I use a quarter inch drive and a six point socket to have a go at the 
nuts. A 1/4" isn't really big enough to break anything and most will 
come off like that. Anything tougher and you'd better hope they snap off 
with the manifold and not with the head. Then use a quality stud 
extractor to hoik them out. I've done about 8 manifold gasket jobs now 
and have only ever snapped one stud off at the head that wasn't already 
weakened.
