Subject: DML: Engine starting trouble
On the Sunday afternoon of the DOA Expo98 my car developed a problem.
Of course by then all the experts had gone home so I had no idea what
to do. After starting the car it seemed like the engine was getting a
really bad fuel mixture. It would stumble and shake and I'd have to
play the gas pedal to keep the engine going. I could get the car to go
but it was really unhappy. After a few minutes whatever was wrong
would clear up and the engine would run normally. So far this is all I
can figure out:
When starting the car, the fuel regulator is supposed to make a
buzzing noise when the engine is running, but it won't do so when the
engine is first turned on. Hot or cold, It takes a few minutes before
it finally kicks in. then the car runs normally. I think it has
something to do with the fuel regulator or whatever controls it, which
is the O2 sensor and the Lambda computer. I thought it may have just
been the connector on the regulator because when I jiggled it, it
started to work. So I cleaned and tightened the connector and that
seemed to fix it. I ran a few errands and it did fine until the last
errand where it failed to kick in again. After the car has run for a
few minutes it always starts working, which would point to the O2
sensor? (I did just click over 30,000 mile and I did not change the
sensor), BUT even if the sensor is bad, the 'computer' is supposed to
put out a 70hz pulse to the regulator. I'm going to next put a scope
on the Lambda computer and see if it's putting out the pulses. If so,
it's still the connectors or the regulator. If not it's the O2 sensor,
Lambda, or connectors in between. I've looked through the DML archives
but I don't know what to search on. Can anyone give me any ideas as to
what wrong??

the engine and the front end. Tell me if you guys see anything (besides

huge hole in the dash) that would also be a "reason it should be lower
priced"
I really want a DeLorean to "fix-up". I really don't care the original
condition, but I don't want to pay a lot. I will probably strip the
whole
thing down and rebuild it (to make sure everything is good; Frame,
engine,
etc.)

yes Sandy i have experienced the same problem with the dash lights in my
D. althogh my air conditioning panel lights DO work. i again checked the
fuses and they were okay. i was going to have those looked at when i
took my D to garden grove along with a few other things but if you find
anything...let me know. thanx.

OK, this will be my last post on this subject. After talking to Rob at PJ
Grady and Joe at Delorean Services and recieving some encouragement, I
decided to give the window motor one more try.
I bolted everything together, despite the fact that nothing lined up.
Before putting the panels back I gave the window a try. When I wound the
window down it came off the tracks so I decided to fully close the window
and leave it like that forever (well a little while at least). The door is
now back together and I can now drive the car :)
I would now like to extend an invitation to anyoone who knows how to
install these motors correctly. If you are anywhere near Rapid City SD, I
would be ever so gratefull if you could pop in and take a crack at it. I
would be willing to pay for any expenses incurred, including travel,
accomodation and food (I'm desperate). I will even throw in a free tour of
the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore! It would also be nice to get the
opportunity for me to get together with another D owner.
Help me O-'D'-One, your my only hope.

The dash lights are controlled by the dimmer control under the shift boot
panel, to test this try plugging one of the red white wires into the
unused
terminals next to where the red / orange wire is plugged, if the lights
illuminate your dimmer control is N.G.. The AC panel lights are switched
on
with the ignition switch through the AC panel light relay located in the
relay compartment behind the passenger seat. Also check the "red" relay,
this is the dimmer portion of the circuit, be sure that this relay is
properly seated in its socket.

Andrew,
Your problem is improper CO mix. This is a critical adjustment and should
be done by someone who is familiar with the Bosch K-Jetronic system. I f
you don't have a DeLorean service facility near you look for a facility
the
repairs Volvo's. Being the Volvo V-6 1979 - 1983 uses the same fuel system
they should be familiar with the CO adjustment.

Ken,
Your problem is probably due to a defective RPM relay. This relay has two
internal relays, one sends 12v to the fuel pump, the other sends 12v to
the
frequency valve. Replacing this relay should correct the problem.

Hehe.. I haven't actually driven somewhere and parked to catch some
ZZ's, however, I have been working on my D late at night, and fallen
asleep "behind the wheel" ...
I'm 5-11, and at least in the passenger seat, I can slide the seat all the
way forward, and recline the seat to about a 150-degree angle, which
is quite comfortable, except for the headrest, which is a little akward
to lie on, but may be OK with one of those "Neck Pillows" ..

I hear you loud and clear. I just installed the same regulators and it
nearly killed me. I would rather rebuild the transmission with my teeth
than work inside the door again. While I was at it I decided to fix the
door locks, lube the mechanisms and replace the other window regulator
so that I NEVER have to open the door panels again. I too was concerned
about the alignment inside the doors, but that is how it is supposed to
work. I had to bend the mounting brackets several times before it would
mount at all, but I still feel it is superior to the old design. I,for
one am pleased by the new design. While the mounting isn't perfect,
it's unreasonable to expect anyone to engineer perfect replacements for
such a small market. We should be thankful a new design exists at all,
however better instructions would be helpful. Email me if you have any
questions on my experiences.

For $6,000 James Espey knows a guy in texas that has a D that needs a
computer. Much simpler then rebuilding a car. Also you'll need a louver

There are a couple things that JZD had a hand in creating that are
still used in cars today. Among them are Intermittent windshield
wipers, the ultramatic transmission for Packard (sort of a predecessor
to today's automatic transmission) wrap around taillights, and a whole
bunch of other things I can't think of right now. Go to a patent search
web site, and type in John DeLorean, and you're bound to come up with
quite a few listings.

October 31, 1998 is the Hooter's Car Show in Mobile Alabama. The link
below is for the registration form. We have our own class, #40, for the
DeLoreans. So far, I have had 9 positive responses from DeLorean Owners
that say they are interested in bringing there cars to Mobile for the
show.
We need 12 cars for Steve Wynne to come and put on an informal tech
session. The tech will be based on YOUR questions.
After the show, Saturday Night, I will host a BBQ at my home for all
owners and there guests. If you bring children that would like to go
trick or treating, my son (4), will be going. The neighborhood is new
and safe.

Hello-->
Anyone know the correct wattage for the bulbs that illuminate the
heater/fan/air conditioning consol panel? The ones I have are 2 Watts but
I think that maybe they were replaced with the wrong value at some point.
That plastic facia panel that they fit into gets way to hot (too hot to
touch) after a little while and has caused the sticker to peel away from
the plastic. The parts manual just says "BULB" with no mention of the
value. Thanks. :)

With the vast resources out there is there anywhay to find out who are the
"suppliers" of various parts that are made for the car? ie: pinion boots,
light switches, etc (more that is what is on the DMC12.COM list).
I used to do work at an editing studio on the Universal backlot in the mid
to late eighties. I had occassion to wander into the back lot where the
"future" Hill Valley set was still in place (before the backlot fire) They
had one the cars positioned so the trams could get a good look at it as
well as the entire set.
On one visit I was hangin out underneath the Texaco Gas Station where the
alley was when Marty first arrived to the future. Underneath the station
was a futuristic vending machine "mall" One of the big units was a 7-11
"Compuvend" machine. The prop had small doors that had handmade signs
that say "COMPUVEND" on them that went all around it in a circle. I
noticed that there was one of these signs still attached. It is now
proudly displayed in my "D". I'm glad I aquired it as soon after the
entire section of the set was destoyed in the fire. Gone where the Cafe
80's as well as the Gas Station. Luckily the courthouse and the opposite
side of the set where saved.
I have pictures of the COMPUVEND set if anyone is interested as well as
interior shots of the car that I took at the BTTF 1,2&3 trilogy screening
in Los Angeles.
A funny thing about the screening. I drove my car to the Cinerama Dome on
Sunset and had many hours to kill before the start of the screening. There
was a crew from Universal working on the BTTF car so they could display it
in the front of the theater. Due to OSHA regulations they had to drain the
gas as well as disconnect the battery. The guys working on the car
(believe it or not) thought they had to remove ALL the stuff in the engine
compartment.....Thrusters and all!! They were freakin out to say the
least. Up steps me "hey guys, whats the trouble?" reply "nothing kid,
we're just trying to get the car ready for show" They continued swearing
that they didn't have time to do it. Up steps me again....."uh
guys?"........are you looking for the battery?. They all look at each
other...."Uh... yeah". "well, your looking in the wrong place, it's behind
the passenger seat". They pop the seat forward and lo and behold, a
battery! "Uh, Thanks". They even took my picture sitting in the car,
ahh! instant friendship.
Also, coming to work the BTTF car was parked for several weeks nead one of
the sound stages. I got several really nice shots of my Delorean and one
of the movie cars side by side.
