Hi,
I use a product that 'Mother's' makes called "Back to Black".  Aside from
the
smell (cherry soda?) and the fact that it doesn't last very long, it looks
great on all of the black paint and black chrome on the car.  I get it at
Pep
Boys, but it must be available a most auto-chain stores.

Yesterday, my friend Duke drove his DeLorean over to my house.  On the
way over, it over heated.  It was typical Mobile Alabama weather, 95F+
and high humidity.  His gauge hit 220 and the fans came on at 185.  We
connected a hose from the bleed screw and put the other end in the
header bottle.  We had air bleeding for about 30 minutes.  We did notice
that the heater bleed hose did not have water flowing into the header
bottle.  The heater valve is suppose to be open at all times except when
the AC is in the max position.  Unfortunatly, the heater valve is
located below the distributor, so we can not see it.  Has anyone had
problems with there heater valve or had to replace it?  Did you have to
pull the intake manifold?  I think that there may be some air still
traped because of the closed valve, or perhapes the heater bleed line is
plugged.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Just inspect the frame (or have it inspected) on a regular basis.  Patch
it as needed.

I think I would have to be pretty desperate before I purchase the
PermaFrame simply because it has not been crash tested.  From what I
understand, Not to may of those frames have been sold as of yet.  I
guess this is due to the price.

I wonder what their liability is on something like that?  If Pearce
Design is serious about selling those things, I'd like to see some crash
test results.  On the other hand, you would have to wreck a dozen or so
Deloreans to do that.....  That would really suck!

The trick may be to re-coat your entire frame before you have a
problem..  Someone on the list used Rhino Lining to do this??  How'd
that car come out?

If its EXTREMELY loud, check to make sure that the Lamda probe is firmly
attached.  (located on the exhaust pipe just before the cat) When I had
my cat
gutted, they left this off completely (by accident) and it was LOUD!

Save yourself a lot of cursing and remove the anti sway bar brackets which
will allow the sway bar to drop allowing a lot more room to remove your
radiator assembly. Also, be cautious with the soft brass refrigerant hose
connections at the condenser.

I may have somewhat of an easier fix for this problem.  My washer pump
went
out years ago but I just decided to fix it this past weekend.  (thanks to
Scott Muller who got me on 'fix everything on the car' kick!!)   I bought
a
universal washer pump from AutoZone for around $11.00.  I removed the
container to gain acces to the washer bottle and motor.  I removed the
water
line from the stock washer motor and connected this line to the 'out' of
the
universal washer motor.  I then connected one end of a hose (that came
with
the kit) to the 'in' of the universal washer motor and then connected the
other in to the nipple of the stock washer motor.  This sucks the water
from
the bottle and feeds it through the new universal motor and it works
GREAT!!!!!

Hello everyone,

I brought my Delorean to Delorean Motor Center in May. It was about time
for
piece of mind, so I had about $7000 worth of preventive work done. I use
my
car as an everyday driver, and can't afford to be without it. Included in
my
long line of upgrades and replacements was an array of hoses, and a water
pump. Also, I had Don Steiger repaint the trim. Well, I went back to DMC a
week later, to have some touch-up work done on the paint, and when I
picked up
my car the next week, on my way home, was waved over by half of the
traffic on
interstate 91 in California. I stepped out of the car to the immediate
smell
of coolant (fresh coolant too). I looked closer, and sadly, it was the new
water pump, and could only be a bad bearing. Beyond my realm of freeway
fixing.
     It was late at night, and I was in corona, Ca with a homeless man
helping
me to diagnose the problem (?). After a long search trying to find the
right 7
digits, I called Don who was kind enough to ask me to spend the night at
his
house. I had the car towed there, and watched some movies with Don,
peanuts
and beer served to me. Then, In the morning, Don's daughter woke me up,
and on
that note, we loaded the car with coolant, drove to the shop, and Don
fixed
her. Better, he fixed #5252 on a Saturday,replaced the water pump with a
new
one at no charge, fixed my o-rings for free,and even cooked me breakfast
(perahps the one benefit I should have turned down). I cannot say how
impressed I was. Don went out of his way without doubt, to help me during
a
difficult time. I cannot express my gratitude enough.

Is there any way to fix cracks/rips in the plastic part of the DMC's
nose (around the headlights)?  Is there such a polymer/expoxy that can

Darrin,
First, the facia around the headlights is not fiberglass.
Second, yes there is a very good patch material.  As
recommended in the DeLorean service notes, 3M 8101
Construction Adhesive works great.  The only drawback is
that it sets within about a minute of mixing so you have to
work real fast.  Once you've patched & sanded & repainted
you'll never see the difference.  I just refinished the
front facia on mine & used this stuff to patch the rips.

My bushing gave out about a year ago. 
Get a replacement from PJ Grady (about $25 for a nylon replacement) and
you
will have to pull the steering column.  If you don't have the Factory
Parts
book, get it or look at the PDF files from the DMC newslist page.
It will take about half a day to pull the column and replace the bushing.

Thanks for the reply.  I had PJ Grady at different times bleed the air
from
the cooling system several times.  Replacing all hoses -- first.  Changing
thermostat -- second.  Changing the reservoir plastic to stainless steel
third.  Last time bleeding when the radiator was changed -- the fourth.  I
don't think air was my problem.  I think the larger metal brass radiator
has
resolved the overheating.  I will find out in the next few days to follow.
The weather is promised to be hot all this week in NYC area, this should
be
interesting.  This will put the metal brass radiator to test again.

The alternator that I have is the Motorola unit.
I just had a new Optima battery installed 4 weeks ago.  This Optima
Battery
replaced a Delco Freedom Maintenance Free 60 Months Battery that is 30
months
old.  I must admitted, a big difference between the two batteries in
performance and behavior.  The characteristics of the alternator is still
there.  It is still weak and slow in charging the new Optima battery too.
 The
new battery is better not because it is new, it is just that much better
as
new technology is concern.  Its performance show the battery's ability. 
It
lasts twice as long in "crawling" traffic, the alternator recharges it in
1/4
of time it took to charge the Delco battery.

I do know the Delco battery line in behavior and characteristics for I
have
used and SOLD the GM Delco Batteries line for over 10 years when use to
retail
and wholesale automotive parts.  Anyway, again a big difference, the
Optima is
well worth the investment.

Scott,
You have incorrectly bleed the system, you must have pressure in the
coolant lines in order to push out the excess air. Your air bleed hose
must
go to a separate container at ground level and the system sealed i.e.:
header tank cap on and sealed with positive pressure in the system. This
is
accomplished by using a coolant pressure tester or running the engine
until
the temperature gauge just reaches the second white line on your
temperature gauge. The air bleed hose connected to your header tank is
actually connected to the top of your radiator and not to the hot water
valve. The hot water valves
have a zero failure rate, therefore I don't think you need to consider a
replacement. If you look in the engine compartment just behind the left
valve cover you should be able to see it. Be sure that a thin plastic
vacuum line is connected to it.

the DeLorean Owners Association Expo '98 in Los Angeles, CA. Dates are
Sept.3-6, 1998.

Many exciting events are planned; Technical Seminar sponsored by P.J.
Grady, tour and dinner at the Petersen Automotive Museum sponsored by De
Lorean Motor Company, and Concours DeLorean One. Other choices offered
include L.A. city tour, tour of movie star's homes, brunch at the L.A.
County Arboretum, gala Saturday Banquet, and a Mexican Fiesta Buffet.
Another special tour planned for Friday morning is a visit to the new
Getty
Center. This has been the hottest ticket in L.A. since the Center opened

The DMC limited edition Model BBS is up and running for it's
first week end. Thanks for the messages and the feed back. The few
problems that appeared are fixed and access is now even faster. If you

        I would like to take this opportunity to than ken Montgomery for sending
me the VHS tape of the DMC show! It was just great. I can tell right now
by the tape that my DMC is not in close to show condition. I thought I
was a clean car owner, but after seeing the "D"s at the show, well I will
just stick to driving around. I really was impressed by the painted "D"s
and the custom jobs. I loved the BTTF project, really nice work, the
night shots were exceptional, just a bit of mist coming from the green
lights was all it needed. The show work shops, and the warehouse really
filled out the tape. I love the cutaway "D"! "I wanna Browse the
warehouse"!!!! Seeing so many "D"s out on the road must have shocked many
a driver, Well although I was unable to be there I think I can honestly
say that every one who worked on the show and all the "D" owners that
showed up puts the reason why we own and drive these cars in proper
perspective.

James-the best product to use on the dash is Lexol Vinylex.  You can use
it
on plastic, rubber, and vinyl, but NOT leather.  Lexol makes an excellent
Leather Cleaner and Conditioner for this purpose.  Avoid Armor All (and
any
products that contain silicon) like the plague.  Not only will it
eventually
turn the dash brown, it leaves a shiny, greasy finish that I do not care
for.  In addition, if you ever stop using it, your dash will dry out and
crack soon after.  The Vinylex has UV protectants to prevent dash
cracking
and discoloration.

Yugoman-as above, no silicon!  I am not familiar with the product that
you
mentioned, but in my experience, the best black trim product to use is
Black
Again.  It gives the rubber a jet-black look, contains UV protectants,
and
is also "activated" by the sunlight.  The only problem with it is that it
doesn't last as long as it probably should, so I top coat it with
Meguiars
#42 rubber protectant.  This stuff is one of the longest lasting black
trim
products out there.

offer.  I found out about these guys almost by accident, and afterwards
"got

Pete from what i can gather British Customs and Excise regard the Value of
a Delorean as =A313,000
so you will be required to pay VAT and customs duty equivilant to 32.5% of
that figure including the shipping.
I understand that shipping is a further $1000 approx.
There are some rules if you are shifting your place of residence from the
US to UK where by you are allowed to import your vehicle however i believe
that you have to prove that the veichle has been in your ownership for
some
time.. ( you cant ship a brand new car at least  without penalties). There
is one guy from the UK who has shipped a car from the US he runs the DOA
of
the UK. Martin on the following email address will put you in contact

Im just leaving mine in Arizona the atmosphere is dry there and well i

How'ya Peter,

I am looking into shipping costs myself at present. Will take my '81
DeLorean back to N.Ireland via England in October, 1998. Have contacted
a roll-on, roll-off car transportation company called 'RoRo'
<roro@xxxxxxxx> who sail out of a number of East coast ports including
NewYork, Baltimore, Charleston, Brunswick ... They quote US$550 for a
car up to 400cft (DMC 370cft?). They will take my toy to Liverpool but
also sail into Southampton. Have heard bad reports about these non
containerised shippers though ..... any comments, experiences from the
rest?

We can really appreciate what Ken had done with the show in Cincinnati!

$30 registration fee..  Register for what?  For the privilege to pay for
all the other stuff?!

$44.50 each for dinner... Not terrible, but a bit high.

$14.50 each for tech seminar by PJ Grady.  I hope most of this money is
going to Rob!  I don't think Rob should be doing any charity work for
the DOA.  Why should they profit from him?!

$4.00 for the privilege to purchase Delorean products at the Product
fair?  This has got to take the cake!! I am sure the DOA will also be
charging the vendors.  Making money on both ends, eh?? 

$20.00 for a tee-shirt?!  Cummon! Isn't ANYTHING included in the $30
registration fee?

It would cost about $800 (not including travel expenses) for a companion
and I to attend the DOA expo and get basically the same "stuff" we got
in Cincinnati for about $300.  This does not include any of the tourist
attractions that are optional such as universal studios, ect.

This again goes to show me that the DOA is in business to make money.  I
would expect this kind of price list from a commercial operation, not a
organization by owners for owners.  The URL should be

To the DOA board members that may be reading this:  If you are sitting
there saying "We don't need him, Who cares what he thinks" Well, That is
what I would expect.  If the DOA was really trying to do all the things
a car club is supposed to do, this would not be the case.  You are
entitled to run your organization as you wish, but please do not try to
present yourself as a "Association", "Organization", or "Club".  You are
a Business for profit!

The situation is just so frustrating!  Thanks to people like James and
Ken, we can participate in affordable and reasonable Delorean
activities.

I had a great time in Cincinnati.  Looks like I am going to have to wait
until June 2000!

Kayo,
Order yourself a cooling system pressure tester available at some auto
parts dealers or JC Whitney for around $100. It will enable you to quickly
bleed air out of your system without even starting your engine and can
also
detect any leaks. Considering the unique trapped air problem with the
DeLorean cooling system this item should have been included with the jack.
Tell me more about the Optima battery i.e.: who is the manufacturer and
where are they available, sounds like a winner!

    Three owners from Alabama have already stated that they would like

wants to attend.  There is also an enthusiast who lives in Biloxi that

This is one part of Marc's post with which I readily agree.  I have seen
Ken Koncelik at work negotiating for the Cleveland 2000 Car Show, and I
can tell you Ken is *merciless* at squeezing low prices out of his sites!

Convention facilities (like a room to hold a Products Fair or tech
seminar)
cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, and it is not unusual for a
convention to charge admission to cover the cost of the room and
incidentals.  The professional engineering conventions I have attended
have charged similar $5 - $20 fees for each technical seminar,  vendor's
room, Tshirt, etc..

I wouldn't be so quick to demonize the DOA, which is just charging
prices that are typical for conventions at this type of facility. 
Instead I
would be praising Ken for his extraordinary efforts in shopping around
and negotiating deals to keep the price I pay as low as possible.

Also, some people prefer a more luxurious hotel at a more exotic
location.  My wife still raves about the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, and
she can't wait to get to the Hilton in Los Angeles.

We'll see you there!

Over the past 30 years I have ordered many things from JC Whitney and
have been
satisfied with almost everything that I've received.  The catalogue does
have a
lot of junk, but unless you order a magnetic fuel ionizer, or a cold
fusion
atomizer, or other "county fair" products, you won't be disappointed. 
They are
one of the few sources for a lot of hard to find items.  Their tools are
not
Snap-On quality, nor is the price.  The odd angle wrenches are K-Mart
quality
but they are adequate for once a month use.

This is surprising.  I got my pressure tester from my neighborhood
Murray's Autoparts store for about $79.00.  It was right off the shelf in
aisle one.  I believe the manufacturer is Stant.

It comes with adaptors for various vehicles, but you do not need any of
them for the DeLorean.  It is not the sturdiest unit in the world, but it
is
quite adequate for home use.  Not only do I use it to bleed & check my the
cooling systems in all my cars, I also use it to pressure check the
radiator
caps on all my cars.

Subject: DML: New horns are working finally!

In my quest to fix every freakin' thing on this car (once again, thanks
Scott!) I just finished with my horn problem.  For those of you
interested, my horns would not work, so I went to my local AutoZone and
bought some replacement horns.  (Something with a little more pep)
These were also 12 volt horns.  However, a strange problem arose.  (a
strange problem on a DeLorean....imagine that!)  When I have only one of
the horns hooked up, it would work; when I have both horns hooked up,
all I would get is a 'clicking' noise from them.  With a little help
from my arch nemesis yet mentor Scott Muller, we came to the conclusion
that there wasn't enough voltage getting to the horns.   Yesterday I set
out to fix this little problem and succeeded. (??)  I found the wire
that runs from the horn switch on the steering column to the horns
themselves.  I cut the wire and ran  a line from the positive terminal
of the battery and touched them together; both horns worked fine!??!!  I
then found the wire that was supplying the power to the horn switch and
cut it.  I connected the wire from the positive terminal to it and then
hit the switch and they worked fine.   Somehow I wasn't getting enough
power from the 'stock' source.  Here's another strange thing, no matter
what constant wire I used, (other than the battery itself) all I would
get is the 'clicking' sound.  I've decided to run a wire from the
positive terminal and, using a inline fuse, connect this to the wire for
the horn switch.

Several months ago I posed an inquiry  if the DeLorean would possibly pass
an emissions test without the cat converter. The replies I received back
were not from actual tests so I recently took my car with the hollow
(without catalyst) converter to get tested. It failed. I put a new cat on
it and it passed with almost no hydrocarbons or carbonmonoxide. The
following are the results with the  without / with and (state standards).
Hydrocarbons ppm  926 / 8  (220)Carbonmonoxide % 0.35 / 0.02  (1.20)   ,
Carbonmonoxide+Carbondioxide  10.25 / 13.14 (>6.00 higher better in this
case) .

In summary the car does need the cat to pass Illinois tailpipe test
however
I can tell you after driving  the car without the cat it  does run better
without the backpressure Butttttttt a reduction in emissions of this
magnitude is impressive and important to the environment! No other changes
were made between tests. The CO was low on the first test because I
"leaned" the mixture  but kept it the same setting for the second test.
