DOT rating has nothing at all to do with what the hydraulic fluid is
made from. Is merely a measure of how much heat the fluid can absorb
before breaking down. DOT 4 is simply more heat resistant than DOT 3,
that's all. Hardly a concern in a clutch system I may add.
Rich Acuti is correct Re: AMC clutch master Xref (4 cylinder, not 6 --
they are different aps). I've got one sitting in my driveway right
now. Slave cylinder is of course different.
IMHO biggest single threat to the piston seals is heat. AMC's slave
cylinder sits in a nook between the exhaust manifold and piping. Am
lucky to get much more than 5 years from it. Master cylinder however
is only on its second rebuild.
