Rich, The watery black fluid may have done damage to the seals. You may need
to replace them.

Subject: [DML] Clutch behavior
About 2 years ago I replaced my clutch master & slave cylinders and
replaced the line with a stainless, braided one. I did this during
the summer and the pedal was drastically improved.
Since I hit the 2 year mark anyway, I flushed the system as David T.
likes to remind us and the fluid was absolutely black and when I
poured it into a disposal container it seemed...watery. Again, the
pedal has greatly improved.
