That, and according to an old artice I read in the paper a few years
ago, lots of R-12 was ordered and stockpiled by auto manufacturers,
repair shops and the like. And in the same way that oil prices are so
high right now, people speculated that it was going to be worth bank,
and drove the price right up to like $60 a pound. So people stopped
buying it. They either retrofitted their systems to R-134a, or simply
sold their cars to buy newer ones with working A/C. At least around
here anyways.
Now since the demand for R-12 is so low, the price is naturally
falling. R-134a however is going way up. The industry claims are that
manufacturing has been throttled back, and that more consumers in
Asia, and Europe are increasing consumption of R-134a, because of
increased demand of cars with A/C.
