I agree with you..  Every so often, I go to the google
news archive and look up all of my posts from 10+
years ago.  Recently got back in to NNTP for binaries 
(Kevin got me on the kick!).

Anyway, if you download the PAR files with the regular
binaries (usually RAR files), you can use a program
called QuickPar to check that you have all of the data
and if anything is missing it will try and fix it. 
Works a lot like a RAID system, but on the file level.
 

BTW, the binaries are still using the UUENCODE format.
 However, the tools to encode/decode have gotten
better.  I remember the old days of having to download
all of the parts, then use "vi" to edit them together
and then UUDECODE the file.   Ah, the good old days! 
NOT!  :)
