I've swapped ECUs and watched the problem follow the ECU to another car. The symptoms are as you describe. Engine idles smooth when cold, but then when it warms up, the idle goes nuts even to the point of occasionally stalling the engine. The old ECU was repaired by replacing the old ICs in it. One in particular is an op-amp which has internal capacitors that break down with age. It is simply a matter of time before all ignition ECUs have this problem. The upside is that new chips only cost a few dollars and require moderate soldering skills to replace. I think John Hervey does this fix on a swap basis.
