This morning I was contacted by Sara Beugen of PGI, and she is in need of
a DeLorean for three shows -
Washington, DC - February 5
Dallas, TX - February 19
St.Louis, MO - March 5
I know we have DML'ers in the Dallas and St. Louis area, but am unsure if
there are any around the capital.
They must be clean, nice looking original cars. It is my understanding
that they will be used as indoor displays and will not be driven.

Tom,
You have a weak passenger door solenoid, only a replacement or rebuilt
unit
will correct the problem. DeLorean door lock solenoids burn out because of
a poorly designed control unit. The Lockzilla is superior to the factory
unit and will allow the locks to work as they were designed and prevent
premature solenoid burnouts.

Dave,
The problem with the factory Door Lock Control Module is that the relays
inside the unit will stick closed causing the solenoids to overheat and
burn out. The test you did will not harm the solenoids as long as you only
apply an intermittent shot of 12 volts. To prevent good solenoids from
being destroyed we recommend that owners disconnect their lock modules.
The
only solution to this problem is to install the Lockzilla.

I had EXACTLY the same problem. I took off the interior trim panel, and
greased (using spray grease) all of the little arms and pivots in the
locking system. It fixed the poroblem, and it works perfectly now, even
in really cold weather.
I kind of thought that a sticking mechanism was the problem because I
could see the passenger lock lever move a little when activated from the
driver's side, but never fully unlock. Also, check to make sure the
electrical switch is working on the driver's side (to make sure the
solenoid is actually getting the signal to unlock on the passenger's
side.) Good luck

I don't know if I would choose the luggage compartment to store a fire
extinguisher - I have mine in the passenger compartment with me so I can
get to it quickly. I think the areas that have the highest likelihood of
fires are the engine compartment and the relay area behind the passenger
seat. I don't know that I would want to take the time to pop the hood,
exit the car, raise the hood remove the extinguisher and then fight the
flames...

I would say that it depends mostly on the climate you are in - here in
Phoenix, I use 10W30 in all my cars.
As far as filter location, look under the rear of your car at the
passenger side. It'll be on that side of the block.
If you haven't already, you may want to take some time and download the
DeLorean Factory Parts Manual from the DMC-News website. It's in Adobe
Acrobat format, so you'll need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader from the
Adobe website (www.adobe.com). The parts manual have great "exploded"
diagrams of the car listing part names and numbers, which is also useful
when ordering parts.

I used 10W-40, mainly because I live in California (The hotter the
climate the thicker the oil you should use). The Volvo dealer
recommended that I use 10W-30 the next time I change the oil (Why, I
don't know). Some people swear by synthetic oils, which do have great
characteristics and will outperform any natural oil, however it costs
quite a bit more than natural. The expense of the oil comes into play
since the Delorean holds about 7 quarts! The filter itself is located
on the right side of the engine, toward the bottom, near the
alternator. It will probably be cleaner than the parts surrounding it.
If you're planning on doing the job yourself, you will need a special
tool to get the drain plug out. I have a bench grinder, so I just got
an old allen wrench that I didn't like anymore, and ground it into a 8mm
square (or whatever size it is). Good luck

Lisa,
The oil filter is located at the right side lower part of the engine
block.
We recommend Castrol 10 W/ 30 but any high grade product will do. You will
need 7 quarts to fill the system including the filter. If you are doing
the
change yourself refill the system with 6.5 quarts and than top off the
system according to the dip stick so as not to overfill the system.

We're having a problem with our brakes, they don't work! I remember a
little while ago someone saying something about DOT 3 brake fluid
"eating up" the brake systems on DeLoreans. Is this true? If that's the
case, then we know why our brakes failed. :( They were leaking a little
when we bought the car, but instead of getting them fixed right away, we
just kept refilling the tanks with brake fluid. The problem is, we used
DOT 3 oil. Oops. So, is the problem that we used the wrong oil, or is it
just a broken seal and so much air has gotten into the system that they
won't work? We'd like to know so we might save some money only buying a
new seal instead of a whole new system. Thanks in advance!

I have a halon extiguisher mounted on the floor next to the emergency
brake
lever. The trunk is a bit inaccessable in a real emergency.

the rear right (passenger) wheel just below and ahead of the engines

Hi, my name is Jayson Tobias, and I became somewhat of a Delorean owner =
2 weeks ago. Since I am going away to college in two years, my father =
bought a 1981 (The year I was born) Delorean #01071 as a father-son =
bonding project. I say I am somewhat of an owner because this is mostly =
his money, and the vehicle has been wrecked, making it somewhat of a =
Delorean. I have a ton of questions to ask, and I hope this Mailing =
List is the proper forum in which to do so. =20
First of all, what is the best place(s) to buy parts? And by parts, I =
am specifically referring to a L/F fender (that'll cost me), front =
fiberglass section, hood, nose cone etc., door seals, electrical odds =
and ends, carpeting, and a new seat. Perhaps I should narrow it down a =
bit. If I had to rank attributes, I would have to go compatibility (of =
course), then cost (reasonability, used is great), and finally OEM =
components. We will tackle almost all repairs, so that should lessen =
the cost quite a bit. That, of course, was no complete list. With my =
list of parts, I guess it's not too hard to tell where it was smacked.
Second, is there a place to talk with Delorean owners in real time? I =
would love to chat with everyone without having to play e-mail tag. Is =
that what the lounge at DMC News is for?
Next, just out of curiosity, are there any D owners near central =
Kansas? The last time and only time I've seen a D was in Kansas City in =
'92. (I'm so deprived)
Is there a CD-ROM that contains things such as Parts, Owner, Tech, and =
Service Manuals? I've heard of a DeLorean Collection CD-ROM, but I =
didn't know if it has been released yet.
Finally, rather than starting some huge thread with all of my =
questions, if you would prefer, send e-mail to tobias@xxxxxxxxxxx Any =
help would be greatly appreciated, as I have a lot to do to this =

I was able to find two of the Johnny Lightning BTTF cars at my local Toys
R
Us just a couple of days before Christmas. They were about $5. They say
they get shipments in every couple of weeks, but I got the last two there
at the time. I have been back once a few days ago to check but have not
found any more -- just the Dragnet, Blues Bros. and the Monkeys cars.
Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that's interested in the cars:
they have hit the stores!!! Also, they are the best of the BTTF Delorean
die-casts out there.

Thanks Silver Fox, but isn't 15w50 awfully thick? Or do I have it
backwards? I
thought 10-30 is the thinner oil and 15-50 is the heavier, thicker stuff.
(obviously I'm not eactly an expert on cars -- yet!) The climate where I
live
(S.F. Bay Area) is in the moderate range. So wouldn't perhaps 10W40 be a
good
pick for me?

If you were losing fluid, and gradually losing braking pressure, I'd =
venture to guess that you need a new master cylinder. Sounds like the =
seal is bad. It's not worth rebuilding. It's $175 from PJ Grady. I got =

I never lock my doors when I drive so as the DeLorean GODs like to play
jokes on me I got locked inside my car. I was on my way to work when
for no reason my doors just locked. I thought no big deal.. I'll just
unlock the doors.. Darn!!! the doors wont unlock! so I pulled the
cables from the relay compartment just to get out. I never did
reconnect the power locks. Now, half the time I have hard time
unlocking the passenger door. I must force the lock to the unlock
position and hold it there and open the door just to unlock it. I cant
even use the key out of fear of bending it.

Albert,
Your door lock problem is due to burnt lock solenoid, to correct this
problem just remove the lock solenoid from the passenger door and you will
find that both the key and interior lock switch will operate smoothly. To
restore the locking system to its original design you will need to install
the Lockzilla.

It takes some time for the DOT 3 to break down the seals, here is what you
should try before taking any drastic measures. First pump out all of the
DOT 3 that is in the system than refill with DOT 4 and air bleed the
system. Let us know what happens.

Lisa, the 15 is the thin number and you would want as low as number as
possible in cold weather. The opposite is true for the 50, the thick
number, - the higher the temperature the thicker you want that oil. The
15w50 was recommended for the Chicago area. Frankly I don't drive my cars
in the winter or in the terribly hot summer so I could get away with 30.

Not in a hot climate, especially if it's synthetic. Synthetic oils are
that much better. :} I wouldn't use it in Alaska, though. As a rule,
synthetic oils aren't necessary unless you are driving very hard or don't
change your oil on schedule.

No. use 10w30. 10w40 oil is much more prone to thermal breakdown. In
general, you want the smallest gap between viscosity ratings you can get.
Multi-viscosity oils work by mixing the regular oil with polymers which
help hold the oil together in hotter conditions. But the bigger the gap
between numbers, the more polymers are needed. And the more polymers you
have in your oil, the easier it is to break down, as well as some other
minor problems as well. In addition it is harder to keep such oils
flowing at very cold temperatures. It won't hurt your car (which was
after all originally designed to use it), however, 10w40 is not a better
oil than 10w30.
Although 10w40 was the waning standard at the time of the DeLorean's
manufacture, it has been seen that it really isn't necessary in most
cases. By the mid-80's everyone was using 10w30. Very few manufacturers
actually recommend 10w40 any more, and much of the time use of 10w40 will
actually void a new-car warranty. Just say no.

store carries them, and that those that do are usually sold out.
EVERYBODY wants this car! (I have been to Toys "R" Us, Kay Bee, and even
F.A.O. Schwatz at Caesars Palce and only found 1! Now the Really bad
news, each car comes with a trading card from the movie, and each card
has a different scene on it! So if you just want the DeLorean itself, no
problem, but if you want to "Collect 'Em All", good luck!

as I think they should be. I bled them last night and it made no

Assuming the bulbs were checked and are good, check the wires on the door
button under the dash by the edge of the door, check if the wires are
unplugged from the switch or the switch contacts are dirty. The door light
switch wires are purple and red, and black w/o stripe. The other set of
wires are for the door open buzzer and are purple and red, and black with
a
white stripe. I may be off a shade in the color spectrum due to some color
blindness but this is probably your problem. I am also assuming your
interior lights do not come on when you open the drivers side door.
