I think a lot of damage in this area is actually caused by water, especially on cars without lowered front ends. Collects at that lip. Since is plastic (never rusts through) will sit there indefinitely. Ruins carpet, wood, seat rails -- everything except underbody itself. A/C evaporator is prime culprit if drain tube clogged or crimped. Unbelievably large quantity of water will condense inside housing and eventually run out floor vent.
