[DMCForum] DeLo Fuel Tank Issues:

Re: various current fuel tank threads:

DeLo fuel tank pickup is questionable design that doesn't age well:

"Screaming" fuel pump: mine actually did scream when a piece of
deteriorated pump boot crumbled into tank, was sucked against a pickup
screen, and broke through (screens become very brittle with age).
Extremely loud. Continued working but made terrible grinding noises
thereafter. Was brand X -- without check valve! -- so I replaced with
proper Bosch.

Air & vapor in pickup: stock DeLo baffle pivots vertically. Can rise
to top of fuel level, allowing air in. That's why I like John Hervey's
simplified baffle: sucks straight from bottom of tank.

Collapsing pickup hose: tank is harsh environment for rubber. Any
pickup hoses remaining from 1981 must be mush by now. In theory
internal spring should help. If original baffle is retained, best
solution is a new hose (which costs same as John Hervey's baffle BTW).
Note also that John's design doesn't really have a hose: pump and
screen barbs butt against each other -- little 1" synthetic piece just
holds them together.

Deteriorated pump boot and bracket: Problem isn't as much design as
age. Makes no sense to replace rubber coolant and vacuum hoses yet
leave original boot in place. A new one from any vendor will provide
years of trouble free service. Replace bracket at same time.

Hot fuel: never had a problem with this, but I also suck straight from
bottom of tank. If it truly is a problem, would be hot water in
radiator pipes that hold tank up, not outside air. 195 degrees minimum
-- way hotter than even Arizona summer.
