The fact that your shims all fell out would suggest the bolt snapped at 
the point between the arm and the bush - which is where they bend. My 
experience is that they sieze in the arms, not in the bush, and with the 
bush, you've got something to pull them out with - the head. Once that's 
out, you can use a punch (smaller than 12mm in diameter) slipped through 
the bush to tap the siezed up end out. of the trailing arm. a long M10 
bolt would be perfect.
