Walt,
Your question about deer is part of the larger question of reservoirs
for disease. We know that prions can be passed by eating dead
neurological tissue, BUT there must also be a nature reservoir (source)
for them. What ever that source is, deer some how are exposed to it?
As an example, the source for Cholera, is fish off the coast of Peru.
Water evaporating in this area carries the germs into the clouds and
they rain down on the Peruvian people.
We also know that the reservoir of influenza virus is the duck
population of China, the influenza stains spread around the world each
years as these duck migrate.
Nature reservoirs of disease are a very difficult and under funded
research area. For example, where does ebola virus come from ? We
don't know, it just pops up once in a while?
