[DMCForum] Re: More on the Scientific Method

I know truth is knocking. I'm looking through the little peephole on
the door.

I know the oil pressure is related to all this somehow. I was just on
the phone with Warren at DMCH to discuss it.

I did not have the opportunity to observe oil pressure. The car
didn't run long enough, but it didn't squeal until after another
round of cranking. It did not squeal while it was running.

I have determined that the oil pump may need priming to suck from the
sump. The oil was so thinned out when I got the car, it was like
water. I drained it all, and the oil suction tube and pump probably
drained because there was no viscosity (resistance to flow) to hold
it in there.

I should slap myself because I mis-read the manual. I thought it said
to prime the oil pump AT the pump through a little hole. It
says "Remove the oil filter and inject some engine oil through hole
(A) with an oil can to prime the oil pumps" (Yes, there are two).

I may have a small amount of fuel in the sump from other tests. I
will prime the pumps as soon as I get home.

Warrensays (my favorite phrase) that no oil pressure and squeaking
mean a hell of a lot of friction that -may- result in hard cranking
(and starting). He feels I should look into this sooner rather than
later because I may damage something without lube.

I am listening for truth and I believe that this is all related. I
think I'll have more answers when I get home.

is a problem with the spark, compression, or fuel". Those last are
hypotheses. Find ways to test them, but don't get discouraged if you
don't find anything wrong there.

get it to start. And it DID start, so let's focus on analyzing why.

compression isn't the main problem (100psi is fine), the other result
of adding MMO is lubrication. You may have a huge amount of friction
if your oil isn't flowing. Did you check the oil pressure yet?
Anything coming out one of the sender holes? MMO doesn't burn like
fuel, even in a diesel, so we can discount that. Friction can
account for squeaking (metal-to-metal), hard cranking, and lack of
compression (no oil to seal the rings).

pressure, I would really focus on that. You should get at least
enough pressure on cranking to get the oil light to go out, and stay
out, for about 5 seconds at minimum. Have you checked the viscosiy
of the oil lately? Has it thinned with fuel?

looking for the truth,' and so it goes away. Puzzling." - Robert
Pirsig. The lack of oil pressure is pointing to the fact that
SOMETHING is wrong; listen to it and find out what it's telling you.
The car might start without oil pressure, but the same cause of the
lack of oil pressure could be the cause of the non-start condition.
This little "unrelated issue" could be the cause.
