Come on guys, I bought three sets so far.  The cards are high quality
and look great.  You do relize that the proceeds from these cards are
what keep this mailing list and the web page free for us.  Support the
list and keep this forum alive by buying a package of cards.  The cards
do not cost anymore than others, unless you buy the day after Christmas.

Subject: DML: My red twin turbo DeLorean

I'm a little behind in my e-mail and with catching up I noticed a few
references to my vehicle that may be of interest to some, although most
wives do not like my acquisition method. First, my son was only 16 when I
purchased the car. I just got a 71 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham (the Star
Cruiser as we called it) with 40K miles in immaculate condition to haul
the football team after practice. I took it to Cadillac by DeLorean in
Lakewood, OH for servicing in June of 84. In the showroom was a black
DeLorean. It looked really good painted. Long story short, I returned
later by myself and questioned the salesman about custom painting it a
red color and about turbocharging. I had read and still have a copy of an
AUTOWEEK article regarding turbocharging the car for IMSA racing. Being a
licensed SCCA competion driver, I was interested. The salesman took me to
the back of the shop and under a cover was  this candy red twin turbo car
which was Mark DeLorean's, John's nephew as Charles, John's brother owned
the dealership. I IMMEDIATELY ripped out a 5-digit check for deposit to
hold. He said they would have to clean, prep and tune it as it had sat
for quite awhile. I was going to be out of town for 3 weeks, one of which
was a family vacation in Ocean City. It was during breakfast I showed the
kids a picture of a silver DeLorean and asked what would they think if it
was red? My wife knew then I had already bought the car.
Insurance was over 2k just for the DeLorean. I had one (or two) speeding
tickets from my 280Z. The cost was twice that for the Cadillac, a Mark V
Lincoln and the Z together! The salesman did present my wife with a dozen
long-stemmed roses when I received the car.
I bought the car because I loved it. I had no idea about its history
until I met Elanore Rogers at the 88 DOA convention on the Cape. She
explained I had the first twin turbo designed by her fiancee, who passed
on and left the business to her. So, I am uncertain where or how he
contracted with Charles to do the work. My VIN # is 10006 and was made in
Dec. of 81. DeLorean was working with PPG on primer paints for the
stainless. I spoke with the painter who said it was presanded with 300
grit first before the other silver and clear red coats. All trim was
removed. Therefore, the paint and turbos were installed under the
auspices of DeLorean as it was to be a dealer offered option in 83 or 84.
My speedometer also was different, it was the 170 mph / dual kph. So, I
doubt it could have been an aftermarket so soon. I was also told it was
used in car shows to test people's reactions to the paint.
I've tried to keep it as original as possible. I had the turbos replaced
with identical IHI RB52 (same as Formula 1) and had the preoilers added.
These are gravity feed and will assure a lubricated turbo on start-up,
when oil is normally settled away from parts. BTW, the only time you get
overboost is when the wastegate sticks, which is why mine were replaced.
The wastegate is supposed to control this and it is why you must have and
LOOK at your boost gauge. The only design problem I have is ,early design
or not, the air cleaner is up against the rear of the alternator
breathing hot air. My next project is to rerout this to a better air
system. The car runs extermely well, but on a cold day, look out
Porsches!
I ran the Cannonball, One-Lap with my son in 91, it was a blast. The car
has been to all coasts. While caravanning with the Rad Dad and Bruce
Benson for the 91 Vegas show, I ran out of fuel 2 miles from the exit,
after passing 98 miles without services. I coasted 1 3/4 miles. I later
found out that my poor fuel mileage and poor performance was due to my
vacuum advance hose being disconnected while having my oil and air filter
replaced at a denver Monkey-Lube. The fun of ownership! I hope to have
more on the history of my vehicle soon.
I remember reading a long time ago about the Alpine GT (I was also a
rallyist) and its being a turbocharged variant of the PRV engine. Its
specs were quite impressive, which is where I believe People were using
it as a reference point. But you new driver/owners, if you want to drive
something fast, get a new car and abuse the snot out of it. Save the
DeLorean for cruising and fun, unless it already has a turbo system.
Otherwise, pull the engine and drop in something like the Lotus V8,
that's got to kick seriously. Happy motoring!!

Subject: DML: A little update info

Hi to the List of 100 and all us DML'ers

This is a very short info packet, so to speak.

First: I have not mailed any of the reservation certificates I mentioned
last monday but I will next monday, I must admit that todays icreport side
tracked my best intentions.

Next: There will be extra resin 1/24th scale DeLorean bodies available.
These are hand carved (Green-wax master) used for the limited edition
Delorean model kits. All the prepaid Kits will receive these super
accurate
resin bodies with separate fascia (front and rear) and the balance being
the polystyrene donor part.
more details and pictures will be posted on at the DMC message board and
Limited edition reservation site. I have set no price nor decided what
sort
of limitations will be.

What I have in mind is this:

Each lay up of a resin body will produce one "second"* for each 2 or 3
first quality reproductions. I expect to have a dozen seconds no matter
how
well the lay ups go. The resin is easily repaired ( faults corrected) and
there for be of value to either reservation holders who wish to have the
extra bodies as a stand by or for any one who wants to scratch build a
complete model. The surplus or seconds will not be available until all
reservations are filled.

I will post when the full Sept 98 up-date and pictures are up and
available.

Have a great week-end !

Subject: DML: Delorean Pricing

Well, James Espey just informed me that the car I was interested in
Arizona has already been sold.  I guess I was just too slow to go get
it.  But this makes me think of something else.  That Delorean was
advertised for $7000.  I have been looking for a Delorean in that price
range for a long time and I thought I had found it, but this one slipped
away.  Does the $7000 price mean it was really a beater?  It seems like
I have never seen one in good shape for that price, at least in the SF
Bay Area.  If anyone has opinions on buying Deloreans for that kind of
price, please post, I would like to hear.  If anyone has a Delorean for
sale, in the SF Bay Area, I'd really like to hear you.  Thanks very
much, this list is great!

The recent back issues will tell you that the Yokohama AVS intermediates
are probably the best choice at this time.  On that note, many places are
backordered for months on the rear size yokohamas.  I, however, managed
to find two places that claimed they could get them sooner.  Sears was
one, and got them only five working days after I ordered them!  They
even matched the mailorder prices.  The other place that claimed to get
them quickly was Discount Tire Direct.  I'm not endorsing either of these
stores, just wanted to mention them for those of you in search of
Yokohamas.

Thanks to all those that answered my questions about tires and wheels!

In the process of fixing the my door locks both locks froze up.  Neither

able to get out. :)  After freezing up both solenoids got super hot so I
disconnected the battery.  Now I'm not sure what's broken.  I suspect the
realy is fried and causing a short to the solenoids or something.  Is
there
any way to test this theory or should I just go ahead and buy LockZILLA?

Oil Filter:  Brand, size?
Spark Plugs:  Brand, Type, Gap?
Motor Oil:  I have an aftermarket Single Turbo, Is there a particular
Motor
oil I should use?
Do I really have to be a genius to change out the low beam headlight, or
is
there a trick? (Of course the screws are both stuck, and stripped out).
Is there a cross reference to the PRV6 that would make it easier for
AutoZone

Subject: DML: Expo Report (lengthy), includes funny stories

I meant to write an Expo report as soon as I got home, but after two
weeks away from the office I have just had too much catching up to do.
To get everyone else started, here were my experiences at Expo:

Driving up from San Diego my wife Patti and I had no trouble finding the
Universal City Hilton.  Without a single wrong turn we pulled our rental
car up to the main entrance.  A silver DeLorean parked in the valet area
told us instantly that we had come to the right place.

That week was hot and muggy, even by Southern California standards,
so after being greeted by the friendly SoCal DOA welcome wagon Patti
and I went straight to the swimming pool.  Anyone planning any future
weekend automobile events should note that it feels *wonderful* to
splash around in a swimming pool after a long drive.  Ahhh.

Thursday evening's reception dinner was held by the side of the same
pool, amid the palm trees and twinkling lights of LA.  As we arrived for
dinner, a musician was wandering from table to table strumming his
guitar, singing in Spanish, and taking requests.  As Midwestern gringos
Patti and I couldn't think of a single Spanish song, so we occupied
ourselves buying a double arm length of raffle tickets from Millie
Bernstein.  Patti later bought another double arm length from our friend
Montie Keaton.   Patti and I sat with Montie and some of our other Ohio
friends as well as David and Mary Lou Knudson (David is the DeLorean
World editor and Mary Lou is VP of the DOA . . . I'm such a name
dropper).

After the sumptuous Mexican buffet, Ed Bernstein began to draw tickets,
first for door prizes then for raffle prizes.  We didn't win any door
prizes,
but Patti cleaned up on the raffle prizes.  Before the night was over, she
won EIGHT very nice prizes!  So how come no one believes me when I
insist that my wife is the luckiest woman in the world?  I expect to hear
about this at every Expo from now on!

That evening Patti and I met fellow DMLer Ken Montgomery and his wife
Julie (or was she Judy?  Oops, my memory needs another cup of
coffee!).  We really liked them, and ever since we got home Patti has
been asking me "Did Ken post to the DML today?  How are he and his
wife doing?"

Friday Morning started out the tour of the Getty Center.  I have never
been completely in tune with this sort of high culture, but even I was
impressed by The Getty.  Perched atop a steep mountain, you reach the
Getty via a space aged version of the San Francisco cable car, which
adds to the drama of the setting.  The architectural style and landscape
are amazing, with many levels of buildings and gardens interconnected
by bridges and ramps.

By the end of Friday we had run into other DMLers, including James
Espey, Joe Steuben, and Scott Mueller.  Scott had driven his DeLorean all
the way from Alabama to California!  It was good to see Scott again, and
it was a real pleasure to finally meet Joe.  He is a great guy.

For me the highlight of the entire weekend came Friday night at the
Petersen Automotive Museum.  It is a fine car museum which displays
the cars in true Hollywood fashion, surrounded by period sets and props
which look like showrooms, filling stations, etc..  Eating dinner
surrounded by Duesenbergs, perhaps the most beuatiful cars ever
made, added to the thrill for me.

FUNNY STORY:
Entering the Petersen from the lowest level, one of the first displays we
came across is the museum's DeLorean, which had been detailed by
some DOA members just so it would look good for the Expo.  While
James, Patti, and I examined the car one of us must have gotten too
close because an alarm went off and a security guard came running.
We explained that we were just looking and quietly walked away.

Five minutes later we heard the alarm go off again.  Another victim was
caught by the DeLorean trap!  In a few more minutes the alarm sounded
again . . . then again . . . and it kept sounding periodically for at
least an
hour.  That security guard must have been awfully annoyed at us
DeLorean fans by the end of the night!

During dinner at the museum a small stereo played car songs, mostly
from the 50s.  This lead to the best part of the evening, the after dinner
game.  A quiz was passed out to each table to complete which asked
questions about those car songs.  Typical questions were: "Who was
Jimmy?" (answer: he was The Leader of the Pack) "Where was the Little
GTO headed?" (answer: out to Pomona).

Our table, featured James Espey, Montie & Amy Keaton, Bob & Ginny
Hillman, Lori Breer, and another couple.  We had a great time with that
game, and we won the prize!  It was a box of little chocolate cars to
pass around the table.

Saturday morning the DeLorean One Concourse DeLorean took place
right at the hotel, which made it easy for everyone to see the display.
About 12-20 cars were presented for judging, not one of them painted.
Another convention in the hotel at the same time was dedicated to an old
science fiction TV show (anybody remember Battlestar Galactica?) and
when that group saw the DeLoreans they swarmed out to the
Concourse.  They were in sci-fi heaven.

FUNNY STORY:
At the same time as all of this, the Products Fair was being held in a
hotel
ballroom.  Patti was sitting outside the Products Fair admiring her new
DOA jacket and DeLorean Christmas cards when Richard Hatch, one of
the Galactica TV stars, happened to walk by.  Mr. Hatch looked at the
DeLorean on the DOA's giant emblem, then at the profile of the DeLorean
on Patti's Christmas cards.

He asked Patti: "This whole convention is all DeLorean owners?"

"Yes.  We all have DeLoreans.  We love them."

Mr. Hatch admired the picture on the Christmas cards.  "Wow!"  he said.
"Those cars are sharp!  I wish *I* had a DeLorean!"

The climax of the weekend came the dinner that evening, when Leif
Montin and C.R. Brown gave their talks.  I expect almost everyone on the
DML recognizes both names, but if you don't:

Leif Montin was the service parts manager for the original DeLorean
Motorcars Company and has recently been retained by DMC Houston to
help coordinate their warehouse.  Leif is a great guy with many
wonderful stories and a DeLorean Owners himself.

C.R. "Dick" Brown was John DeLorean's Vice President at DeLorean
Motorcars.  His name features prominently in virtually every book about
the DeLorean.  Most of the books portray him in a positive light.

In the hallway before the dinner, Leif recognized Patti and me from our
visits to the warehouse in Columbus, and introduced us to C.R. Brown.
Mr. Brown instantly impressed us with his well spoken intelligence and
charm.  He chatted honestly and candidly about his days with DMC and
asked about our DeLorean ownership experiences with genuine interest.

Both Mr. Montin and Mr. Brown gave wonderful talks.  I wish I had them
on video tape.  Concentrating more on facts than opinions, C.R. Brown
expressed a very interesting take on the whole DeLorean saga which I
will not attempt to duplicate here.

FUNNY STORY:
Late in the evening I stepped out of the banquet room for a break and ran
into none other than C.R. Brown.  As we said hello a man in a gleaming
silver Battlestar Galactica robot costume walked by.  Mr. Brown tried to
ignore it gracefully.  Wanting to make conversation, I tried to make a
witty
comment.

"Look at that shiny silver and all all the sharp angles," I said " . . .
that guy
looks like he is dressed in a DeLorean costume!"

"Pardon me?" said Mr. Brown.

"He's all covered with silver metal.  He's got black trim.  He looks like
a
DeLorean."

"Ah, yes.  He does at that," said Mr. Brown, polititely pretending that he
didn't think the guy in the costume was just plain weird.

Sunday morning Patti and I were signed up for the L.A. Arboretum tour,
but we had partied so hard all weekend that we were beat.  I had lost
my voice and Patti had a wine headache.  We slept in very late, loaded
the remainder of those raffle prizes from Thursday night into our rental
car, and headed back to San Diego.  Tuesday we flew home to
Cleveland.

Can anyone else describe the Arboretum for us?  What about the tech
seminars?

See you in Saint Louie!

Thought I'd throw this out on the list and see what you all think.
I'm looking at a Nov. 1981 DeLorean for sale near my work, 5-speed, grey
int. It has 7K miles on it and appears to be true mileage. The seller is
the
original owner and the car has sat in his garage since 1984. It still has
the new car inspection sticker. It is at a shop now, they just replaced
the
whole fuel system(pump, lines, accum., filter) and changed all the fluids
and replaced the badly cracked NCT tires. The body is perfect EXCEPT for a
big crease in the lower rear quarter panel behind the wheel. The interior
is
good except for a ripped driver seat and some loose carpet. Car runs super
and looks Ok except for 14 years of dust and the bent Quarter. The car is
spotless underneath, doesn't even look like it ever hit the road. No fluid
leaks anywhere, epoxy cracking here and there. I got the seller down to
$11k
so far, gonna take it on a longer test drive this week. Does that price
sound fair for a car that sat so long? I know a lot of rubber parts will
need replacement, as well as the quarter panel and driver seat cover.
Anything else I should look at?? Any advise would be great. You can E-mail
me at DMC12@xxxxxxxxxxx

Guy, THANKS for this complete story about your car!  It is a added joy
of ownership to have a car with history behind it!

I also have a early version of the Island Turbo's, and am not happy with
the current air box setup and have noticed that it does run much better
on a chilly fall day.

I have spoken to a few people, including Rob Grady, and there has been
no modification to this setup recently. (I have not spoken to Eleanor).

Best I can figure, the only major modifications made to the system after
it's initial design was to replace the O2 (lambda) sensor, and add 2
hobbs switches to essentially disable the O2 sensor under boost.  They
have also replaced the mufflers with catalytic converters.  I am told it
is a bit louder with this setup.

Getting back to a re-design of the air box, I have considered modifying
the existing setup, but the amount of plumbing required may do more harm
than good.  If I had a few extra air boxes, I would be more willing to
start cutting, and gluing to make something work, but I have been
reluctant to destroy my air box.

Let me know if you come up with anything.

Hello
Its been a while since I've been online and I had a couple of things that
I
wanted to cover.
First is my congradulations to the DOA for another fine Expo.  Regretably
I
was unable to attend because of business obligations but from what I've

everyone enjoyed themselves.

Second I am updating my page and still am looking for a picture for the
home
page.  I announced a contest in June but have received only three
pictures and
none of them seem right.

I was looking for a picture of a D at The Cincinnati Car Show but I would
like
to open it up a bit wider.  If you have an outstanding shot of your
DeLorean I
would like to see it.  For those of you that remember from my DeLorean car
show web site I had one picture of Mike's D that reflected the gold paint
from
a tunnel and made it look gold.  It was a great unique shot.

If I publish it the winner will receive $25.00.

I prefere JPG format or photo

Thanks and see you soon.

Discount Tires, and they have preformed very well on it.

I plan on uploading my report to my website as soon as I get my photos
developed.
Personally, I had a great time at the Expo! Even though it was a bit
over-priced, I thought it was cool to see all those cars and hear owners
talk about their experiences as a DeLorean owner. Linda Porter was even
kind
enough to let me ride in her car during the caravan to the Arboretum, and
I've got to say that not only do DeLoreans look great, they drive great as
well (can't say much for those LA highways, though - very bumpy).

Jeff,
Here is the information you requested: Oil Filter: Fram PH-2825 or 2856,
Purolator PER-7, PER-19,F53191. Spark Plugs; Bosch HR-6 DR, HR-6DP
(platinum). Oil; nothing special here, any quality grade recommended for
your climate. As far as changing head lights the trick is to pull the
fascia up and around the lamp to gain access to the small Phillips head
screws that attach the trim frame around the lamp. Don't confuse the round
headed adjusting screws with the flat heads. If you have striped the screw
heads you will have to drill them out.
The generic call for the PRV-6 is Volvo 1979-1983 260/760 GLE V-6. Volvo
refers to this engine as the B-28F. As a suggestion purchase engine
components from DeLorean part suppliers, many items for the Volvo version
do not fit the DeLorean. You'll also find the DeLorean prices not very
different from other sources.

Subject: DML: Miscellany, part deux

I have two (okay, it was two, but then I thought of some more) technical
questions from the perspective of someone in the market for a D.

On the subject of cracking epoxy: If looking under the car, is there
anything special to look for when searching for damaged epoxy?  I know
that the areas around the suspension and transmission and engine mounts
are the ones that crack most often, but is it obvious if the epoxy is
damaged, or do you need to take special steps?  If your home is
Rust-Free(tm) like here in Colorado, do you even have to worry about it?

If the epoxy IS cracked, is there a way to repair it?  Whether I buy a D
with or without cracked epoxy, I plan to drive it frequently, so I assume
it will crack eventually.  While a stainless frame is pretty cool, I hate
to cough up $8000 and take the car out of service for a few weeks while I
take the whole thing apart and put it together again.  (I already did one
frame up restoration - not on a D - and am in no hurry to do another).

Angle drive: Has anyone considered producing a "speedzilla"?  Is there any
solution to the problem other than to grease it every thousand miles and
hope?  What if you go on a long trip?  I've been known to travel 1,000+
miles in a day- should I look for a hotel that has a courtesy workshop for
its patrons? :}

Oil: The owner's manual says to change the oil every 1,000 miles.  Is this
really necessary?  What if you have a turbo?

Seats: Do the seats recline?  If so, do they recline far enough for an
average-sized (5'10") person to take a nap in?

Subject: DML: Epoxy Damage and Reclining Seats

Bill Wilson asked a bunch of basic questions.  Here are some answers.

As far as I know you can see cracks in the epoxy with the naked eye.
However, there are many parts of the frame that cannot be viewed
while the body is attached.  Because frame-flexing causes many of the
cracks it is possible for cracks to develop even in these unexposed
areas.

You should be somewhat concerned about damage to the epoxy no
matter where you live, even in Colorado.  Even if your frame does not
rust away, cracked epoxy will reduce the resale value of your car.

When you check out cars for purchase my advice is to look over the
frame, but don't obsess about it.  There are plenty of other nuisances to
keep you occupied.

The seats do recline, but not far enough to lie down flat.  FYI  When my
wife reclines her seat she cannot see over the dashboard.  Typically the
DeLorean is not used as a camper.

Subject: DML: Aluminum Outer Door handles?

One of my outside door handles finally broke.  It is amazing that it
happened now, considering the two things that make life hard on door
handles are cold weather and a lack of door guides.  My car has seen
plenty of both, but it waited until there was neither before it broke.

The DML back issues mention that cast aluminum replacements are
available which are stronger than the original plastic handles.  Because I
live in a cold climate I would very much prefer to use aluminum
replacements.  Does anyone know where I can get them?

I checked the DMC Houston online store, and they don't list a choice of
plastic vs aluminum.  Who can I call to make sure I get an aluminum
handle?

I grease the angle drive when I change the oil.  I use water proof boat
trailer wheel bearing grease.  I just did a 4300 mile round trip to expo
'98 and have had no problems

The seats recline, I'm 5-8 and have had no problem sleeping in the car

Did the DeLorean transmission change significntly during the production
run?  Specifically, I'm interested in how the shafts and shifter linkage
connected.  I bought a transmission from another list member (I'll
refrain
from posting the name yet) and there are some significant differences
between mine and the one I received.  My car is a fairly late car
(11060).
Could this be from an earlier DeLorean or did I get jipped?

Some very early Deloreans with manual transmissions were different - the
factory parts manual shows them as "369-08 model" and "369-03" model. I
recall seeing a service bulletin on this reprinted in DeLorean World a
year or so ago. If memory serves the early one was the "08" model and was
only found on SOME cars up to VIN 700 or so...someone correct me if I am
wrong...

Call Warren anyway - there are a few items not listed in the web store
yet. I also think that DeLorean Motor Center in Garden Grove carries them
as does PJ Grady.

Subject: DML: The Jag Shop of Pompano Beach, Florida

Anytime I have the opportunity to visit a DeLorean service facility, I
always try to make a report to the list on what I discover. This past
weekend I went to the Ft. Lauderdale area and spent some time visiting
with David and Melissa Wynne, owners of The Jag Shop in Pompano Beach.
Don't let the name fool you, I saw twice as many DeLoreans there than I
did Jaguars.

David Wynne has been working on DeLoreans for over 10 years, both with
DeLorean One and DeLorean Motor Company (Houston). As Stephen Wynne's
nephew, he has an excellent "in" as you might imagine. Just within the
last year or so, David and and his wife Melissa opened their own shop in
Florida, and David already has a waiting list for cars to get in for
DeLorean service.

With plenty of indoor secured parking, no one should hesitate to consider
sending their car to The Jag Shop for service/restoration work. In
addition to service and restoration work, David occasionally has
DeLoreans on consignment there. A fellow DML'er recently bought a late 83
DeLorean, grey, five-speed with just 37.6 miles on it for $18,500 through
David and The Jag Shop. David intimated that the DeLorean market seems to
be depressed in Florida and told me the details of other cars that he
knows of for sale. If anyone is *seriously* interested in nice cars at
what I think are good prices, be sure and give David a call.

The Jag Shop is a terrific resource for owners in the southeast United
States, particulary those in Florida. I only wish that they had decided
to locate in Arizona!

will
try to get one scanned and sent out for your perusal...  currently I am
not at
home where the pics are, but I might be able to con pops into scanning
one for

out
the last issue of Delorean World's cover as well as the cover for the D
after
Nashville, in front of the hermitage... I will see what I can find...
