If you have the front end toe-in adjusted, make sure they reposition the
boots. I recently had the front end realigned since I had fully
disassembled it. They adjusted the toe-in, even though it was within
spec,
but they did not reposition the tie-rod boot and it tore when I made a
turn.
The replacement boot appears to be rather expensive. Another thing to
remember when you are having your car serviced.

Mike is on the right path, but you might want to start simply.
Check to make sure you have fluid in the clutch reservoir. It's
located under the front bonnet. If your fluid level is low, you may
also need to bleed the clutch at the slave cylinder. Actually,
you might want to do this anyway.
The plastic clutch line problem is more noticeable when
the car is hot. The plastic softens a bit with temperature and
balloons when you try to actuate the clutch. This prevents the
clutch from operating fully, causing the grinding while you shift.
The braided stainless steel line is more rigid and tends to
reflect heat.
Other possibilities are the clutch slave and master cylinders.
Suspect the master cylinder first, slaves hardly ever fail.

Joe,
Just a quick comment. I have a Ducellier Alternator and have
not had a problem since I modified it years ago. I am still looking for
my notes but I can tell you what I did. One of the weak links in the
Ducellier is the internal Diode bridge. Mine went out within six months
of owning my D. Since I was used to working on LUCAS type electrical
problems, I decided to find out how to improve the design and
performance and have everything look the same. I took the diode bridge
down to my local autoparts store and asked if they had anything close.
Sure enough I got a bridge from either a Ford or GM (I do have the part
# somewhere) that required a small modification. I cut the edges of the
heat sink on a bandsaw so that it would fit inside the alternator. At
the same time I replaced the internal regulator( I believe with a
JEMCO). I put a diode in the sense line to the regulator to fool the
alternator into putting out more current. It essentially puts out 0.7
Volts higher than it normally would with a proportional amount of
current increase (about 7-8%). Have not had a problem since. Total
cost for the diode bridge and diode at the time were under $10. I do
not remember what the regulator cost.

Hi Kayo,
Thanks for the information. James forwarded you other Key message. I
think
you may have some miss understanding about the DMC Logo Keys. There are
several key blade Blanks that will fit the cylinder pattern of the locks
used in the Delorean. All when "cut" by a competent key mach operator will
work in any DeLorean door/Ign system.
The Key blanks and "Pre-Cut" keys that I make are a work of LOVE not
intended to be a business or living income. It is an interest and a
service
I provide because I like taking part in my DeLorean family. I charge just
enough to pay for the materials and postage and stay a step ahead on
making
the dies I use to create the blanks. For this reason I use Key blanks that
come from the original Key Blank supplier in England, and I use a an
almost
indestructible Epoxy material for the Logo top.
Each set of Keys are hand made one Set at a time and takes about six (6)
hours from start to finish. The Logo tops are exact duplicates of the
original DeLorean Keys, made from a pressing of the Original.
I suspect that you could make a business out of making DeLorean keys, but
you must understand that I am not competing with any one in either price
or
type of key. Any one who would like to replace or add a Newly made almost
indestructible DeLorean Logo Key can get them from me for my going price.
You might be interested to know I have made about 375 sets of keys so far
for owners world wide, I make a few sets each month, Generally taking one
or two days a month when I make the Keys.
I hope this clears up what appears to be a miss understanding.

All stainless steel, will spot and pit some degree. The more nickle
content
it has, the more resistance to pitting and duller "gray" the surface will
look. The more chrome content it has the shinnier "silver" the surface
will
be.
The 304 stainless steel which the DeLorean is made from will pitt and
spot if
you get "adverse" chemicals on it. Depending on the strength and the
type of
the chemical, the quicker this effect will set in. In due time it will
spot
up leaving discoloration and pitting. It is not totally immune to
spotting or
to pitting. It is still easier to take care of the stainle steel surface
than
a painted surface.

I did not intend that you are involved in profiteering. I was trying to

help to either lowering the cost on your purchasing end or offering

The cost of blanks can be cheaper in price if you buy in bulk or direct

the manufactures. At times some suppliers or manufacturers may run out of
blanks too, so another source may be good to know.
I do know of your intentions with all the projects that you are involved

Subject: DML: Single Turbo Performance Upgrade
Hello,
I have been a "closet-reader" of the DeLorean Mailing List for about
a year now. The information I have gathered from the messages has
been useful in more than one occasion. Thanks for all the help. I'm
going to ask one of my own questions today...
I've owned #4955 for a bit more that a year now and have decided
that engine could use some improvement. My particular interest is to
add a turbo to the stock engine. I have looked through most of the
relevant back issues on the mailing list to see what others have done
with turbos. Most inquires concerning turbos are directed towards the
twin turbo kit that is available from Turbo Manifold Company. This
looks to me like a good package with many good reports from those that
have installed it. Due to the relatively high price for this kit, I
have decided to look into single turbo options for the DeLorean. A
few times in the back issues I found single turbos suggested as an
alternative to the twin setup, but never were any details included on
how to pursue such an installation. I recall reading that many
DeLorean owners have installed single Garrett, Rayjay, or BAE turbos.
(I have heard that there was once a single BAE turbo kit made for the
DeLorean. Unfortunately they are now unavailable.)
Can anyone give me any information and/or details on how to install
a single turbo? Here some examples of the kind of things I am looking
for:
- Copies of the diagrams for the now unavailable BAE kit.
- An uninstalled BAE kit sitting in someone's garage. (Yeah right!)
- Information/diagrams for proven custom designs.
- Pictures of installations.
- Is there a Volvo turbo made for the PRV-6?
- Sources for manifold interconnect.
- How to deal with the cat and muffler.
- Intercooler or none.
I would appreciate any leads or information. Please contact me on
or off line as appropriate.
Thanks,
Luke Soasey

Hi John!
I agree, the guy who wrote that article about the DeLorean is an
asshole! His name is Quentin Wilson and he works for a British TV
program called "Top Gear", which is about cars. While the other
presenter talks about interesting cars like Porsche's or Ferrari's,
Quentin talks about the latest family sedan that can do 60miles per
gallon...
He doesn't know anything about sports cars but yet wrote a book about
them! I think the DML should send him a lot of e-mails! I'll
try and get his address of the top gear homepage.
The car that was photographed belongs to Dave Howarth in England and he
also has a web page on the net which is new and pretty good. I doubt
he'd have let the car be photographed if he knew what Quentin was going
to say about it!

hey! i was searchin' through the archives for the 4speed thread that i

that sported a picture of a canadian Delorean with a KPH speedo.
anyway, i know that canadians arent the only ones that use KPH, thats
just where the car was from, but i was wondering if those of us in the
states could order KPH speedometers for our cars. not just Deloreans,
but ANY car.
i understand that its not for the list, so could someone write to me

Here's the route of your radio memory fuse wire. Fuse # 17, pink wire to
the cigar lighter, pink wire from cigar lighter to digital clock, pink
wire
from clock to fuse holder and than on to your radio. In some cars the wire
changes color between the clock and fuse holder. If you still can't find
this wire let me know and I'll dig into my archives for the wire color for

I had the same problem and it would even blow 30Amp fuses. The worse
thing
about blowing fuses was when the engine compartment light was on. When
the
doors are open it blows fuses pretty fast, after 5 minutes or so.

I have heard some hp figures tossed around rather loosely, but I know of
no
one who has done this sort of tweaking and gained 70 PROVEN HP. If anyone
has, I would really like to see an article on what was done.
Most of the turbo's are not producing 200 HP. If you hold the boost to
less than 7 Lbs., the engine appears to not suffer any adverse reactions.
The ACTUAL HP gain in such circunstances will produce somewhat less than
200 HP.
Unless one is going for major HP gains, the engine will suffer more from
how one drives and maintains the car than from the HP gain.

After reading the article thread it is quite clear that the author Quentin
Wilson Knows little or nothing about the DeLorean, My suggestion would be
to contact the publisher, (as many DML members as might wish this) and
send
letters pointing out both the errors in the article and suggesting a
publishers correction. A positive approach is much more likely to get
printed than a negative one.
How about the publishers address as well?

I don't have a problem with opinions that are negative in so far as the

Hi DR,
I tend to agree as a general rule, but I think it is worth mentioning this
as well.
Houston has racks of complete engines, and if maxing out on reliable HP is
a goal, and assuming that the DMC owner were willing to invest in such a
project. There is a lot that can be done to reach the magic 200HP level.
Many years ago I used to be interested in Airboats to the point of
building
one using the corvair engine. Here in California ( Freemont to be exact)
was a place called the speed shop. There was no aspect of internal engine
functions that could not be improved. A first step was blue-printing the
engine, then the modification of parts and systems until every last drop
of
power was achieved. There are always trade offs, the more power for a
given
engine the less reliable it can become.
So for the delorean "Original engine" I suspect that given the basic
design
adding or more accurately getting 70HP is not the problem so much as what
it takes to accomplish the task.
I won't go into all the "souping up vernacular", my opinion is that 200HP
is available it's just a matter of approach and cost.

Reply: Yes you are talking about the right thing. You will need to replace
that bracket ASAP, in the mean time it would be a good Idea to disconnect
the lower speedo cable. When you get the part, be sure to lubricate the
angle drive and the drive cup that is under the wheel hub. The lubrication
goes on just the small square hole only! If you do not get some
lubrication
inside the angle drive it will fail very quickly.

This is more of a "don't Panic" than anything else. The bracket
mentioned broke off on my first "D" at around 15K and was never
replaced. When I sold the car at 67K it had not been replaced, the
lower cable had, and I had never had a problem with the angle drive.
This was long before the "DML" existed.

Further to this thread:
Please don't misunderstand me. Getting the 70 Hp, OR MORE, is not
impossible nor even particularly difficult. But the comment here was to
maintain a reliable engine PRESUMABLY so that the car could be driven in a
somewhat normal fashion. Given that, I stand by my comments; i.e., a mild
cam change, "porting and relieving", headers and the like don't typically
produce a 50% increase in HP. Sure, if you want to go with a very
aggressive cam, change bore and stroke, add a high flow fuel pump with
appropriate injectors, etc, it is possible. However, you won't have a car
you will want to drive on the street and the engine will probably be a
heck
of a lot more tempermental that one with the addition of a turbocharger
$.02 more

Can people please give me details of this article - I admit I haven't been
following the thread too closely. I have a mate who works at the BBC and
might
be able to "find" me the right contact to complain to. Top Gear may be
interested in re-dressing the balance by doing a feature on the D. When
all's
said and done, it is THE show to watch about cars over here...
I vaguely recall a conversation with Dave about someone from a magazine
taking
a D for a test run, and was simply scared of putting his toe down. The
car he
was driving had headers fitted and it flew. It still got a bad write-up
:-(
With the web page now up and looking pretty, and the owners club is
prospering, I've been wondering for a while about contacting the "beeb".
I'll
be sure to mention the sheer volume of support for the car worldwide (not
least through the DML).
Best Wishes all,
Martin
PS The DOC UK site is maintained by me as my way of getting involved
without
actually having a DeLorean.

Dave Howarth did indeed lend the publishers his car for the photographs

My guess is that Willson was paid to put his name to the book, he didn't

James,
As it stands date August 26.1998. The only tires that are "V" rated for
the
fronts and rears in the "correct sizes" are Yokohomas and Pirellis that is
available off the shelf (correct me if I am wrong). All other brands
that I
know of are either front or rear "V" rated, not both. "H" is 130 MPH
rated.
It is common and available in brands.
Besides, our DeLoreans do not operate above 130 MPH, or does it? I would
like
to see or find one that can beside the #502 "The Legend." Then these 130
MPH
DeLoreans will put an end to the fact that the DeLorean is a slow or a low
"top end" performer. This has always been the talk or the topic of this
marque as a sports car (who cares, I still love it).
The point is: "V" rated is 149 MPH, do we really need "V" rated tires?
Or "H"
tires will do for it is availability and for its general road performance?

Steve Wynne at DMC Houston has souped up Bill Swilleys stock engine.
They port matched the heads, changed the cams and get 170 to 180 hp.
The K & N Filter setup that others on the list have spoke about will
give you free HP. My car in stock form goes fast enough to get me
tickets if I'm not carefull. I think that if I had more HP, not only
would the car go faster, but my insurance rates would go UP faster too.

Hi DeLorean Fans!
I'm going to the DeLorean Expo '98 in September and if there is someone
in the San Francisco area who would also like to go, within 20 miles or
so, I'll pick you up and bring you down. No, I don't have a DeLorean

Or, if you have a DeLorean and are travelling down alone, and live
within 100 miles of San Francisco could I drive to your home and travel

Mail me back at: dmcjohn@xxxxxxxxxxx or reply to the mailing list if you
