It sounds to me like the problem is upstream. If the speedo drive is 
properly installed and lubricated, you should be able to turn the cable 
-by-hand- it really takes very little.

It's just a hole to put oil in, Bill, not an oil supply. All you do is 
undo the cable and turn it round...

No it's just the only convenient way to achieve a good range of gear 
ratios -and- get the 90 degree drive that is needed. So yes, used on a 
lot of cars and all you do is vary the ratio with the gears depending on 
the size of the wheel/ type of speedo. If you actually count the 
revolutions, the DeLorean angle drive achieves 9 turns of the speedo 
cable for 8 turns of the wheel.

There is no other way of achieving this sort of gearing without either 
strait gears or a gearbox. And if you knew anything about worm drives, 
you'd realise instantly that the speedo drive could not possibly be a 
worm drive. The simplest way to explain the difference is that a worm 
drive locks when the worm is stopped. You cannot force the window down 
in the DeLorean without busting the mechanism - you'll never get the 
motor to turn - and I mean the actual motor drive, not the window track. 
THAT's a worm drive. Why is this inapropriate for the speedo drive? 
Because in terms of drive/driven gears, you only get one tooth of 
movement of the driven side for every revolution of the drive side (I 
know you can get worms with more than one spiral, so feasibly this could 
be up to about 4). A worm is the easiest way to achive a large reduction 
in a single stage. Shame it's so inefficient!
