Dave Levey suggested Collector Plates as an alternative to Historic
plates:
He has a good point. The benefits of Collector Plates are almost as
good as Historical Plates (for which cars MUST be 25 years or older) but
the requirements for the car are not as strict. The toughest
requirement is that you must have another car as your "main" car, and
drive the collector car.

Historical Plate details are on the website now, but some of the
information on Collectors Plates has recently changed and the details
are not provided today. They advise Ohioans to call 614-752-7800 for
the latest scoop.
Currently, many Ohio DeLoreans bear Collector Plates but not Historical
Plates. I presume other states offer something similar.

If you remove the vinyl portion of the stripe first, the glue that is =
left can be removed using (3M Citrus Base Cleaner Part # 34-7041-4529-0 =
62-4615-4930-5) This is a 18.5 oz aerosol can cost 15.00 to 20.00. Very =
hard to get Home Depot had it but around here no more. You might want to =

I have used this to remove all types of vinyl stripes from cars, boats, =
signs etc.
The only sign that a stripe was there is if the stainless has faded if =
that can happen. With painted cars the paint under the stripe is not =
faded so depending on the length of time the stripe has been there is =
how bad the fading difference is.

Darren,
The compartment door has two tabs at the bottom that hold it in place,
there should be enough space to place a screwdriver under the door and pry
it out without doing any damage.

Thanks for the tip, BTW if you don't have a Harbor Freight store nearby, a
heavy duty telescoping paint pole also works well. We use one called Mr.
Longarm model 9248 available at most home centers and paint supply stores.

As part of my transmission job, Bob Brandys suggested that I repack the
CV joints since the axles are out of the car anyway. The DMC manuals
would have you believe that the axles are non-serviceable, this is not
exactly the case. The CV Boots are readily available to replace torn
ones. Based on the age of these cars, it would probably be a good idea to
check and do this - remember the grease is aproaching 18 years old! And
the CV joints themselves are expensive, and they usually fail due to
dirt. Uninterrupted, this is probably an all-day project.
Rather than go into details here, there are a couple of great sources for
illustrated instructions on this procedure. The Haynes manual on the 1981
5-series BMW has exactly the right photos (you'd swear they were working
on a DMC). I also found a excellent non-commercial website where someone
has posted a detailed, photos and all, procedure on repacking Volkswagen
Microbus CV joints. Again, you'd think that they were working on the
Delorean. The only difference on these instructions was the fact that DMC
uses hex screws to secure the axles in the car, whereas the BMW and VW
used Allen screws.

It's been about two months since I last posted on this. The first 6 parts
of this should be in the archives by now. Over these months I've
reassembled my transmission with all the new seals and slave cylinder,
installed the new clutch, and prepped everything for re-install including
filling it with synthetic gear oil before I put it in the car. I've also
decided to repack my CV joints. I'll post separately on that for
archiving reasons. Today I finally heated up the garage and re-installed
the transmission. Relatively uneventful, but a couple of observations:
Someone had told me to remove the water pipes. I didn't, having just
replaced all the hoses last summer I really didn't want to open the
system up again. It would have made it easier to get the trans back in
but was not really necessary.
I made a couple of guide pins by cutting the heads off of two long screws
of the size that hold the bellhousing to the engine. This worked great
and helped line everything up. An old trick from working on Chevys. Just
don't make the pins too long, about 3 1/2 inches.
Reattaching the lower flywheel cover plate with all 4 screws appears to
require that the engine be lifted. I just put in the two outer screws.
I've been told that a lot of people just leave the plate off completely.
Mine was in place with one screw when I took it apart.
Bleeding the hydraulic system is still a pain in the neck, although
having done it a few times I can do it in about ten minutes now instead
of the 2 hours it took the first time. (Hint - take off the engine
cover). And I'd really like to punish the designer of the shift linkage.
The trick on that is to install the upper part (the cable attachment)
BEFORE installing the crossgate linkage, otherwise it is impossible to
get a socket on the middle bolt.
The pedal action on the new clutch feels fantastic - not quite up to
Honda standards but much better than the truck-like feel that it had. I
won't be able to try driving it for another 6 weeks or so - it's still
snowing here.

In Colorado, the car has to be 25 years old. That is the only rule
regarding collector's plates. If your car was made prior to WWII, you can
get special "horseless carriage" plates, but they make no difference.
The good news is that once you do get collector plates, you become
emissions exempt and in some cases can get an insurance discount.
