Once you get it looking even then following up with the proper variety of Scotch-brite pad mellows it out. Doing it by hand is a lot harder than it looks. Long strokes are very destructive because the further you push the paper, the deeper it progressively cuts. You can end up with very deep gouges that way. Short quick strokes work the best for me. (Yes, I know that many of you think I'm a compulsive masturbater.) I try to gently and firmly place the paper against the stainless and then scrape and lift off in short strokes. Hitting the paper against the stainless only seems to leave crooked lines and "J" patterns. Walt Yahoo!
