I just got my leaky evaporator out of my car yesterday. I discovered that the leak was caused by a previous owner/mechanic who had slipped with a wrench and gouged the discharge pipe. They also bent up the input pipe. It apparently wasn't a bad enough leak before, but all the forces I put on the pipe to get it loose made it many times worse. I took it to a local shop who is now in the process of repairing it. They are going to cut off the damaged ends and attach new ones. As you may have already heard, the vendors are currently out of reproduction evaporators, and the company that was making them is having management problems. I asked the local place if they could make new evaporators from scratch, but they are unable to. They can't get the #12 discharge pipes in long enough pieces or bend them on a mandrel. And this is the only place that advertises in Hemmings. If anyone could make one, I think they should. If anyone knows of a source to buy #12 aluminum pipe and the associated steel fittings, let me know. I'm going to suggest that they try using lengths of flexible hose instead. Replacing the core (they call it a brick) is not a problem for them. I saw several that looked just like it sitting in their shop. Walt ------------------------ Yahoo!
