A mechanic friend of mine said that the fuel lines on the DeLorean
motors are prone to leakage which may/will cause a fire. Has anyone
heard of this as a problem? Has anyone seen this first hand? If you
have, what is the necessary repair needed to stop this from happening?

Sounds like there may be a tear or hole in your fuel pick up line, which
allows air bubbles to enter the fuel system. an air bubble at an injector
translates to no fuel for that firing cycle, which would produce the exact
symptoms you describe.

I think the brackets in question are (or were) special products sold by PJ
Grady. Assuming that I am thinking of the correct product, then I have a
brand new set that I plan to install in the future. I won them in the
raffle
at the DOA Expo in Nashville in 1996. It's a funny thing, I do not
remember myself or anyone else mentioning them on the DML before.
If you are interested in learning about these brackets I suggest you call

Sounds like a bad solenoid. New and improved units can be ordered from
the Delorean part suppliers. I also recommend the "Lockzila" module
sold by PJGRADY, which will prevent your door lock's from killing

Sunday evening, while my daughter and I were test driving a prospective
new
car for her, I was just pulling out from an intersection and my daughter
starts yelling Dad, Dad, Dad!! Well, panicking, I jambed on the brakes
thinking I had failed to see an oncoming car, then I followed where she
was
pointing and lo and behold there was a DeLorean sitting in a driveway
directly
across the intersection. It was sitting next to a vintage Plymouth Fury
III
and had no license plates on it and the grass around it was knee high.
After
driving the car we were test driving back to the owners house, we
returned to
where we saw the car just to verify where it was. I didn't want to knock
on
the door then and look like a tourist, so next weekend I'll take my

If the car has 450 miles, and has been "stored" it is not a big deal
that the hydraulics do not work.
If they do get it running without replacing all of the fuel lines, and
cleaning out the tank, run the other way!
I am going to pass on the "is it worth it" question. If someone is
willing to pay that much for it, then it is worth it!
My advice would be, Look at more than one car before you buy it.

Workshop and parts manuals are available from DeLorean One, DMC Houston,
and P.J. Grady. The previous owner of you car has either a fan by pass
switch of has wired the fans to stay on to prevent overheating. Do
yourself
a favor and purchase the Fanzilla from P.J. Grady, you will need to
disconnect the constant "fan on" modification first. You fast flasher is
due to a bad connection or incorrect bulb installed in the front
directional signal that is misbehaving.

Larry,
Before you take any action check the reading of your dash voltmeter
compared to an external test meter. Attach the test meter to the "jump
start post" in the engine compartment and see what you get there. With all
accessories off you should read appox. 14.4 volts, all accessories on
including A/C your reading should drop to appox. 12.4 volts. If your
readings are close than you may have a slight voltage drop going to the
dash gauge, if so, nothing to worry about.

Volvo used the B28F until 1988 at that time they changed to the B280F
which
is basically the same block with the LH Jetronic fuel system. This engine
was used until 1990 and than discontinued. The B28E that you mentioned is
exactly the same as the B28F except that the "E" indicates European.
Because European emission standards are less strict than the USA the
engine
can deliver more horsepower.

Kayo,
It is unlikely that your new pump is bad, the pump either works or it
doesn't. Although you have had all the pick up components changed they
should be checked again. The fuel baffle and return system is designed to
maintain fuel supply to the fuel pump when the tank is low. The groaning
sound you hear is the fuel pump being starved for fuel, when this happens
the car will hesitate as you indicated. Re-inspect the baffle, filter
screen and pick up hose for proper installation and operation.

Nick,
Your wipers are functioning properly, go to your owners manual and follow
the directions for canceling the "windshield wiper intermittent
operation".
The fuel pump start and RPM flicker is normal on some cars. When you flash
your lights a slight transient or surge of current makes its way to the
RPM
relay which thinks that you want to start the car. When the relay realizes
that the engine is not turning it shuts off.
Your lock problem is due to a defective lock solenoid in the drivers door.
As a temporary fix disconnect the door lock plug in the passenger door.
This will prevent current from going to the driver door solenoid, which
means that you will have to lock the drivers door manually. If you want
the
system to operate as it was designed you'll need to replace the defective
solenoid and the lock module and replace it with the Lockzilla from P.J.
Grady.
Lastly you DeLorean should idle at 750rpm at all times, the 1500 and over
condition means that the Idle Speed Circuit is not working, start by
checking the operation of the idle speed micro switch located under the
air
cleaner box next th the air measurement intake.

I have experienced exactly the same thing. Whenever I turn my wipers
from ON to OFF they put themselves into INTERMITTENT, and after that
there seems to be no way to turn them off. To shut off intermittent
wipers, you are supposed to be able to push the wiper control lever
down for a moment, but this did not work in my car. It was frustrating at
first, then I found this method of shutting off my intermittent wipers:
As mentioned in the owner's manual, you push the wiper control lever
into the down position, which causes the wipers to make one swipe.
Instead of releasing the lever immediately, hold the lever down until the
wipers have completed the swipe; the moment they reach their parked
position you release the lever. In my car the wipers stay parked.
I do not know if this was the intended way of controlling the wipers, but
it works for me and I have gotten accustomed to it.

Subject: DML: DeLorean Model in BTTF Ride?
Last night on TLC they did a show on theme park rides, and one of the
main rides then discussed was "Back to the Future." When they
showed the making of the BTTF ride, I was surprised to see what
appeared to be an ordinary commercial 1/24 scale plastic model of the
BTTF DeLorean used in filming.
Somehow they made that little model look perfect, even when shown on
a giant movie screen! They added working lights, a good paint job, and
other details that made it a dead ringer for a real DeLorean.
Can anyone comment on whether or not the DeLorean was an ordinary
plastic model instead of a digital model? If so, does anyone know the
techniques they used to make it look so darn good?
Another note: I have never ridden the BTTF ride myself, but I was
disappointed to see that the keys they used in the theft scene look
nothing like the keys to my DeLorean, or any other car I have ever
owned. They looked like somebody's house keys.

Dave:
Aside from Joe's "snapping" method-which I use myself when a standard
socket
wrench is all I have at hand-you might try using a longer breaker-bar or
ratchet. Those standard 3/8" drive sockets are kind of short at about ten
inches long. I have a 24" long half-inch drive ratchet that makes all
sorts
of
engine work incredibly easy. All except for the price-that ratchet alone
cost me fifty bucks...
Another trick I use that works really well on loosing corroded plumbing
(copper is a lot softer than steel or aluminum, so this method will work
well for you) is to use a rubber mallet and gently tap the very end of the
ratchet in a counter-clockwise direction. It's basically the same thing
as
Joe's snapping. The light jarring of the tap loosens the threads.
>Well folks, I'm trying (in vain) to replace my spark plugs, and four of

Good luck. Don't forget that anti-seize compound, and be careful. You
don't want to strip those threads!

It sounds like you're missing the bushing that goes between the steering
column and the metal plate. Look in your parts manual at
section 5, subsection 2, group 1 and it's item # 23. If you don't have a
parts book, go to www.usadmc.com and do a parts search. The
part number is 101994 and see if you have that bushing.

That's a lot. There aren't many DeLoreans worth $26,000 - maybe a
concours winner, or prototype.
Based on what you said, I might pay $12K for this car, $15K tops just for
the low miles. With a DeLorean the key is what condition it's in, not the
mileage. There have been much better vehicles advertised on the list
rcently for not too much more than that. The low mileage does help some -
you know the engine is probably in good shape and the frame ditto.
Although the engines generally are in pretty good shape, some frames can
be pretty bad. You also have a lot of struts to replace - not too hard to
do, but still detracts. The low miles might mean the car hasn't been
driven, which would mean fuel problems, which could be trouble. The
passenger window will probably be hard to fix too, if you care. And it's
not as if the dealer is going to provide you service for the car - you're
really not getting any benefit by buying from a dealer here.
I think that everyone that sees a D for sale ought to look at the
dmcnews.com buy & sell page which has a variety of DeLoreans in varying
conditions for sale. You can probably match up any car you're considering
with a comparable one on the page which will give you an idea of how much
others are worth.

This could indicate an electrical leak, depending on how long it's been
parked. (Batteries do drain under their own power, too).

Because it goes away when the tank is full, you might look at your fuel
pickup hose (in the tank). You might have a perforation in it that is
sucking in air when the tank gets low. Of course, maybe PJ Grady checked

Subject: DML: Re: repair manuals
Brian,
You can get the manuals from any of the DMC shops. They can also be
bought
in a set of 4. The fans running constantly are probably because there is
a
jumper wire connected to the wires that are supposed to go to the thermal
switch. Look in the engine compartment on the driver's side. Look for
the
hose going from the water pump to the water pipe (going towards the
drivers
side door). If you feel along the bottom of the water pipe, you'll feel
the
thermal envelope switch (P/N 100816 located in the parts manual at
section
1, subsection 3, group 2 item # 65). There should be two wires connected
to
it. If not, start looking for two wires in that general area that are
jumped together. This is why they are running constantly. On the turn
signals, this is a common problem with the D. One that's flashing fast
usually means that either the front or rear bulb is burnt out, however, if
both the front and back are working, try changing out the bulbs. The
solder
may be wearing off the bulbs. Feel free to email me directly if you have
any other questions.

Hi
My 81 clock sometimes will display and cut out. It keeps time when it
comes on, and keeps time when it does not display.
Any Ideas or know how
to fix it? The gear selector lights (Automatic) are out too. Fuse is good.
Thank You

Hi, My name is Andy. I really like Deloreans and I have been looking
around for information on them. I am 15 and I liked them a lot when I
was younger, before I knew anything about cars, and of course, It was in
"Back to the Future" that I first saw one. Recently I have seen the
movie again and I also saw one in "The Wedding Singer". From what I have
gathered, they go for about $16,000 to $20,000, depending on their
condition. I really would like to get a "D" with a few problems and fix
it up. I really like how they have features of world class automobiles
at a fraction of the cost. My dad currently owns a '73 DeTomaso Pantera
that is black with a black interior and has a delta spoiler. Anyway, my
main questions are: A: Can a Delorean be painted, and B: Are there any
people who know of Deloreans for sale in the Ohio area or anyone who can
provide me with further information on the car.
P.S. Feel free to E-mail me back about the Pantera!

Actually when you look at the results of the crash test in the video,
they wouldn't be
the same as if you were to hit someone on the freeway, mathematically
you'd have to rear-end
someone on the freeway going at least 110-120 mph to get the results you
saw in the video. A
couple reasons for that, is 1- the fact the the wall is in solid state,
and has no moentum
2-the wall absorbs no energy 3-hitting someone on the freeway would cause
them to absorb
your energy and momentum.
Another good point that someone made was that, the more parts fly off
and so forth, the
more energy the car absorbs, instead of all of it released on you.
With all the new DeLorean products being made, i wanted to know what
all of you would
think of a full sized DeLorean poster, for all you owners, and soon to be
owners. I always
thought a 15'x4' poster would look nice in my house. I've been thinking
of looking for a
good publishing company that can make posters, and getting a good shot of
a DeLorean. Any
thoughts? phoenixl@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Subject: Re: DML: RE: Steering column creep
Your problem may very well stem from a grommet that surrounds the steering
column where it goes through the firewall. If it's missing or broken out
you
should replace A.S.A.P. because, 1) the steering becomes very unpleasant
and
2) you run the risk of elongating the opening and then a new grommet may
be
useless. How do I know this? Well, just had the same problem with my
car.
BTW be sure and lube hell out of the new grommet when you install it,
otherwise you are stuck with a sticking, squeaking steering column every
time
you turn the wheel. DeLorean Motor Company (281) 568-9573, part number

Gerald,
NONSENSE! Your mechanic is incorrect. Fuel lines will only leak if they
are
damaged or have been improperly serviced. There are 3 fuel lines, 2 at the
fuel pump and one at the accumulator that have a plastic coating that will
crack and fall off with age, however this will not compromise their
integrity. We know of no DeLorean fires that were caused by leaking fuel
lines. Any car with leaking fuel lines is a potential fire hazard.

Subject: DML: New owner
First of all, sorry if I insulted any of you by comparing my Fiero to my
DeLorean. I promise NEVER to use the "F" word again on the DML.
I took my D to get it smogged today and discovered the predudice that D
owners experience. I tried to use a discount coupon and look poor but to
no avail. The mechanic said, and I quote, "We don't like working on those
cars!". I tried to explain that I was in for a smog test, not an engine
rebuild! Instead of immediately checking the car, he put it in the
garage and just let it run while he figured out where to connect what
wire where. I was watching the temp guage slowly go up into the red and
quickly went over and turned off the engine. He told me to park it
outside until it cooled off and then to come back. I got in the car,
backed it out of the garage and KEPT GOING! Onto the freeway and to
another place which was run by 6 mechanics and had grease EVERYWHERE!
These guys loved the car and I was out of there in 15 minutes with a
clean bill of health!
The first mechanics left some scratches near the right rear window where
they had dragged their hoses across the finish. I'm new at this stuff and
am afraid to make them worse. Do I really use a 3M pad for these? Please
advise. I also want to show the car in a parade coming up but am afraid
of overheating in the stop and go procession. The weather is cool now but
I'll still be nervous. I don't want the embarassment of having to push
the car in the parade! Any advice? Last question: is it bad to drive in a
parade with the doors open? 5 mph tops...Thanks a lot. Fil.

My car use to creep down over time. I put a bolt and nut along the track
to
stop the sliding . Also, with this being tight, my steering wheel whould
still move up and down about an inch all due to a cracked steering cage.
PJ
Grady has welded this for me and now my steering stays where I put it and
is
solid.

reply:
I take exception to some of the speculation as to the crash video, but
first let me say I am not criticizing the DeLorean nor the author, just
taking exception to suggested facts that are simply incorrect.
1. "mathematically you'd have to rear-end someone on the freeway going at
least 110-120 mph to get the results you saw in the video".
This is not so while it seams logical that the effect of hitting a moving
object at twice it's own speed to have the same impact value as hitting a
stationary object at half that speed. In the case of two moving objects,
the amount of energy absorbed and the amount of deformation in either
depend on their individual masses and the inertial forces of both. Such a
condition is completely different than a stationary object being struck by
a moving object.
2. "is 1- the fact the wall is in solid state, and has no momentum"
Solid, liquid or gas, all matter has mass and momentum of some kind. In
the
context of the statement above it makes no sense at all. Normally the term
solid state refers to electronics devices verses vacuum tubes. The
probable
intention was to state that in the crash test the DeLorean hit a
stationary
object.
3. "2-the wall absorbs no energy "
THIS IS DEAD WRONG The wall absorbed a great deal of energy! much of
which
is transmitted to the ground, with the rest being transmitted back into
the
impacting object, and into the air expressed as sound. If you doubt this
think about 3 pool balls where one hits two that are touching and the one
opposite the striking ball shoots off making a cracking sound, while the
middle ball appears to remain quite still.
3. "3-hitting someone on the freeway would cause them to absorb your
energy
and momentum."
Here energy and momentum are being confused, one is the _expression_ of the
other.
"cause them to absorb your energy and momentum", The circumstances of
such
a collision is different in every case, and dependent on many variables
and
is not the same as the crash test, which attempt to measure a worst case
situation. It would be delusory to assume that the forces in a live
highway
collision would be less than a static impact test as is shown in the
DeLorean crash test. The amount of energy actually absorbed by the other
Auto could be next to nothing to a great deal.
Again let me stress that my comments are not intended to criticize the
author or the DeLorean auto, I feel very strongly that if information
about
auto safety and auto safety test are going to be posted, they should at
least be foundationally correct and clear.
Thanks
Lee
