Chip,
Remove your shifter boot mounting plate to access the underside of your
dimmer control, place a jumper wire between the red/orange wires and the
red/white wire, your instrument lights should come on. If this works your
dimmer is N.G., if this is the case you can leave the jumper in place and
your dash lights will operate at full illumination.

Scott,
F.Y.I. an inexpensive rear mounted power antenna for the DeLorean is
available from Radio Shack at around $40, we have found it to be
comparable
to the original Harada. It does, however, require a slightly different
mounting from the factory set up. The factory issued an instruction sheet
on how to install the power antenna in post factory installed power
antenna

Couple of questions regarding the cooling fans:
My cooling fan "fuse kit" melted. As a result, I started checking
everything after replacing the fuse, and discovered that my right
cooling fans is inoperative.
1 - What is the Bosch model number to replace the motor unit?
2 - Is there any tricks to get the six bolts and support bracket
disassembled and reassembled on the fan(s) scroud system?
3 - Do I need to disconnect the passenger side radiator feed line/hose?
Any tricks or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I searched the
DMC news database base, but found nothing. It has been 12 years since I
replaced one and the details are fuzzy in my both head and in the
manual.
Again... Who knows the Bosch part number or cross reference number and
any suggestions or tricks. My car start running hot, in traffic, in the
100 degree Dallas heat, since only one fan is fully operational.

Hi. My name is Cole Stinnette. I am 17 years old and I just picked up my
DeLorean yesterday. It's an 81 stick-shift and has just under 20K miles on
it. I bought it at a used car lot near my home. Trouble is, they had to
order a new AC evaporator for it, and now that that's in there the battery
won't hold a charge and a lot of the electrical system is kinda screwy. My
blinkers, horn, dash lights, and interior lights are all out. It doesn't
matter if I push start it or jump it, if I try to restart the car after I
turn it off it just clicks. The voltmeter almost always shows 13 on it. I
also lost some coolant which I replaced with water. Do I just need a new
long-life battery? Maybe a battery cut-off switch? If anyone could help
me,

I have an '81 D stick shift. Lately, my courtesy fuse has been blowing.
Last
time it didn't last more than half an hour. As far as I can tell,
everything
works when the fuse in good. All interior lights, the door warning
lights, etc
all work fine. Then the fuse goes and the door ajar telltale stays on.
Also,
my alarm refuses to lock the doors because it thinks a door is open.
Both door
switches operate properly. Any ideas?

well it worked when i got it but i took my D out for a sunday drive and
i first started noticing a problem shifting into reverse. the thing
would ALWAYS grind. then later it started grinding into other gears as
well has trouble even getting the stick to shift into the slot. I would
think that this is a clutch problem? any ideas anybody? how much does
this cost to replace if this is the problem? thanx

In reponse to the questions that have been asked by the many people who
have considered purchasing a D(myself included). You really can't have a
specific answer for each of the questions. The one & most important
thing is to remember that no 2 cars have ever been, nor ever will be
exactly the same. There are of course the obvious(rust, over heating,
part replacement, etc.) that one can look for. But you can't just
consider those factors, the largest concern to look for in a D, or any
car for that matter is the owner. It takes 3 things to own & maintain
any car:
1. Time
2. Money
3. Passion
If any one of these is missing, your car will be more of a burdon than
it is a joy. But all three dictate the each other. How much passion you
have will determine how much time & money you put into it. But how much
time & money you put into your car is going to determine how much
maintenance will go in, and untimatly how much pleasure you will get out
of owning & driving your car. And once again all of these depend on what
kind of shape your vehicle is in. They can have problems just like any
other car, and some have truly been neglected. For example. There is a
guy here in Vegas who owns an '81. When he got the car, he was the 3'rd
owner. The car had been in storage by the first, restored & upgraded by
the second, & then sold to him. He bought it in March 1988, and in
September of 1988 the water pump went out. Money was not the issue, he
could afford to have the pump replaced. But he had no desire or passion
for the car to fix it. So ever since then his car has been sitting in
his drive way, just rotting away for the past 10 years. About the $300
for that new pump would have saved him the now $4-5,000 it would now
cost just to make the car road worthy. So in closing consider the most
important factor in owning a De Lorean, yourself. But don't stero-type
the car as a money-pit. If you love it and maintain it, it won't be! And
as far as using your car as a daily driver, then you just need to
maintain it as one. Expect a little more in maintenance for that extra
driving experience!

May I make a recommendation and do what I did... Take it to a DMC
facility. They
went over mine top to bottom and proactively fixed everything. Yes, you
will spend a
few dollars, but that goes with the sports car territory. Mine spent a
week with DMC
Houston. Since then two small things have cropped up... one cooling fan
"gave up the
ghost" and my speedometer died. I am sure the speedometer problem is that
famous
gear at the wheel.

After performing days of research, I am posing this question to DMCNEWS:
After recently moving to North Carolina for job purposes, I have looked
into
classic car insurance for my D - which is now uninsured! However it is in
storage and currently covered by the storage ins. Due to the fact I live
in
N.C., I have found NO classic car insurance company that deals with the
N.C.
insurance laws. All the usual classic car ins co (Hagerty..- all the ones
found in Hemmings- can't recall names) will provide Comp/Coll. however not
Liability (I hope I didn't get that backwards). This makes it a headache
to
break the D insurance payments between 2 ins. companies- and also
expensive.
I have also found NO other insurance company that is willing to insure my
D,
around here except for Allstate. Their premium is $700 per year w/250
deduct. (OUCH!) even with the multicar discount!
The same old answer from Ins. companies is "Can you tell me the cars name
again? Now what is the model again? What company makes it? ** do you
mean
a DeSoto? (!#%$@#@)
If anybody knows of an ins. co. that is based out of N.C.- it does not
have
to be a classic ins. co., that will cover a D here in N.C., please let me
know.

David - The windshield trim can be removed from the car.
Peel back the outer door seals to expose some screws. Remove
the screws to remove the trim. You will want to do the side pieces
as well because they will look pretty bad next to the freshly painted
header. Clean off the old adhesive with 3M adhesive remover
before painting the trim pieces. You might want to consider
replacing the outer door seals at this time, as long as you have
them off. If you don't replace them, remove the old adhesive from
the door seals before putting them back on the car. Use 3M
Weatherstrip adhesive (#8008) to reattach the door seals.

Two thoughts:
1) When I had my frame repair, after it had bee sandblasted, the welder
commented that he was affected by the fumes resulting from welding on
the frame. Presumably the fumes from some remaining epoxy. Weld in a
well ventilated area with good air movement.
2) I noticed after washing my car that it still seems dirty. I followed
up with Windex and it looks great. So where did the dirt film com from
originally? My conclusion is that a miniscule amount of dirt gets into
the pores of the stainless and this results in a dirty look unless you
wipe it down as I did with the Windex.

Chip, the most likely source of problems is your clutch hydraulic line.
If
your car still has the polymer line, you should replace it with the
stainless
steel line. This will save a lot of wear and tear on your tranny, and
keep
you from looking like a clutz. A good DeLorean mechanic can do this job
in a few hours.
If you have already replaced the line, then this could also be a symptom
of a worn out master cylinder or slave cylinder in your clutch system.
New ones are not too expensive. You might want to have yours tested
just to be sure.

I remember thinking when you posted the original message that it is
probably just a five speed with transmission problems. Maybe the seller
of this car is Bill Gates, and he reclassified all its faults as
"features."
Perhaps this DeLorean also comes with "Sporty, low hanging doors" and
"Customized leather seats featuring random slit pattern" and "High tech
Ducillier power regulation system to limit electrical consumption."
Seriously, I have often mused that it should be easy to put the
transmission from an Eagle Premier into a DeLorean. That would give
you a very reliable automatic four speed with overdrive. I have no idea
if
this was done to the car in question. Maybe?

I have recevied a couple of new shirt design submissions, but
unfortunately they used images which had been "lifted" from other sites
on the internet. I would think that most people would realize this was a
"no-no" for obvious reasons. So...here are the (revised) design
specifications:
1 color breast or short sleeve imprint (MAXIMUM 3 inches wide x 2 inches
tall)
Up to 4 color back (MAXIMUM 11 inches wide by 14 inches tall)
Line drawing or halftone/four color process (DO NOT use images lifted
from the internet unless you can supply written permission from the
original owner of the image their authorization to use it for this
purpose)
Preferred in digital format, at least 150dpi resolution for raster or
continous tone art.
Must show these items:
1) DeLorean sports car
2) the text "DeLorean Mailing List"
3) the text "www.dmcnews.com"
4) the text "Keeping the Dream Alive'
Deadline for entries in September 15, 1998. Send a LOW-RES (72dpi, GIF or

Chip, Check and see if you have the steel braided clutch line, if it is
the plastic one, then replace it.

I'm glad to see that someon else has discovered the windex approach to
cleaning. Whenever I wash my D, I remove most of the water on it so that
it won't spot, but I don't make any attempt to get it completely dry.
Then
I go over it with Windex - or a comparable product - and dry it with
paper
towels. The results are far superior to simply washing it.
I suspect that part of what you are removing with the Windex is any
residual soap or detergent. Having cleaned your D wthis way, always keep
the Windex and paper towels in the trunk to quickly and easily remove
fingerprints or other spots that may appear.

Subject: DML: Rear Axle CV boots
I don't recall seing anything posted on this - has anyone replaced the
rear axle CV joint boots? Not on my car, but someone in the area has the
two outer boots starting to split.
It looks like it should be relatively simple, but the parts manual only
lists a replacement of the whole axle and $500+ each. I suspect that the
factory thinking has the boots and the CV joints wearing out at the same
time, but most of these cars have mor age than miles on them leading to
splitting of the rubber boots from age.

Subject: DML: DML Luggage Rack Installation
Greetings
I finally got the nerve to take a drill to my car and install the
luggage rack I bought when I was back at the Cincinnati show. I think
the instructions that came with the rack are junk. Now I have an 82
car so perhaps it's just that there was a lot of changes between the
81's and the 82's but the template on the instructions doesn't match
my car in the least. It calls to align the template with the mounting
rivets for the louver struts, which there are none. And if the
template is aligned with the holes in the edges of the strut mounts
the rack ends up 3/4 inch too far up on the car and the lovuers would
jam against the rack mounts. So has anyone else ran into this? I was
able to properly mount the rack. It's a great addition and I really
reccomend getting one.
So before I finish the installation I also wonder if anyone has come
up with a clever way to reinstall the rubber stops in such a way as
to hide the luggage rack clips.. like the drawing shows. If you were
to cut the stops like the drawing, the clips wouldn't lock into place
to install the rack. The only way I've seen it done is to cut the
stop into sections around the mounts.

Hi all-->
I have an original Craig radio in my car. Even thought it sounds
like a tin can I'm into keeping things original. Unfortunalty it won't
remember what station it was on or any of the presets after you've turned
the engin off. The wiring diagram shows that two power lines are
connected to it: one that is hooked to the ignition switch and the other
is hooked straight to the power supply all the time via an inline fuse. I
suspected that the fuse had blown and the absense of constant power to the
radio was the problem (sounds logical, doesn't it? :P ) Well, when I got
the radio out there was a little pink wire with a connection on it that
looked like it might accept a small fuse. But when I looked in the hole
in the console I couldn't find a corresponding wire/connection. (This
obviously would result in the same symptom.) So I'm
wondering should the wire I'm looking fore be part of the same tap off the
main wire bundle that the radio's wire harness is part of or should it be
somewhere else? The exploded parts diagram doesn't seem to get down to
this level of detail. I've looked all over in there but I can't seem to
find it so I'm hoping someone knows the general area of where it should be
located so I don't have to pull the whole console out. Thanks a bunch. :)

In this great city of NY they should have everything. I have searched and
searched for a key blank for the DeLorean and I could not find one. I

happen to walk into a community hardware store near Chinatown where I

cars (I wanted to harass them for fun of it, foolish that I am), guess
what?
They had it, and more. More you may ask??? They also got me key blanks
for
my Bentley (or Rolls Royce), which is non existing. They are only
available
from the RROC or the manufacturers-distributors at a "cheap" price of an
arm
and a half of a leg -- key blanks $15.00. From this local distributor?
$2.75
plus a little "handy" scoring to make the relief bigger on the blank to
fit RR
standard cylinders as designed by the Yale lock company (they had to be
different to get their prices).
Now I humble myself one more time. Don't under estimate the "little"
stores.
I should know better, that is how I use to build up my other businesses.
Store the unusual items and go out of the way to get the customers what
they
needed as long it is available from a supply source.

Speedometer; You either have a loose dust shield (plastic cap that your
angle drive plugs into) or a binding angle drive.
Tach: You either have a bad tach feed wire or the gauge is N.G.
Fuel Gauge: You have a defective tank sender, replace it with the

from P.J. Grady.
Oil Pressure: This gauge acts erratically in most DeLoreans.

Yes, the GM Delco 100 amp # 7295-12 (Cadallic late 80's) will fit with the
addition of a longer adjusting arm or universal type. No wiring
modification is required just cut off the existing Ducillier connector and
only use the brown/yellow wire to B+, cut the brown wire back and cap or
tape it. Neither the Delco nor the Motorola use the brown wire.

Fuses melting in your cooling fan circuit is not unusual, the cooling fans
draw a lot of current, any loose or dirty connection will cause melting in
this circuit. Before you purchase another fan motor be sure that your
current one is actually bad. If you need to purchase a replacement get one
from one of our DeLorean part suppliers. If you take this route let me
know
and I'll tell the easiest way to make the change.

First check all of your fuses, once you have done that slide under the car
and check the name on the alternator, if it says Ducillier get rid of it
and replace it with a Motorola or Delco. A more accurate test is to get a
hold of a voltmeter and connect it between your battery terminals or
between the "jump start post" and ground, the reading with the engine off
will be around 12V. Start the engine, the voltage should read between 13
and 14V, if the voltage drops your alternator is probably N.G.

Ken, I had the same problem mounting my rack on my Aug 1981 car. There
were no rivets. I assembled the rack and set it on the car in the
approximate location. Marked and drilled the body. I also pieced the
weatherstrip around the clips. The clips do not have to "snap" into
place, the rack will hold them when fastened. I agree, the instructions
are a bit nebulus.
