Subject: DML: Last Call Delorean Car Show
HI
Its getting near the deadline for the DeLortean Car Show and with the
response
so far it looks like it will be well attended and there will be
representation
from many states and Clubs. we have some unusual deLoreans too like one
with
a stainless steel frame and a DeLorean time Machine along with various
other
custom DeLoreans. There are about 6 cars entered for the concourse and
everyone else appeared to enter the daily driver catagories so this will
make
it an interesting event.
Deadline is May 1st so there is one more week to get your registrations
in.
There have been a lot of calls lately along with quite a few registrations
from Ilinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Again thanks for your support

While working on my delorean "mouse car",
I have noticed so many differences between
it and later 81 and 82 cars. too many to list.
But, has anyone ever noticed the different
methods of installing the rear fixed quater panel
glass ? Seems that the 81 cars were just simply
glued in. 82 cars were installed using glue and
a finishing strip like the fixed door glass. Does
anyone have the Part # for this finisher strip ?
I like the 82 design better but it is not listed in
the parts book ? Sure, I could just call DMC
Houston and ask, but I like to act like I know
what I'm talking about when I call <g>

Subject: DML: MSD and other problems
My 1200 mile trip from Austin, TX, to Chicago, went well after having
numerous repairs done by DMC Houston, but my car wasn't too happy after
making the pilgrimage. It died at the local mall one night after
arriving.
It started fine, and then just died about 10 seconds after running. I
eventually had it towed to a local mechanic who works on DeLoreans. I
made
a mistake in saying that it wasn't my daily driver, so three weeks later
they are still not really putting a lot of time into my car. I have
finally had enough and gotten more nasty and now they are working on it a
bit more. I won't say their name yet because I'll have to say is bad
things about them right now and hopefully when the work is all done I can
at least comment unbiased upon their actual work/price. I don't know a
lot
about car repair and even less about the DeLorean so some of the stuff I'm
about to say may not make perfect sense.
The mechanic found the harness burnt through from the coil to distributor
and replaced that, but it still didn't work. He then replaced the ECU and
he's now getting signal, but it drops off drastically after a few seconds.
After a week of not messing with the car, he finally went in there and
replaced the ECU with something called a MSD unit and the car worked great
after that. He said the second ECU was bad, which is hard for me to
believe, but oh well. He said the car is running great with the MSD unit
so I just asked him to put that into the car. Is that bad? What is a MSD
unit and is it OK to replace my current unit with that? It's cheaper and
a
GTO friend of mine said it's a more reliable unit. I don't care much
about
originality in the car as long as it's reliable, so that's not an issue.
Sadly, I also have a fuel leak coming from my fuel pump area and now I
have
a gigantic puddle of auto transmission fluid underneath my car too. This
car is sucking money fast! I hope it gets healthy soon as I'm out over
$10,000 in repairs over 2 months :(. DMC Houston did fuel tank work and
they serviced my auto-transmission, so I'm not sure if any of the leaks
are
involved with their work, but I'm going to wait until I find out what's
wrong 100% before talking with them. I assume that I really have no
reason
to complain since the car made 1200 miles without a hitch. Overall, DMC
Houston did really good work. There were a few problems with what I had
done like a new dented Binnacle and other small things like that, but they
were understanding and are going to make the fixes when I visit in Ohio in
June.
Anyway, if anyone can enlighten me about what a MSD unit is and if it's OK
to put into the DeLorean I'll be quite grateful!
Thanks.

MSD stands for Multiple Spark Discharge (I think) and what that means is
it
generates several sparks (across the plugs) throughout several degrees of
engine revolution, theoretically burning a better percentage of the fuel
mixture every combustion cycle. I think MSD units include a variable
ignition coil that provides a hotter spark when the mixture is richer,
which
is supposed to increase performance as well. They also sell special plug
wires.
I've never used an MSD, but I know a few people that have, and they speak
positively about it. I have considered trying a combination of MSD and
"rapid-fire" spark plugs on my D. I'd use the rapid-fire rather than the
"split-fire", as I've heard that split-fires have a tendency to break
apart
in the cylinder, whereas the electrode on the rapid fires are made from 1
conductor, with "nubs" coming off the sides. Same principal.
I know there was some discussion on the split-fires, and my father noted
that when he put rapid-fires in his '77 mustang, the idle speed RPMs
increased about by 150, which tells me something about efficiency.
I'd be curious as to what model MSD your mechanic installs, and also about
other people's opinions about this configuration.

Delorean owners and friends,
Paint: I am going to paint the louvers, plastic trim, and windshield
framing
next month. Does anyone know if i have to use a primer/sealer for the
plastic
bits like the louvers and trim? Also, what paint will match the wheels,
trim
(flat, semi-gloss, gloss) and maufacturer?
Springs: I read in Hemmings that Eaton has the blueprints for several
car's
springs (custom). Does this include the Delorean? And I know PJ Grady
sells
front springs that are lower than stock. If I took Rob's springs and put
them
in the front and took stock springs and put them in the rear, how close
would
this be to the original lowering height the car was intended to be? Last
but
not least...
My favorite DMC parts supplier sent me some floor mats. These however,
had no
backing and slide under my heels each time I drive. In addition, they are
flat, and cheap feeling. Who sells a mat like the original?

Here'a a thought to all that own the book titled "DELOREAN Gold
Portfolio." While moving stuff out of my Grandmothers house after my
Grandfather died in '96 I came across some old car magazines from the
70's and 80's I found the articles on the D in Road & Track, and Motor
Trend, but I also found 2 Popular Science magazines that had articles
from '81 and '82 that are not included in the Gold Portfolio (Jul '81
& Mar '82 to be exact)they had a fairly good size articles on the car
in both issues and this made me think, "I wonder if there is any more
articles out there ('77-'95) that were not included in this book?" if
anyone has found any others, will a Third issue of the 'DGP' be
produced that includes these missing articles? From the index in my
book it looks as to only 2 or 3 articles were added for the 2nd run
(1995 book), or might this next version contain articles on the new
cars to be introduced (would they still be DeLoreans?).Any insight on
this subject would be appreciated.

John, are you talking exclusively about articles written in English
(British
and American press) or also rest of the world press? On this subject I
know
of at least two articles that were written in a French magazine called
'Auto
Retro'. One of the articles dates from 1981 from when the Delorean had
just
been released. The second article is from January 1994.
The Gold Portfolio series deals exclusively with British and American
press,
thus neither of these two articles is featured. I'm certain that other
articles exist in other countries that relate to the man, business or car.
No matter how good a research is done by the Gold Portfolio team there is
NO
way thay can possibly track down every single article on this extensive
subject.

After cleaning the Stainless using the "Scotch Brite" and/or washing it,
you can wipe it down with Paint thinner or any other low volitility
solvent. These solvents leave an oily residue which acts as a dust
magnet. Boy does it shine though. I have been told by another list
member that he uses armor all. When I was at Expo 97 in Ireland, one of
the guys that had his car there said he used furniture polish, something
like Lemon Pledge. Personaly, I just wash the car using a solution of
"409", 1 cup to one gallon of water. Rinse and dry. When I am at the
car shows, I use "Windex" to wipe the finger prints off.
I'm curious to what other people use?

Hi Brandon,
I don't know how that is done after the card comes from the factory,
marking the hinge bolt position very carefully would be a good place to
start. There are two things I am sure of.
1. That it takes two guys to do the door torque rod, and the doors at the
factory were put on first, then the body panels aligned to match the
doors,
or at least two of the books I have claim.
You might try one of the BIG 4 and ask for advice?

I have this same tape, but think I might have some information that can
help.
In part the shine is from the studio lights, but most of it is from the
way in which the care was prepared. I have been experimenting with various
ways to both clean and maintain the stainless finish.
There are I would say three steps or phases in getting the studio finish.
Clean the stainless with stainless cleaner. Only apply and remove the
cleaner "with the grain"
Re-burnish the stainless with the correct size scotch bright pads and
Stainless cleaner. It will take at least 8 hours per panel and you will
have to use a pressure block and may have to use alinement jigs.
Use very hard past wax applied in small "with the grain" patched from
one
end of the panel to the other, followed by a very high luster car wax like
turtle. Do not use a circular buffing machine at any stage. You can get
the
stainless to shine enough to make people squint if the sun angle is just
right.

Hi Dave,
PJ Grady has three lowering kits that use "New mfg" springs that provide
for several "lowering configurations". They are 1", 1 1/4" and 1 3/4"
lowering configurations. But you also have another option. because the
space "clearance" around the rear wheel and the fender edge is about
even,
if you want a sleeker appearance at half the cost and keep "most" of your
ground clearance you can get just the front 1 1/4" springs. This will even
out the clearance around the front wheels, drop the nose of the D just
enough to take the looseness out of 90+mph driving and once you get the
front realigned (with full tank of gas), greatly improve the handling of
the D. The front spring kit cost $125 a pair.
There is no cutting of springs, no front to back stuff, these are new
springs and when installed provide the right flexing independent
suspension
with a different body to ground relationship with out any negative impact
on the original design considerations.
note: for the very first time I got a part from PJ's that was defective.
I
called about the problem. A replacement was sent with out question, that
arrived 3 days later. This is the second major DMC parts supply company
that has given me this great service. So far both DeLorean-ONE and PJ
Grady have
been right on the mark on tech help and parts. I should point out that so
far both have been very forth right about parts availability, and don't
seam to object that I source else where when they did not have a part.

To all DML members:
Well this weekend past my wife gave me a week end at the Hot tub bed and
breakfast on the pacific Coast up in Mendacino (where you can see the
whales swim by). Of course we drove up to this coastal whale watching spot
in our "D".
We stopped at the place we were staying Friday and Saturday to check
in.
When I went out to move the D to our parking spot, "IT would not start!"
and it did not start after cooling down, and it did not start the next
morning, and it would not start in the local gas station repair shop,. But
the battery cranked and cranked and cranked.
My D has a brand new fuel pump from PJ Grady which runs like a champ, but
no power appears at the connector that the pump hooks into? A bit of gas
in
the air intake would get a rumble out of the engine but even never enough
to get a solid start. This was the first time in a year that my D would
not
start hot or cold?
Fortunately a former employer who owned a near by gas station and the AAA
towing service had a flat bed transporter, so this morning bright and
early, my D was loaded on the transporter and brought home 100 miles plus.
At least on the huge transport truck, bystanders could not tell my D was
busted!!! Getting towed backwards behind a 1 1/2 would have really been
bad!
Looks like I have Bosh-K Jetronic home work to do! suggestions are
welcome.....I know a little about fuel accumulator and cold start
switches,
I have the manuals to read. Once upon a time a long, long, long, time ago
I
used to work doing both aircraft and diesel repairs, so I'm e not flat
mechanically stupid, but it's been a good 20 years sense I did any work,
well that is up until last April (1year ago) when I got my D. Up until
this
week end.

I got a copy of the Bloomberg magazine today (March 1998 Vol 7 No 3),
and opened it right to the Delorean article, like the magazine knew what
I was looking for!
The article is 4 pages, with 3 shots of the car, and 1 shot of JZD.
Very positive artile talking about the quality, and investment potential
of the car.
Lines like "...Yet from the tangle a nearly perfect dricing machine
emerged."
For those of you, that are looking for the value of the DMC to go up,
you will like "...with lots of miles accrued and still commanding
$20,000-$40,000. And those prices are going up."
It seems like the author did a bit of research for the article, so I
wonder where he got those numbers from!
Either way, the magazine is free for the asking, just call Bloomberg
magazine in Princeton NJ.

Lee, How do you get the paste wax out of the grain? I once tried using
a wax like product and could not polish the residue out of the grain, I
had to use solvent and buff the panels with the course "scotch brite" to
remove the wax residue.

I don't think this is a Bosch K-Jet problem at all. This feels like a
Lucas
electrical problem, and probably a simple one. My first suspicion would
be the fuel pump relay. It might also be the safety timing circuit which
deactivates the fuel pump if you crank the engine for more than a few
seconds without starting.
First you must be absolutely sure that the fuel pump is getting no power.
Due to the above safety circuit, you cannot just turn the key, then walk
over to the fuel pump with your electronic multimeter. You should have
someone else in the driver's seat turning the key when you check for
fuel pump power, because it will cut out in a few seconds if the engine
hasn't started.
I suggest you check for power that way, working backwards from the
fuel pump. I bet you can track down the faulty electrical component in
less than an hour.
Good luck.

For information about DeLorean values, I suggest you consult Knut
Grimsrud's excellent research article on the subject. You can find it in
the latest DeLorean Club of Oregon Newsletter, which is available for
free online at:
www.dmcnews.com
The DeLorean Club of Oregon is listed under "Clubs."
I suspect that you got a pretty good deal, especially if your barter
allowed you to avoid paying sales taxes. Make sure to read the back
issues of the DML to learn about the dangers of driving a DeLorean that
has been in storage (old gas can make rubber parts in fuel system
degrade and ruin the fuel injector).
> I would like a good source for parts.
Go to the DeLorean Owner's Association website at:
www.delorean-owners.org
Look under "Marketplace" then "Advertisers." This will give you a list of
reputable DeLorean parts suppliers and the ways to contact them. DMC
Houston and DeLorean One also have their own web pages.
Good luck and congratulations on your DeLorean acquisition!

Lee,
A quick look at the wiring diagram shows that the Inertia Switch is in a
direct line with the fuel pump. See if it needs to be reset. If it
does not need to be reset see if there is power going to it. If power
is going to it and the pump does not work then the Inertia Switch is
defective. A quick jumper to ground will confirm this.

The first thing to try. Remove the cover behind the drivers seat and
check the plugs to the boxes ( computers ). Take them all out and
plug them back in, make sure you get them all. Try starting, bet it
works now.
I had one that did this same thing. Two hours next to the road trying
everything before I discovered this.
Still waiting for my stuff.

Subject: DML: DeLorean Starting Delay?
Sometimes when I turn the key to start my DeLorean it pauses a second
or two before starting. This seems to be directly related to the charge
in
the battery. That is, when the batery has a good charge the car starts
cranking immediately, but when I let the battery run down (by leaving the
doors open for a long time, or whatever) I get the time delay before it
will
crank.
My question is about those moments while I have the key turned and
nothing happens at first, then it cranks. Does anyone know what my car
is doing during that time? Is there some system in the DeLorean that puts
an extra load on the battery for the first few seconds, then returns to
normal?

I am very surprised that no dealer in Germany can help you. Cole is a
huge corporation that happens to have its headquarters in Cleveland.
Among other things they manufacture a lot of the world's key cutting
equipment. They also make eyeglasses (Cole Vision) and do engraving
(Things Remembered). Many locksmith shops and hardware stores
have Cole equipment.
I was not aware that Cole made a DeLorean key blank. If they do, then it
should be easy for anyone to get a DeLorean key made anywhere. If
they don't, then it means that a previous owner changed the locks on
your car.
Cole has a home page at:
http://www.colenational.com/corporation.html
I thought someone once said that a certain Volvo key blank could be
made into a DeLorean key. That information should be in the DML back
issues. The regular DeLorean parts suppliers should also be able to help
you.

The DeLorean engine is not a Volvo engine exactly. The crankcase and oil
pan are from the Renault Alpine and the Renault transaxle used in the
DeLorean was never used in the Volvo so the bell housing won't fit. Even
though the DeLorean oil pan might or might not fit the Volvo engine, I
don't think the motor mount lugs from the Alpine crank case are cast in
the
same position on the crankcase as the Volvo lugs. In short I rather doubt
the two are compatible.

Yes it is a major job, we used standard Volvo exhaust gaskets which fit
perfectly. You should start by soaking all the retaining nuts in
penetrating solvent, and cleaning the exposed threads with a wire brush.
You can do it from underneath, if you have a lift your life will get a lot
easier.

Hi Mike,
We did just as you suggested this afternoon. We found several things,
there was a split in the old fuel pick up line, (remember that I just put
in a new fuel pump last week. There was also a twist in the pick up line
that apparently tended to hold the split closed, and as long as the tank
was more than half full the split was not exposed. we found some "crud in
the tank" and that no power was getting to the pump at any time. We found
that it may be the safety cut out switch (now on it's way here by over
night UPS). The relay appears to work so we are now at new fuel pick up
line, and waiting for a parts............
