Subject: DML: Repainting Facias
One of my projects for the DeLorean this winter was to repaint the front
and rear facias. I removed both facias and trucked them over to two
local paint shops for quotes. Each shop quoted $450 for the pair just to
paint over the existing paint. And because the facias already had
several layers of paint on them they would not guarantee that they
wouldn't crack when I tried to reinstall them back on the car. One shop
said they could partially sand them but that was another $200 and he
still would not guarantee them. That's when I decided to do the painting
myself.
The first task was to try and straighten the eyebrow over the one
headlamp. This was accomplished by heating the warped area with a
infrared spotlight like you have in bathroom ceiling heaters. Once the
area was quite warm and soft I clamped two pieces of wood across the
warped area to straighten it and removed the lamp and let it sit
overnight. In the morning I removed the splints and had a straight
fascia.
The next task was to remove the several layers of paint on each fascia.
I used Parks Pro Stripper furniture paint stripper. Methylene Chloride
is the active ingredient that removes the paint. The trick is to not let
the paint stripper sit on the bare plastic so you need to wash it off
before it can attack the plastic fascia. This took several days of
applying chemicals, scrubbing off paint, reapplying another coat of
chemicals and scrubbing off paint. Finally got down to bare plastic.
I couldn't find any paint suppliers to cross reference the DAU33584
paint spec so I found the PPG web site and found the central office
telephone number. To find a local PPG supplier call the main office at
(440)572-6100. My local dealer turned out to be just three miles from my
house. I wanted to prime the bare plastic, paint it and apply a clear
overcoat to my
facias. This required six components. I also found out that the DAU
paint tints has been discontinued and replaced with DBC33584. These are
the six PPG components:
DX814 Flexibilizer $22.10/pt
DU5 Urethane Hardener $42.85/qt
DT870 Reducer $10.65/qt
DBC33584 Paint $43.10/qt
DCU2001 Clear Urethane Overcoat $30.70/qt
DPX801 Plastic Primer $31.95/qt
The primer is applied straight from the can. The paint is applied as one
part paint and one part reducer. The clear coat is applied as two parts
clear, one part reducer, one part hardener, and one part flexibilizer.
The finished product looks pretty good too.

Subject: DML: Automatic Transmission Cooler
Hello ,
I have recently decided to add an auxillary cooler to my automatic
transmission and my search led me to a guy named Teri Jennings (thanks,
Dick
Ryan). I remember seeing his name in some of my older Delorean World and
Gullwing publications and I suspect those of you who have been involved
with
Deloreans for awhile may remember him. I called him today and found him
to be
quite personable and knowledgeable about the car, various club history
and
specialty parts (he evidently manufactured things like whale tales, oil
filter
adapters, stainless steel bumper letters, etc.) . Seems he had not been to
active lately with the Delorean hobby and was not aware of the DMCnews

Hi Dan,
I had a problem like what you describe here (though I did not have
anything
replaced prior to the problem). Looking through the archives, you can
find
where I described my problem in detail toward the end of:
http://www.dmcnews.com/backissues/dml302.html. I felt that I was in for
some major repairs, but was pleasently surprised when my fuel/air mix was
determined to be the culprit. A quick and cheap solution. Hope yours is
equally easy.

I had a sputter problem, it went away after we cleaned the water out from
around the spark plug (down in the well). The plug boot was not properly
installed on the spark plug well. I had the car put on an engine analyzer
and the problem was found in the first minute.
Get a bright flash light and look in the wells. Also, when installing the
plug wires, put a small amount of tune up grease on the porcelin and also
where the boot goes over the top of the well. It will be easier to take
apart the next time.

All parts of the dash and door panels are made of vinyl, with the
exception
of the switches and facias, which are plastic, and the leather seat
faces. On
the vinyl and plastic, use Lexol Vinylex. It's a great cleaner with UV
protectant and does not leave a greasy look or feel. You can use it
everywhere
except the leather. Do not use it on the leather! Lexol also makes
excellent
leather cleaners and conditioners.

Subject: DML: Antenna Location
I have read some posts on antenna locations on the D. I read one post of
someone who plugged the antenna hole on the front fender to move the
antenna
with a silver steel disk. I am looking at a D to buy and it is really a
nice
car. However one thing that really bothers me is the fact that the
antenna is
a mast mount on the right front fender as was the case with some early
model
81's I think the rear retractable antennas look so much better. I read
there
was a factory service bulletin available showing how to move the antenna
from
the fender to the rear but I havent been able to find a copy of it. Does
anyone know where I can get a copy? Also is there anyone who has moved
the
antenna from the fender to the rear or a different location? Any
suggestions
of the best alternative to the front fender mount would be greatly
appreciated

Subject: DML: Which Alternator
Hello all,
I'm thinking about replacing the alternator in our Delorean some time in
the near future and have read several post in the archives some of which
are a little old not that it matters. I'm curious if there is an
alternator that seems to be a favorite or preferred model to install.
I have driven the car just enough to begin noticing the voltage drop
with the headlights on along with a few accessories "fans, ect. We have
an 83 with the Motorola 90 amp and am curious what everyone thinks about
amperage, installation, brands and so on. I've read about the 105 AMP
Delco, 100 AMP Delco, and the 144 Amp Delco and saw others on the parts
cross reference list. "Champion: 74-1502, Velo: 9AR, Excel: 14324"
Sorry if this is a boring question, just thought I'd use some of the
experience of the group out there to help make my decision. I'm going
to ask a couple of the DeLorean service centers as well before I decide.
BTW, as I told DMCJoe the car has been at a Midas shop for a few days
and the manager said he has never seen so many people stop by just to
see "that car" in the service bay.

Subject: DML: Trip to PJ Grady's
Well last week I made a trip to PJ Grady's. I am in the market for a D
and I
spoke to Rob about a couple he had at his shop for sale. After looking
at a D
here in north Jersey I drove another 2 hours out to Long Island to Rob's
place. I couldnt believe how many Deloreans he had there. Well I met Rob
upon arrival. He literally dropped what he was working on and took the
time
to talk to me about Deloreans. We then went for a test drive in one of
the
cars he had for sale. He told me some of the things to watch out for when
looking at Deloreans. I told him I was very interested in one D in New
Jersey
I had seen earlier that day. A 1981 with 2,000 original miles. He said
he
would drive out to look the car over for me for a fee which I thought was
very
reasonable for the peace of mind I would having Rob check over a car I
was to
purchase. I was very impressed with Rob's place. He was very courteous
and
really seemed to enjoy talking about Deloreans. I had never met him
before
but after hearing so many good things from people on this list I can say
that
they are all true when it comes to Rob. I have made a decision on which
D I
am going to buy of all the ones I have looked at and hope to get it in the
next couple weeks. One of the first places it will be going is to PJ
Grady's
to be checked over and to have a tiny ding on the hood fixed. Rob has
spoken
to me several times helping me with my purchase decisions which he does
not
make any money from. He has earned my future business. I am sure the
other
major Delorean sales and service centers out there are very reliable and
personable. Let me say that for those of you however who have not dealt
with
PJ Grady or met Rob as I had not before, the people on this list are
right.
He is an extremely knowledgeable and personable man who I look forward to
doing business with time and again in the future when my D needs proper
parts
or service.

The Motorola (Velo) is our top choice, the Delco is right behind. Call PJ
Grady he will hook you up with the best available at this time. BTW there
is a possibility that your current unit is OK and you may have a ground
problem. To find out for sure, take your alternator to a service facility
that can do a "bench test". This could save you $$$.

Subject: DML: DML Listing
Dear DML,=20
This is my first time posting here, even though I've gotten quite a few =
issues of the DML. Anyway down to the point: Are there any DeLorean =
enthusiasts, owners, or sellers in the Kentucky area? I'm just looking =
for any other DeLorean fans in the area! Just give me an e-mail or post =
back.=20
Thanks!
Wes (martins@xxxxxxx)

Postings to the DELOREAN MAILING LIST are the opinions of the author and
not necessarily those of the list moderator or his Internet

false, misleading, and negative postings, but it is up to you
to realize that nothing should be taken as
actual fact without research and investigation of your own.
