Rattle on startup has as much to do with the filter as it does the oil. A good filter with an anti-siphon valve that works will keep oil up in the engine much longer. So now when you start to turn over engine over the pump doesn't have to fill the filter first, and the oil gets to the lifters much quicker. I run mobile 1 0-40 in my Porsche. When cold the crank goes around 3 times, on average, before the engine starts and in those 3 revolutions my oil pressure gets up to 3bar(43.5psi). With convention 20-50 it would take a couple a second or two after the engine started for the pressure to get up that high. Man that's cool. I'm not going to do it, but cool nonetheless. I say it was time to change the oil because it was dirty, and it was the wrong type for the cold weather. When I'd start, I could hear things rattle dry for about 1.5 seconds while pressure built up, also evidenced by my gauge. I started up this morning in 30 degree weax and could not obeserve a measurable time period where I could hear the engine rattle, plus the gauge pressure rose during cranking, not just when the engine became self-sustaining. Walt: I was wondering why this thing had such a large sump. Now I know. Thanks for that knowledge. Also, people were wondering if I wrecked or already had blown rings when I finished my head gasket replacement job. I was pleased to notice that the oil level never went down due to burning past worn rings. There's no blue smoke from the exhaust either. --- In DMCForum@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "Andrei Cular" <acular@xxxx> wrote: > OK let me end this oil change debate.
