To continue my saga, when the compressor went on my other truck I had it
replaced with a new one from Nissan. They added the R-134A conversion kit,
which I think consisted only of adapters for the schrader valves.
I have been running R-134A in that truck for about two years with no
problems, and on almost all of the original non-barrier hoses. One was
replaced with a new hose but is still non-barrier. A guy at the dealership
converted his 280Z to R-134A with no modifications whatsoever and hasn't had
problems either.
I was also told it could be about seven degrees warmer. If memory serves,
human skin can not detect anything three degrees or less of a difference.
That truck will have your teeth chattering sitting in idle traffic on the
interstate, with no problems.

Bill -- I converted (err, paid a shop to convert) my first Fiero to
134-A and never had a problem with it. It was nice and cold. Others
who converted theirs always complained about it not cooling as well as
R-12. I think the difference is like you said, "a system designed for
it." Most of my system was replaced, including the compressor, with
parts designed for 134-A.
I wouldn't mind doing the same on my DeLorean, but I don't want some
random shop doing the work and don't know how to do it myself. Maybe,
if I get into your neck of the woods some day, we can have a chat
about that... ;)
