No - it is much narrower - especially when compared to two-door cars. I
used to know the exact distance it took to open the doors, but have
mislaid
that bit of trivia. It is in the neighborhood of 14" and I'm sure someone
will post the exact measurement.

No, I did not invent time travel, but a fellow lister named Marty got me
to
thinking. (no pun intended). There is an event each year here in Memphis
called "Memphis in May". It is a month long celebration which kicks off
with
the Beale Street Music Festival, which is a three day outdoor event held
down
on the riverfront, usually the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of May.
The
second weekend is the World Championship Bar-B-Q contest. The last
weekend is
the Sunset Symphony, performed by the Memphis Symphony. In between,
there is
tons of music, and fun.
This might be an opportunity, on a very casual basis, for quite a few of
us to
get together, that live too far away to participate in most DeLorean
events.
If there is an interest, I would be happy to arrange for a get together,
on
whatever scale you guys would like. If you've never been to Memphis, it
is
easy to get around, the Bar-B-Q is fabulous, the music is spectacular, and
dont forget Elvis. Yall let me know what you think!

No, actually the "wing span" is less than a conventional door. At full
height the doors stick out 4" and only require 12" total clearance to
open. Here's a short story: My friend parked his '86 'Vette next to our
DeLorean in our garage so we could work on his stereo system. Well,
space was tight, due to our lawn tractor and a few other things against
the right wall, so he was VERY close to the DeLorean. He couldn't get
out the driver's side of his 'Vette because he didn't have enough room
to open the doors far enough to get out. So, just for the heck of it, I
opened the DeLorean's passenger door just to see if it would clear. And
guess what? It did! I climbed in and out of it with ease, where my
friend had to crawl across to his passenger side to get out of his
Corvette!

Greg,
The white smoke on start up usually indicates excess un-burnt fuel in the
combustion chamber. This can usually be corrected by a CO mixture
adjustment. This would also cause a rough running condition. You are right
about the accumulator not being at fault.

You are correct, Lee is incorrect, and the workshop manual is not sure.
Actually the Workshop Manual has several incorrect statements. To update
your manual delete 10, & 13 at D:04:01, and 15 & 19 at D:04:02. The three
brass screws should be turned clockwise as far as they will go, they have
no function on the DeLorean.
FYI the three screws are there for pre 1980 Volvo's without an idle speed

We rent DeLoreans for all types of events, our minimum charge is $250.00
plus $25.00 per hour for a static display i.e.: not driven, no electric
(lights), and doors closed & locked.
If the client wants the doors open the charge is $35.00 per hour with a
stipulation that the client shall provide suitable barriers for crowd
control to keep spectators from entering the vehicle. We include a damage
waver and add travel and accommodations when the vehicle exceeds a minimum
distance from its home base.
Also be aware that if the car is brought indoors in a public building many
local codes require that the gas tank be empty and the battery
disconnected.

Sure, I'd be happy to give you some travel tips for Ohio, especially
Cleveland.
The Crawford Auto Museum is on University Circle, on the East Side. I
was there last week for a big soiree celebrating the Packard Centenial
and the VIN 500 DeLorean was temporarily not on display. Perhaps it
will be back out by Spring Break. Either way, the stainless 36 Ford and
the Stainless Lincoln Continental should both be on display.
DeLorean Cadillac, the dealership founded by JZD's brother Charles and
currently run by nephew Mark, is in Cleveland.
While in Cleveland you might enjoy the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a NASA
base with a free museum, and several other tourist type things. Perhaps
the feature you would most enjoy would be all the nightlife in The
Flats.
If your Spring Break is the same as mine then you might be in Cleveland
on Saturday, March 20. My wife and I are throwing a big party that
evening. If you (or any DMLers) will be in the area on that date
consider yourselves invited. Drop me a line and I will give you
directions.
As far as I know the Columbus warehouse only allows tours on special
occasions. You should contact DMC Houston if you want to see it.
Please contact me by private E-mail if you want to continue this
discussion.

I dont think that this is correct. Being cold weather outside
condensation will build up inside the exhaust system. This is normal for
all cars. When the car is started the exhaust system heats up causing
the condensation to turn into steam, white smoke. This sympton will stop
as all the condensation is depleted.
There are three colors of smoke that can come from the engine exhaust:
WHITE: water
BLUE: oil
BLACK: fuel

Subject: DML: Serious Brake Pull
I have owned my D for almost five years now and have a problem that no
one can
figure out. If anyone has had this problem or knows anything about this
problem or any ideas on how to correct it, I would be interested in what
they
have to say.
This is the situation:
When I apply my brakes, my D pulls to the right. Though my steering wheel
is
at dead center, the car drifts. I had my alignment checked by Rob Gradys
alignment shop and they corrected the alignment. I hoped that by properly
aligning the car, my brake pull would vanish. It didn't. Shortly after
that, I
brought my D back to Rob for other work (prior to the alignment, Rob did a
complete brake job, front and rear, along with new rotors, rebuilt
calipers,
master cylinder, etc..) I explained my situation to Rob and he decided to
check the calipers to see it they were hanging. He found no problems, but
decided to rebuild the calipers again. This didn't help. He then decided
to
check the brake lines. The passenger side line had collapsed! Both driver
and
passenger side lines were replaced (for continuity). This seemed to help,
but
it still pulled. After having my D lowered, Rob had it realigned. This
didn't
help, it still pulled. About 6,000 miles after the lowering, I brought it
back
to Rob. We had the car aligned again, since the car settled on its new
springs
and shocks. It still pulls. The alignment shop gave Rob all of my stats
on the
alignment. Rob went over them with me and he determined that my frame
geometry
is off. He mentioned something about having a frame pull done, but was
VERY
hesitant about offering that as a fix. Does anyone know what I can do to
correct my problem? It can be very dangerous in a panic stop, which I
have had
first hand experience in, countless times! I understand that a "crown" in
the
road can cause some pull, but am sure that my situation is beyond road
irregularities. Rob is almost 100% sure that my D hasn't been in an
accident,
so the frame isn't out of alignment from that. My D is an early '81,
built in
May, VIN 001292. Is it possible that the early frames were built
improperly?
Tire pressure is maintained at 25 front, 30 rear and I have the Yokohama
AVS
Intermediate tires (proper size). If anyone can help, PLEASE respond or
e-mail
me at jdsjlv@xxxxxxx Thanks in advance!

Subject: DML: Goodyear GT II
I was wondering if anyone has tried the Goodyear GT II tires on their
DeLorean. They can be special ordered from Wal-Mart, and the only
drawback is
that the rear tires have raised white letters, and the front tires do no
not,
however, the tread pattern is the same in either direction, therefore, the
rear tires could be mounted with the white letters to the inside. The
price
is sure right. Any thoughts?

Jeff,
Don't even bother, from day one Goodyear tires have never been the
performance choice for the DeLorean. BTW check out yesterday's post from
Sean Howley about the Yokahama's. Do your DeLorean and yourself a favor
and
get these tires

I believe a new DashMat for the "D" is under $50. you might want to spend

Subject: DML: RE: Serious Brake Pull
This might be a stupid question, but did you look at your steering rack? =
If that is fine, it might be possible that one of the stock metal brake =
lines is plugged up a little, and more pressure is going to one caliper =
than the other. That might cause it to pull to one side. If one caliper =
is grabbing more than the other, that would cause drift under braking.=20
It could also be that something is loose in the wheel rotation =
mechanism. If there is too much play on one side, it could possibly =
cause drift under braking. I would check the bearings and joints in the =
front end for evenness (is that a word?). I would also check all of the =
front suspension composents for tighness and possible uneven wear.=20
Also, check if one shock is bad. If one is bad, it could make that side =
"sink" under braking and cause drift.
Anyway, these are just my thoughts. Can't hurt, right? Good luck to =
you,and please let me know if this helps you any. ---Dan

Subject: Re: DML: Serious Brake Pull
I've had similar problems, but don't know if this will help you. In the
past
I've put BF Goodrich Comp TA tires on all four wheels. This caused my
car to
be very sensitive to road changes and sometimes pulled the wheel from my
hands. Adjusting the alignment for more toe-in helped. It appears these
tires were much stickier to the ground and the alignment had to be
changed to
correct this. Since then, I've change these tires now to BF Goodrich
Radial
TA's (the newest series just released) and my steering is now back to
normal
confirming my suspicions. By the way, these tires are only SR rated,
these
are the only ones that will fit.
Another thing that could cause pulling is if the frame is twisting under
load
from stopping. You could look for hidden cracks or excessive rust
weakening
the frame. You will know for sure if your windshield cracks for no
reason.

Jeff,
Go to www.dashmat.com That's where I purchased mine and it was
specifically
for the DeLorean. I believe it was about $25 to $30 and fits PERFECTLY
without using any of the vercro fasteners.
Hope this helps,

Joshua,
I had the EXACT same problem. Mine would pull to the left constantly. I
could let go of the wheel and it would start to drift and if I hit the
brake
it was worse. My car hasn't been in an accident so I had it checked out
like you did (brake lines, tires, ect.) Finally I took it to a EXCELLENT
body shop and they said the frame was off geomerty and they pulled it
straight and I haven't had a problem since. I can now hit (slam) on the
brakes and it will not sway to either side (even without my hand on the
steering wheel) It cost me about $200 but was well worth it.
Hope this helps,
Duke

My dad owns the exact car you described, and he has asked me to tell you
he'd let it go for $25,000. It is an early '81 (gas flap, VIN#1428) with
black leather interior, 5-speed tranny, lowered 2" to factory specs, and
twin turbos. It is nearly perfect with only 45,000 original miles.
Please e-mail me if you are interested. Pictures of this car can be seen
on my website at: http://members.tripod.com/~DeLoreanDMC/index.html

P.S.: He is only willing to sell our DeLorean in hopes that we can find
a nice '83 for sale, so the price is pretty firm.

Subject: DML: Auto Trans Computer Rebuild successful!!!
When I first started looking into rebuilding the computer governor, alot =
of people wanted me to keep them posted and let them know the results. =
Well the first rebuild (on mine) is complete and, so far, a complete =
success. We've removed the 2 boards from the governor housing and =
mounted them in the engine compartment so not to worry with as much heat =
that is generated from the transmission. After all testing is done, we =
will go back in and make the new box (that holds the 2 boards) fit =
behind the drivers side cubby hole. It will be detachable so, if repair =
is needed, it can be easily removed. Another feature we will add is to =
add LED's to the box so you can tell if the governor is acting properly. =
What I need now is a guinea pig. If someone has just a bad =
transmission computer govenor (meaning no problems with the transmission =
itself) please contact me. I would like to rebuild another unit to make =
sure everything works fine. The problem I had with mine is it would go =
from 3rd to 2nd but the problems had just started and I immediately =
removed the governor and repaired it. I'm looking for one that is in =
worse shape than mine was. If anyone is interested, please email me.
