IMHO
If you sold oil and had all your money into it and where reaping HUGE 
profits,  I doubt you would encourage electric cars which would lower your oil 
profits.  It doesn't make sense to sell the batteries to make money when it would be 
hurting your oil profits.

What I think you (ie. the oilies)  would do is sell every last drop of oil 
there was to be had then release the battery technology and keep on making 
profits, perhaps then gouging the price if the batteries ...Oh because there is no 
more oil left...  Otherwise you'd be competing with yourself.

This doesn't make sense. Why would "the oil companies" buy up
technology and then squirrel it away? Because it's a threat to their
profits?

Gee, if I were a big oil guy and owned the patents for all sorts of
revolutionary power devices, I'd license them and get even richer.
