I have seen behavior like this from bad battery cables.  On the outside 
the cables look fine, but the connection is intermittent.

You can test this when it does not work.  With some one holding the 
key(when it is not starting)  in the start position, measure the 
voltages from the bat term to the starter and the ground.  Cut a little 
hole in the bat cable beyond the connector.
