at all.

Lets hope that no one on the DML missed this thread and that we never ever
hear that some one has ended up dead under his D.

In these holiday season please get a car fire extinguisher and use safe
lifting practices.

Also on the subject of jackstands,make sure you set them up on solid
ground ie
blacktop, concrete floor ect,not on a grassy or sandy or muddy ground,you
can
bet your bottom dollar,that as your working under your "D",the frame
jacks,will tilt and eventually fall over and squash you flatter than abug.

Many of us have gone to a Centerforce clutch, a Rob Grady adjustable
clutch
linkage and, of course, the braided clutch line.  It's a very good set-up
and should give you years of service.

They are good, fun cars!  You should have no more problems with a DeLorean
than a similar (european) car of the same year.  Yes, there are a few weak
spots of the D, and if you buy a well maintained car, they should never
rear
their ugly head.. The electrical system is below average, the fuel system
has a few glitches, frame is prone to rust, and the automatic transmission
is junk, but most problems aren't very hard or expensive to fix. Plus,
there's a wealth of knowledge and help out there..

Just be informed about the car you buy, treat it good, and you should be
OK.
(Saving a little money for an emergency never hurt anyone though...)

Also, a little advice for you: learn how to drive a manual transmission. 
Us
non-car-types don't want anything to do with transmission problems, and
the
automatics are bad, bad, bad.  Not saying that yours won't work when you
get
it, but if you are planning on driving it regularly, you're in for a
potential headache... But, again, some folks have had fairly reliable
automatics.. Heck, the one time I called DeLorean One, Ed B. said he put
over 300K miles on his automatic.  (I bet it helps to -OWN- a service
center
though...)

On the same note, has anyone used those spun alumninum wheel covers (I

the Moon company makes them, but I've seen off-brand as well)?  I think
they'd look pretty wild on the D, but I didn't know what the side effects
would be (increased brake heat?)

Josh You have answered your own question --- the key is maintenance.  The
DeLorean had it's quirks.  It wasn't in production long enough to identify
all of them.  Thus, the first owners had to sort out a few bugs.  Long
ago,
any DeLorean that was driven on a regular basis had it's bugs worked out.

Now, you must deal with a car that is nearly twenty years old, both
technologically and in actuality.  It doesn't have all the bells and
whistles invented and put on cars in the past twenty years.  Also, this
means that the rubber may have suffered from dry rot, there may be a rust
problem depending upon the area in which the car was driven, some of the
wiring may be a bit tired and brittle, etc.

Having said all that, I trust my DeLorean - because I know it's level of
maintenance.   Three times this fall I hopped into it and took off on
trips
in excess of 2000 miles each and did not worry about the car not
performing
as intended.  It is as reliable as any other car given the appropriate
level of maintenance.

And, yes, take it from the 65 year old Rad Dad, the cool factor is
awesome,
dude!!

Today's problem: My driver's-side door decided to rebel (again). 
Whenever I
try to open my door, the rear latch opens, but the front latch remains
closed, so the door bends slightly and will not open due to the front
latch!
Here is the scenario, one method gets the door open:

When the door jams, which is now 100% of the time, I try the following and
then attempt to open the door:  1)   I push on the rear of the door (while
it is jammed) to shut it completely again - result:  the front latch
remains
jammed.  2)  I lock the door using the key, then unlock it using the key -
result: the front latch remains jammed.  3) I curse for approximately 1
minute, then try any of the above - result: the front latch remains
jammed.
4) I lock the door (using a remote for a car alarm that is wired to the
power locks), then immediately unlock it using the remote - result: the
door
opens once.  When I get inside and shut the door, it becomes jammed again
and the saga continues...

At first, I thought this was a latch problem, now the lock discovery
complicates things.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!  FYI: I
have
the door-latch guides.  My latest theory is that a minimum of one item on
my
De Lorean must remain broken at ALL TIMES;  this item cannot be a trivial
item, it must be an annoyance.

Hey Travis don't feel bad.  I feel the same way sometimes.  Halfway
through
replacing all weatherstrip on the car, my last problem was on highway,
70MPH, I felt a weird movement in the rear end.  Started to slow down and
move to slow lane; all of a sudden, one wheel locks up and I'm fishtailing
all over the highway.  Used up one more of my nine lives and pulled over.
My driver's side rear fender was in contact with my tire.  I've known
since
I bought the car that I should check the trailing arm bolts, but there's a
cover plate that can be a real project to remove.  Needless to say, Murphy
and his law got me again, and the bolt broke.  >From the looks of the old
bolt, bushing and washers, it took a LOOONG time from when the bolt
started
to bend until now.  The bolt itself is an M12, which should be at least
0.462" in diameter.  Mine is 0.435" at its largest diameter, and 0.379" in
dia. where it failed.  It looks like it was bent at a 10 degree angle
before
failure.  Bottom line is a failing bolt should be fairly obvious to spot
without special equipment.

If I had read this a week ago, I would have ignored it like many of you
will.  PLEASE check your trailing arm bolts.  You WILL lose control of
your
D if one fails.  The other (good?) side has locknuts (the ones that hold
the
bushing ass'y to the frame) that have loosened almost to the point of
falling off.  I had a periodic weird click in the rear end and knew this
was
probably the cause and ignored it.  I got lucky in that I lived and only
ruined one tire.  Total damage with new bushings, trailing arm bolts, two
tires, alignment I estimate about $400.  Save $250 by checking and
replacing
first.

Incidentally, the trailing arm bolts are NOT the same as those you can buy
at your local harware store.  They are ISO grade 10.9, nearly the highest
strength bolt you can get.  The nuts are similar.

Also, am I the only one that never had a use for a Dremel tool until I
bought this car?  I couldn't have done a few jobs on this car without one.

I know this will sound harsh.....removing the cover plate is any thing but
a project. Just 3 self locking nuts are removed to get this panel off.
While I did not have an accident because of the trailing arm bolt, I did
have the clunk and found that both had a 10 degree bend. I got the PJ
Grady
up grade kit and using Jack Stands installed the new parts.

I can't begin to stress that I could have been in the same situation had I
let the inspection go.
No matter what mental excuse might seam OK, the moment this bolt lets go
you will realized, may be for the last time in your life that you should
have.......!

The whole inspection takes an hours time, its simple and easy. Damage or
bending is obvious to the naked eye, There are no elaborate tricks or
special tools required, just time and a little work with hand tools to
remove and replace a few nuts and bolts.

All DeLoreans use a PRV-6 it is a V-6 174 cu. in. rated at 130 HP @ 5,550
R.P.M.
It uses the Bosch C.I.S. K-Jetronic fuel system. This engine was used
extensively in all Volvo 260 and 760 GLE model cars from 1979 to 1990.

That's an easy one. :}  It's the PRV-6, or as Volvo calls it, the B28F.
It is a 2.85L V-6 producing about 130 HP or maybe a tad more.  New engines
are available for about $4000 from DeLorean suppliers.  If you need to
replace the whole thing you have to use one of the DeLorean modified ones
or it won't fit.  It's a similar engine to that used by the Eagle Premier
or Volve 740 of the same era.
