What I remember from the 3 years I lived in Germany is that the spacing between stations is different. I don't remember exactly what the difference was, but it was something sort of like this: European stations might be something like .6 apart, for example 88.0, 88.6, 89.2, 89.8, etc.; US stations are something like .7 apart, so they might start also at 88.0, then go to 88.7, 89.4, 90.1, etc. At least when I lived there (87-90), most car radios would jump by the spacing amount, so you couldn't tune your radio to 88.2 in either of the examples given above. It is possible for a European station and a US station to be on the same frequency - there are several frequencies that are common in the example, but it would be mostly pure luck to get one, and you would be more likely to be able to get close, but not quite on the right frequency. Of course, some radios are built to be able to work in either situation, so they'll work anywhere.
